Barbecue Inn

Hearty, local-style meals
2982 Kress Street
Kauai, HI 96766
United States
+1 808 245 2921
Bored with breakfast? Try something different: teriyaki fish, miso soup, egg and rice. It sounds bizarre if you have never tried it, but it can be surprisingly satisfying in the morning. At noon, standard plate lunches are a favorite, but a selection of home-cooked American favorites is also available. Hearty dinner entrees include meat loaf, roast beef and stuffed mahi mahi. This simple and informal restaurant has been around for more than 60 years. During that time, it has managed to accumulate a devoted clientèle.

Deli & Bread Connection

Fresh, fabulous sandwiches
3-2600 Kaumualii Highway # 1005
(Kukui Grove Mall)
Kauai, HI 96766
United States
+1 808 245 7115
As you may have surmised from the cafe's name, the bread here is fresh-baked on the premises. An impressive spread of deli meats and cheeses gives you plenty of sandwich fixings to choose from. Aside from the sandwiches, fresh-made soups are also a specialty. Meal-sized salads (Cobb, baby greens, etc.) and a selection of baked goods are also available. Pastries are best in the morning; pies and cakes can be bought whole or by the slice. Dine in the sparkling clean, deli-style dining room. If you are in the market for top quality appliances, the cafe doubles as a kitchenware store.

Experience a little piece of "Old Hawai'i." This Lihue restaurant is located inside the Kauai Marriott Resort and offers the best of Pacific Rim cuisine, along with outstanding ambiance and beautiful views. The restaurant is comprised of two floors and has an enchantingly tropical ambiance, complete with a small indoor waterfall. A canopy of lush foliage adds to the effect, and even the indoor dining area gives the impression of being open air. Take your time having a drink in the casual bar area or looking over the menu. The house specialty is fresh local fish, prepared any way you like.

Hamura's Saimin Stand

Saimin For all
2956 Kress Street
Kauai, HI 96766
United States
+1 808 245 3271
Hamura's is famous for serving lip-smacking saimin for a long time now. The U-shaped counters attract tourists to the specialty and no holiday in Kauai is complete without sampling something at Hamura. Take your pick from skewers of chicken or beef, wholesome noodles with eggs, vegetables, or seafood, and enjoy whilst sitting on wooden stools. Hamura's was recently awarded the James Beard Award for authentic, ethnic food; so don't think twice.

This old-timer is popular with golfers, shoppers, and other people who have a reason to be in downtown Lihue. It serves fresh fish, steak, and some rather creative vegetarian dishes. The restaurant is situated on Kalapaki Beach, and is known for great views. It is right in front of the Kauai Marriott Resort. The atmosphere is fun and unpretentious. Sit inside or outside; the balmy air and open windows and doors ensure a pleasurable dining experience no matter where you sit.

Kalapaki Beach Hut

The full burger spectrum
3474 Rice Street
Kauai, HI 96766
United States
+1 808 246 6330
You'll find only the best burgers at this place. The menu also has some specialty items, most notably the buffalo burger. Don't be scared off because it is different; it is actually a more health-conscious, low-fat way to go. Breakfast is available until 10:30a and the menu includes everything from classic bacon and eggs to such island favorites as mahi mahi and eggs. Enjoy the casual outdoor seating area and views of Kalapaki Bay. The bar area affords good people-watching.

Rob's Good Times Grill

Good food, good times
4303 Rice Shopping Centre # B9
Kauai, HI 96766
United States
+1 808 246 0311
This is the biggest sports bar on the island. Located a couple miles from Lihue Airport, it is one of the few places on Kaua'i that stays open into the early morning hours. In addition to seven televisions, the bar has live entertainment nightly and dancing from Tuesday to Sunday. The menu offers a decent selection of American favorites including burgers, sandwiches and pupus (appetizers). Order your libation of choice from the full bar. Low prices and casual, boisterous, cheery ambiance make this place even more appealing.

Tip Top Cafe

Simple, low-cost dining
3173 Akahi Street
Kauai, HI 96766
United States
+1 808 245 2333
This casual spot is more of a pit stop than anything. It has been serving up breakfast and lunch basics for years, with no sign of changing menus or sprucing up its interior. The dining room is not fancy, but it does the job. Stop by for a filling breakfast of eggs and sausage, or sample the beef stew available most nights. Of course, a local restaurant cannot get by without offering the plate-lunch, so you will find plenty of teriyaki options during lunch hours. Most menu items are hearty but not for the health conscious. The restaurant caters to local clientele. It does breakfast best, so try to make it in before 11a.

Whalers Brewpub

Island brews, views
3132 Ninini Point
(one mile past the Marriott)
Kauai, HI 96766
United States
+1 808 245 2000
Visitors to this relaxed restaurant can enjoy microbrews, hearty seafood plates and some of the best sunsets in the world. As if that were not enough, the proprietors also offer live entertainment almost every night. While the fare is billed as Pacific Rim, it is not the somewhat artistic, meagerly portioned cuisine you find in some Hawaiian restaurants. The dishes here are hearty and simple, while the portions are simply enormous. Accompanying them are handcrafted beers such as the Guava Wheat and Da Kine—meaning the best.
