Ice cream, the old-fashioned way |
1380 Kuhio Highway, # 103a Kauai, HI 96746 United States +1 808 822 4411 |
There is nothing like an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, and you might be surprised at how authentic this one is. It follows age-old soda shop protocol: sit at the bar and watch while a counter person makes your sundae or soda. The cheerful establishment also serves banana splits, pies, cookies and other sweets. Malts come highly recommended. Fifties sock-hop music plays in the background and memorabilia decorates the walls. The "Fabulous 50s" might be gone forever, but The Bop, Elvis Presley and chocolate malts are still very much alive. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gotta-love-it burger joint |
4-1421 Kuhio Highway Kauai, HI 96746 United States +1 808 823 0069 http://www.bubbaburger.com/ |
While waiting for your meal at this burger joint, you can amuse yourself by reading about the management's latest wrangle with snobby San Francisco lawyers, tossing your spare coins at the cook's feet (try to win a T-shirt!), or plugging your ears in an effort to get away from the pounding honky-tonk. Once the food comes, you'll be happily occupied for a while. Char-grilled burgers, baskets of "frings" (fries and rings—perfect for the indecisive) and even corn dogs are on the menu. The fare is simple, cheap and tasty. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diners here enjoy a spectacular view of the bay and Bali Hai as well as a tempting array of breakfast, lunch and dinner items. Asian nuances flavor the continental favorites featured here. Try the Baked Pacific Oysters with spinach and curried butter appetizer. Seafood is a must in a location like this—ask about the daily specials. Much of what you will find here is locally grown or caught. A seafood buffet is available every Friday night, and a champagne brunch is hosted every Sunday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nautical nuances |
5-5016 Kuhio Highway Kauai, HI 96714 United States +1 808 826 6113 |
Large portions and a cozy, tropical setting are the key features of this Hanalei eatery. Although the interior of the restaurant sports captain's chairs and other nautical accessories, it manages to avoid the hokey atmosphere characteristic of the average ocean-themed restaurant. The clientele here is mixed. Dress is casual to elegant, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Fish is the specialty, prepared just about any way you like. Prices are relatively high, but portions are sizable and most meals can be split. Review © 2007, Wcities |

It is easy to get decent Japanese food on the islands, but if you want Kauai's best, this is the place to go. Locals and tourists in the know agree that the tempura, Teppan yaki and pupus or appetizers here are the very best. As for the sashimi and sushi, they melt in your mouth. The authentic Asian decor is appealing and serene, with a choice of table or tatami seating. This family-owned business has been an island favorite for two generations. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a down-home breakfast |

A highlight of this cafe is its 'build your own' omelet bar. There are nearly 20 fillings to choose from, so if you have found omelet choices just short of the mark in the past, this is the answer to your problems. If you would rather go local-style, try your eggs with rice and Portuguese sausage. Pancakes, French toast and other griddle favorites are also available. Although breakfast is the specialty, a selection of burgers and sandwiches is also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The menu here features a wide variety of Italian classics but is distinctive in its creative touches. There are plenty of seafood options; a tribute to the Hawaiian coast locale. Its location inside the Princeville Resort virtually ensures an elegant dining experience. The interior is enhanced by hand-painted murals and artfully hanging ivy. Persian rugs accent the tile flooring, and lighting is low but warm. Glance out the window and you will see the several cascading waterfalls that gave the restaurant its name. The breezy, island-themed dining room of this restaurant offers the kind of relaxed elegance for which Hawai'i is known. Burritos in paradise |

Mexico may be a long way from Kaua'i, but the food served here is about as authentic as Mexican food gets. The restaurant has been an island fixture for more than 30 years. Resist the temptation to fill up on tortilla chips and house-made salsa; every dinner entree comes with vegetables, rice, beans and soup. Food is prepared in the most health-conscious manner possible (no lard), without sacrificing any of the flavor. The cheerful, cafe-style decor includes paper place mats, cozy booths and Mexican flourishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A daily variety |
4-1387 Kuhio Highway Kauai, HI 96746 United States +1 808 822 5825 |
"Real food" is served here in addition to mochas and other upscale cafe favorites. This casual spot is a pleasant cross between an espresso bar and restaurant. It caters to a mixed clientele, and the morning menu includes everything from espresso and fresh-baked pastry (a house specialty) to omelets. Local influences are visible in some of the options, while more healthy "California cuisine" is also available. Lunch entrees can be as simple as a burger and fries or as complicated as a Pan-Asian seafood creation. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Savory artful seafood |
5-5075 Kuhio Highway Kauai, HI 96714 United States +1 808 826 1191 http://www.postcardscafe.com/ |
Hailed by some as the finest healthy gourmet in Hawaii, this cozy little cottage cafe is a favorite among visitors and locals alike. It offers fusion cuisine with an emphasis on seafood and vegetarian options. Customer service is another specialty of the quaint cafe, and staff members will see to it that guests feel at home in the vintage-style dining room. Though there is no lunch, breakfast is served until the late morning hours every day. The casually elegant spot takes on a more formal atmosphere during dinner hours. Blackened ahi is one of the more popular entrees; taro fritters are a distinctly local pupu and well worth sampling. Review © 2007, Wcities |

5-3900 Kuhio Highway (Princeville Golf Course) Kauai, HI 96722 United States +1 808 826 5050 |
Situated on the stunning Princeville Golf Course on the verdant North Shore of Kaua'i, this place offers golfers and guests of the Princeville Resort a casual place to dine in the morning or afternoon. Of course, Princeville equals pricey, so don't expect to find any cheap eats here, but this place probably does offer the least expensive meals on the resort. Sandwiches, salads, pupus and cocktails are served. Sushi is offered on Monday nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a restaurant where each table has a delightful view of the ocean and an equally promising menu. The owners take pride in having developed their own special style of barbeque, and offer a terrific blend of the best. Try their specialties—Perfect Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Beef Brisket, and the Rib and Chicken Platter. Also popular are the side-dishes and desserts. There is a BBQ buffet on Sundays from 3p-8p.
