Breathtaking views, creative cuisine |
5380 Honoiki Road (in the Hanalei Bay Resort) Kauai, HI 96722 United States +1 808 826 6522 |
The gorgeous view of the gardens of Hanalei Bay Resort, stretching all the way out to the Pacific Ocean, is only one of many reasons to frequent this restaurant. The cuisine is an inventive, pleasing fusion of traditional Hawaiian and nouveau Pacific Rim. Signature dishes include the Bali Hai Crabcakes and the Steak "Oluwalu." Fish are caught daily and prepared in a choice of ways, including "Tropical Breeze" (sauteed in island fruit salsa) and "Bali Hai Sunset" (served atop fresh vegetables and the signature crab cakes). Hearty, local-style meals |
2982 Kress Street Kauai, HI 96766 United States +1 808 245 2921 |
Bored with breakfast? Try something different: teriyaki fish, miso soup, egg and rice. It sounds bizarre if you have never tried it, but it can be surprisingly satisfying in the morning. At noon, standard plate lunches are a favorite, but a selection of home-cooked American favorites is also available. Hearty dinner entrees include meat loaf, roast beef and stuffed mahi mahi. This simple and informal restaurant has been around for more than 60 years. During that time, it has managed to accumulate a devoted clientèle. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Favorite for fine dining |
5022 Lawai Road Kauai, HI 96756 United States +1 808 742 1424 http://www.the-beach-house.com/ |
Not to be confused with Zelo's Beach House, this is a perennial favorite for fine dining. It has had a rather turbulent history that includes more than one full-scale natural disaster. Nevertheless, in spite of hurricanes, changes of ownership, and the unstable dining climate in Hawai'i, this restaurant perseveres. Its Pacific Rim-influenced menu features a nice blend of seafood, veggie and meat dishes. Diners and even the jaded local contingency just cannot get enough of the vividly colorful sunsets. Upscale poolside grill |

Sandwiches, salads and pupus (Hawaiian term for appetizers) with a gourmet twist are served here. A signature item is the Maryland Blue Crabmeat Quesadilla. Of course, most of the people lucky enough to lounge poolside at Princeville aren't thinking about food. All they need is a fruity cocktail, complete with a pineapple slice and an umbrella, to complete the tropical island fantasy. This establishment has fruity drinks a-plenty. Go for a Lava Flow or a Mai Tai, the standard Hawaiian foo-foo drinks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ice cream, the old-fashioned way |
1380 Kuhio Highway, # 103a Kauai, HI 96746 United States +1 808 822 4411 |
There is nothing like an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, and you might be surprised at how authentic this one is. It follows age-old soda shop protocol: sit at the bar and watch while a counter person makes your sundae or soda. The cheerful establishment also serves banana splits, pies, cookies and other sweets. Malts come highly recommended. Fifties sock-hop music plays in the background and memorabilia decorates the walls. The "Fabulous 50s" might be gone forever, but The Bop, Elvis Presley and chocolate malts are still very much alive. Review © 2007, Wcities |

According to pizza lovers, this comfortable, family-style restaurant offers some of the best eats on Kaua'i. Established more than 20 years ago, the family-owned Kalaheo eatery has a warm, friendly atmosphere and consistently good food that keeps its loyal clientèle coming back for more. All pies are hearth-baked and you can choose between white or whole-wheat crust. Italian sausage is made on the premises. While waiting for your meal at this burger joint, you can amuse yourself by reading about the management's latest wrangle with snobby San Francisco lawyers, tossing your spare coins at the cook's feet (try to win a T-shirt!), or plugging your ears in an effort to get away from the pounding honky-tonk. Once the food comes, you'll be happily occupied for a while. Char-grilled burgers, baskets of "frings" (fries and rings—perfect for the indecisive) and even corn dogs are on the menu. The fare is simple, cheap and tasty. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A rustic dining experience |
2-2431 Kaumualii Highway Kauai, HI 96741 United States +1 808 332 9755 |
The sugar industry was once the dominating force of the Hawaiian Islands. People from a number of foreign countries came to work on the plantations, and were housed in wooden structures known as "camp houses." This is one of a few still standing. Its history is best explained through the photographs that adorn the walls. The menu consists of solid, down-home favorites served in sizable portions. Breakfasts are about as hearty as they come. Try the corned beef hash, biscuits and gravy, home fries and eggs. Lunch and dinner entrees are based around meat dishes: barbecued chicken, ribs and burgers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tacos and tempe in Kilauea |
2430 Oka Street Kauai, HI 96754 United States +1 808 828 8226 |
The name may seem to indicate a soup and sandwich joint, but the food here is authentically Mexican. Voted "Best Mexican Restaurant on Kauai" by several visitors' magazines, the cafe offers fresh and flavorful California-Mex style cuisine, along with salads, pastries, fresh-baked breads and more. If you are trying to avoid grease, you will be pleased at the absence of lard in this establishment's cooking. Daily fish options tend to be light, healthy and delicious. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Good food, good times |
4303 Rice Shopping Centre # B9 Kauai, HI 96766 United States +1 808 246 0311 |
This is the biggest sports bar on the island. Located a couple miles from Lihue Airport, it is one of the few places on Kaua'i that stays open into the early morning hours. In addition to seven televisions, the bar has live entertainment nightly and dancing from Tuesday to Sunday. The menu offers a decent selection of American favorites including burgers, sandwiches and pupus (appetizers). Order your libation of choice from the full bar. Low prices and casual, boisterous, cheery ambiance make this place even more appealing. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fantastic Pacific Rim cuisine |
2360 Kiahuna Plantation Drive Kauai, HI 96756 United States +1 808 742 5000 http://roys.know-where.com/roy... |
There are many celebrated chefs in Hawai'i, but Roy Yamaguchi is gradually surpassing all of the competition to become the dining scene's brightest star. His Kaua'i restaurant, like all the other Roy's restaurants in the islands, consistently earns top marks with guests and local diners. Distinctive and delicious Pacific Rim creations are served in a bustling location on the South Shore. The menu changes almost daily, but you can count on sampling the very best island seafood, produce, meats and sweets. The extensive wine list includes a dozen vintages from Roy's own label. Situated in the stunning Sheraton Kauai, this restaurant makes the most of its locale in more than one way. The menu features a panoply of exotic seafood items, most of them caught in waters just offshore and paired up with island veggies. The location of the restaurant—oceanfront on the gorgeous southern shore—cannot be beat for drama or romance. This restaurant is a favorite of tourists and locals. Try the seafood buffet held on Friday nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An alternative to Taco Bell |
2827 A Poipu Road Kauai, HI 96756 United States +1 808 742 7222 |
Regardless of the take-out window and the informal picnic table dining area, you will find fresh food and an authentically Mexican atmosphere at this informal eatery. If you are in the mood for something hearty and you do not want to break the bank, this is a great option. All entrees can be made according to your specifications. The menu offers a full range of Mexican favorites: burritos, enchiladas, tacos, tostadas and more. Most items come as a complete meal with beans and rice on the side. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You will not find a formal dining area here, but the variety of fresh, delicious lunch options makes it a great pit stop. Made-to-order deli sandwiches and homemade soups are available daily. Order a sandwich at the lunch counter between 9am and 2:30pm. All sandwiches are served on fresh-baked bread from the Kilauea Bakery (located next door). Daily lunch specials are always tasty. Delicious deli, cozy cafe |
5-5161 Kuhio Highway, #5 Kauai, HI 96714 United States +1 808 826 2524 |
The breakfast menu here includes everything from cereals (for the health-conscious) to omelets. If you do not have time to linger, buy a pastry or an afternoon picnic lunch to go. Dinner specials vary nightly. The building that now houses this cafe was once the Hanalei School. It has since been completely restored, but retains a charming Old World ambiance. The dining room is casual with a mixed clientèle. Live music is showcased here most nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Favorite dining and drinking spot |
1571 Poipu Road (Hyatt Regency) Kauai, HI 96756 United States +1 808 742 1234 http://kauai.hyatt.com/ |
The Hyatt's most popular restaurant is also a great place to have a drink and soak up the atmosphere. The restaurant is surrounded by a free-form pool, which makes for a pleasant, serene atmosphere. It serves Hawaiian-inspired cuisine which focuses heavily on steak and seafood. The menu changes regularly, but you can always count on a few fresh and delicious seafood catches. The extensive wine list offers vintages from all over the world. The lounge opens a half-hour earlier than the restaurant and closes whenever patrons choose to go home. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Simple, low-cost dining |
3173 Akahi Street Kauai, HI 96766 United States +1 808 245 2333 |
This casual spot is more of a pit stop than anything. It has been serving up breakfast and lunch basics for years, with no sign of changing menus or sprucing up its interior. The dining room is not fancy, but it does the job. Stop by for a filling breakfast of eggs and sausage, or sample the beef stew available most nights. Of course, a local restaurant cannot get by without offering the plate-lunch, so you will find plenty of teriyaki options during lunch hours. Most menu items are hearty but not for the health conscious. The restaurant caters to local clientele. It does breakfast best, so try to make it in before 11a. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A taste of Thailand |
Ele'ele Shopping Center Kauai, HI 96705 United States +1 808 335 3111 |
Located in Ele'ele, this is a great place to dine on the way home from a Waimea Canyon day trip. Authentic Thai chef Chey Toi Srinuan is constantly whipping up flavorful creations in the kitchen. Lunch specials offer a significant savings if you are in the neighborhood between 10:30a-2:30p. A wide range of curries and noodle dishes comprise a majority of the dinner menu, while daily seafood specials are always worth trying. The small dining room features glittering Thai-style decor. Located smack-dab in the center of Old Koloa Town, this cheery restaurant serves American comfort food. Steaks, burgers and ribs are served, as well as pasta and vegetarian specialties for non-meat eaters. Desserts are fresh baked, and the fish is freshly caught. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Families are more than welcome in the dining area; there is even a children's menu. The full bar offers sports and suds to thirsty locals and guests. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Perched on the Western shore of Kaua'i is 'the Westernmost brewpub' in the country. It serves a variety of handcrafted beers, among them Pakala Porter and the signature brew, Wai'ale'ale Ale. The menu features an impressive array of Hawaiian bar food, which is like American bar food with an Asian twist. Pupus (appetizers) include Ale-Steamed Shrimp, nachos and the ubiquitous Ahi Poke (raw Ahi in shoyu). Sandwiches, salads, pastas and filling meat entrees are also served. Wednesdays through Saturdays the pub is alive with live music. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Island brews, views |
3132 Ninini Point (one mile past the Marriott) Kauai, HI 96766 United States +1 808 245 2000 |
Visitors to this relaxed restaurant can enjoy microbrews, hearty seafood plates and some of the best sunsets in the world. As if that were not enough, the proprietors also offer live entertainment almost every night. While the fare is billed as Pacific Rim, it is not the somewhat artistic, meagerly portioned cuisine you find in some Hawaiian restaurants. The dishes here are hearty and simple, while the portions are simply enormous. Accompanying them are handcrafted beers such as the Guava Wheat and Da Kine—meaning the best. Review © 2007, Wcities |
