Breathtaking views, creative cuisine |
5380 Honoiki Road (in the Hanalei Bay Resort) Kauai, HI 96722 United States +1 808 826 6522 |
The gorgeous view of the gardens of Hanalei Bay Resort, stretching all the way out to the Pacific Ocean, is only one of many reasons to frequent this restaurant. The cuisine is an inventive, pleasing fusion of traditional Hawaiian and nouveau Pacific Rim. Signature dishes include the Bali Hai Crabcakes and the Steak "Oluwalu." Fish are caught daily and prepared in a choice of ways, including "Tropical Breeze" (sauteed in island fruit salsa) and "Bali Hai Sunset" (served atop fresh vegetables and the signature crab cakes). Favorite for fine dining |
5022 Lawai Road Kauai, HI 96756 United States +1 808 742 1424 http://www.the-beach-house.com/ |
Not to be confused with Zelo's Beach House, this is a perennial favorite for fine dining. It has had a rather turbulent history that includes more than one full-scale natural disaster. Nevertheless, in spite of hurricanes, changes of ownership, and the unstable dining climate in Hawai'i, this restaurant perseveres. Its Pacific Rim-influenced menu features a nice blend of seafood, veggie and meat dishes. Diners and even the jaded local contingency just cannot get enough of the vividly colorful sunsets. Rebuilt after a hurricane all but destroyed its original structure, this breezy Poipu Beach hot spot offers broiler favorites in an informal environment. Outdoor seating provides optimal views, and the clientèle is mixed. The lunch menu includes standard favorites such as hamburgers and pupus. A deli counter is open downstairs, serving salads, sandwiches and an alternating daily special.Dinner is on the pricey side and typically includes steaks and seafood. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Best island pizza |
2-2555 Kaumualii Highway Kauai, HI 96741 United States +1 808 332 8561 |
According to pizza lovers, this comfortable, family-style restaurant offers some of the best eats on Kaua'i. Established more than 20 years ago, the family-owned Kalaheo eatery has a warm, friendly atmosphere and consistently good food that keeps its loyal clientèle coming back for more. All pies are hearth-baked and you can choose between white or whole-wheat crust. Italian sausage is made on the premises. Delicious vegetarian options are available for the non-meat eaters in the group. If pizza is not what you have in mind, do not overlook the salad and sandwich selections. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gotta-love-it burger joint |
4-1421 Kuhio Highway Kauai, HI 96746 United States +1 808 823 0069 http://www.bubbaburger.com/ |
While waiting for your meal at this burger joint, you can amuse yourself by reading about the management's latest wrangle with snobby San Francisco lawyers, tossing your spare coins at the cook's feet (try to win a T-shirt!), or plugging your ears in an effort to get away from the pounding honky-tonk. Once the food comes, you'll be happily occupied for a while. Char-grilled burgers, baskets of "frings" (fries and rings—perfect for the indecisive) and even corn dogs are on the menu. The fare is simple, cheap and tasty. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Romantic courtyard dining |
1571 Poipu Road (Hyatt Regency) Kauai, HI 96756 United States +1 808 742 1234 http://kauai.hyatt.com/ |
As if romance were not already in the Kauai air, the Hyatt has created an ocean-side 'Little Italy' for your dining pleasure. Tiki torch lighting and balmy ocean breezes add something magical to the atmosphere. Impeccably dressed and unfailingly friendly servers tend to your every need while you feast on some of the freshest, most delectably seasoned Italian food on the island. The chefs proudly use the hotel's own fresh-grown herbs to flavor the homemade pastas. Tiramisu melts in your mouth. The wine list is arguably the best on the island. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Experience a little piece of "Old Hawai'i." This Lihue restaurant is located inside the Kauai Marriott Resort and offers the best of Pacific Rim cuisine, along with outstanding ambiance and beautiful views. The restaurant is comprised of two floors and has an enchantingly tropical ambiance, complete with a small indoor waterfall. A canopy of lush foliage adds to the effect, and even the indoor dining area gives the impression of being open air. Take your time having a drink in the casual bar area or looking over the menu. The house specialty is fresh local fish, prepared any way you like. Review © 2007, Wcities |

3-2087 Kaumuali'i Highway (at Kilohana Plantation) Kauai, HI 96766 United States +1 808 245 9593 http://www.gaylordskauai.com/ |
Although it's one of the top wedding locations on Kauai, this place is equally popular with people who aren't currently (or ever) thinking of matrimonial bliss. Just about anyone can find something to enjoy, whether it's the comfortable plantation decor, the fresh seafood or the impressive wine list. Signature items include Seafood Rhapsody and Chicken Kauai. Gaylord's also does the cooking for the Kilohana Luau that takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diners here enjoy a spectacular view of the bay and Bali Hai as well as a tempting array of breakfast, lunch and dinner items. Asian nuances flavor the continental favorites featured here. Try the Baked Pacific Oysters with spinach and curried butter appetizer. Seafood is a must in a location like this—ask about the daily specials. Much of what you will find here is locally grown or caught. A seafood buffet is available every Friday night, and a champagne brunch is hosted every Sunday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nautical nuances |
5-5016 Kuhio Highway Kauai, HI 96714 United States +1 808 826 6113 |
Large portions and a cozy, tropical setting are the key features of this Hanalei eatery. Although the interior of the restaurant sports captain's chairs and other nautical accessories, it manages to avoid the hokey atmosphere characteristic of the average ocean-themed restaurant. The clientele here is mixed. Dress is casual to elegant, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Fish is the specialty, prepared just about any way you like. Prices are relatively high, but portions are sizable and most meals can be split. Review © 2007, Wcities |

It is easy to get decent Japanese food on the islands, but if you want Kauai's best, this is the place to go. Locals and tourists in the know agree that the tempura, Teppan yaki and pupus or appetizers here are the very best. As for the sashimi and sushi, they melt in your mouth. The authentic Asian decor is appealing and serene, with a choice of table or tatami seating. This family-owned business has been an island favorite for two generations. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The menu here features a wide variety of Italian classics but is distinctive in its creative touches. There are plenty of seafood options; a tribute to the Hawaiian coast locale. Its location inside the Princeville Resort virtually ensures an elegant dining experience. The interior is enhanced by hand-painted murals and artfully hanging ivy. Persian rugs accent the tile flooring, and lighting is low but warm. Glance out the window and you will see the several cascading waterfalls that gave the restaurant its name. Savory artful seafood |
5-5075 Kuhio Highway Kauai, HI 96714 United States +1 808 826 1191 http://www.postcardscafe.com/ |
Hailed by some as the finest healthy gourmet in Hawaii, this cozy little cottage cafe is a favorite among visitors and locals alike. It offers fusion cuisine with an emphasis on seafood and vegetarian options. Customer service is another specialty of the quaint cafe, and staff members will see to it that guests feel at home in the vintage-style dining room. Though there is no lunch, breakfast is served until the late morning hours every day. The casually elegant spot takes on a more formal atmosphere during dinner hours. Blackened ahi is one of the more popular entrees; taro fritters are a distinctly local pupu and well worth sampling. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fantastic Pacific Rim cuisine |

There are many celebrated chefs in Hawai'i, but Roy Yamaguchi is gradually surpassing all of the competition to become the dining scene's brightest star. His Kaua'i restaurant, like all the other Roy's restaurants in the islands, consistently earns top marks with guests and local diners. Distinctive and delicious Pacific Rim creations are served in a bustling location on the South Shore. The menu changes almost daily, but you can count on sampling the very best island seafood, produce, meats and sweets. The extensive wine list includes a dozen vintages from Roy's own label. Situated in the stunning Sheraton Kauai, this restaurant makes the most of its locale in more than one way. The menu features a panoply of exotic seafood items, most of them caught in waters just offshore and paired up with island veggies. The location of the restaurant—oceanfront on the gorgeous southern shore—cannot be beat for drama or romance. This restaurant is a favorite of tourists and locals. The Hyatt's most popular restaurant is also a great place to have a drink and soak up the atmosphere. The restaurant is surrounded by a free-form pool, which makes for a pleasant, serene atmosphere. It serves Hawaiian-inspired cuisine which focuses heavily on steak and seafood. The menu changes regularly, but you can always count on a few fresh and delicious seafood catches. The extensive wine list offers vintages from all over the world. The lounge opens a half-hour earlier than the restaurant and closes whenever patrons choose to go home. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fun North Shore restaurant |
5-5190 Kuhio Avenue (in the Ching Young Shopping Center) Kauai, HI 96714 United States +1 808 828 1435 http://www.zelosbeachhouse.com/ |
It is easy to spot this place—in the evening, the sign in front is lit by tiki torches. Inside, it is warm and cheery, with a gleaming bar and exposed-beam ceiling. The lunch menu shies away from burgers and sandwiches, instead offering wraps, omelets and fish tacos. The dinner menu features fresh fish prepared in a variety of different ways. The tropical drink menu is impressive, while the selection of specialty martinis cannot be beat anywhere in the state. Review © 2007, Wcities |
