Hearty, local-style meals |
2982 Kress Street Kauai, HI 96766 United States +1 808 245 2921 |
Bored with breakfast? Try something different: teriyaki fish, miso soup, egg and rice. It sounds bizarre if you have never tried it, but it can be surprisingly satisfying in the morning. At noon, standard plate lunches are a favorite, but a selection of home-cooked American favorites is also available. Hearty dinner entrees include meat loaf, roast beef and stuffed mahi mahi. This simple and informal restaurant has been around for more than 60 years. During that time, it has managed to accumulate a devoted clientèle. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A rustic dining experience |
2-2431 Kaumualii Highway Kauai, HI 96741 United States +1 808 332 9755 |
The sugar industry was once the dominating force of the Hawaiian Islands. People from a number of foreign countries came to work on the plantations, and were housed in wooden structures known as "camp houses." This is one of a few still standing. Its history is best explained through the photographs that adorn the walls. The menu consists of solid, down-home favorites served in sizable portions. Breakfasts are about as hearty as they come. Try the corned beef hash, biscuits and gravy, home fries and eggs. Lunch and dinner entrees are based around meat dishes: barbecued chicken, ribs and burgers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Just about anyone can find something to enjoy, whether it's the comfortable plantation decor, the fresh seafood or the impressive wine list. Signature items include Seafood Rhapsody and Chicken Kauai. Gaylord's also does the cooking for the Kilohana Luau that takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Snacks, shakes, munchies |
2-2436 Kaumualii Highway # A2 Kauai, HI 96741 United States http://www.kalaheo.com/ |
This is a popular stop-off on the way to touristy Waimea Canyon and other top destinations. The friendly, small-town cafe opens at dawn and serves hearty, tasty breakfasts and lunches. Some menu items include bagels, breakfast burritos, omelets, sandwiches, salads, espresso drinks and ice cream shakes. This is a laid-back place to grab a bite. It is also a retailer, a hangout spot and, somewhat surprisingly, a meeting place for local techies. The Internet Users Group of Kalaheo meets here monthly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A highlight of this cafe is its 'build your own' omelet bar. There are nearly 20 fillings to choose from, so if you have found omelet choices just short of the mark in the past, this is the answer to your problems. If you would rather go local-style, try your eggs with rice and Portuguese sausage. Pancakes, French toast and other griddle favorites are also available. Although breakfast is the specialty, a selection of burgers and sandwiches is also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A daily variety |
4-1387 Kuhio Highway Kauai, HI 96746 United States +1 808 822 5825 |
"Real food" is served here in addition to mochas and other upscale cafe favorites. This casual spot is a pleasant cross between an espresso bar and restaurant. It caters to a mixed clientele, and the morning menu includes everything from espresso and fresh-baked pastry (a house specialty) to omelets. Local influences are visible in some of the options, while more healthy "California cuisine" is also available. Lunch entrees can be as simple as a burger and fries or as complicated as a Pan-Asian seafood creation. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a restaurant where each table has a delightful view of the ocean and an equally promising menu. The owners take pride in having developed their own special style of barbeque, and offer a terrific blend of the best. Try their specialties—Perfect Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Beef Brisket, and the Rib and Chicken Platter. Also popular are the side-dishes and desserts. There is a BBQ buffet on Sundays from 3p-8p. Delicious deli, cozy cafe |
5-5161 Kuhio Highway, #5 Kauai, HI 96714 United States +1 808 826 2524 |
The breakfast menu here includes everything from cereals (for the health-conscious) to omelets. If you do not have time to linger, buy a pastry or an afternoon picnic lunch to go. Dinner specials vary nightly. The building that now houses this cafe was once the Hanalei School. It has since been completely restored, but retains a charming Old World ambiance. The dining room is casual with a mixed clientèle. Live music is showcased here most nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |
