Interactive and challenging, this museum for the smaller set is never dull. Even the adults will enjoy the activities, which often include local Washoe Indian practices and fun hands-on art projects. The grand old civic auditorium building that houses the museum is also of purely architectural interest. Special events for the kids perk up almost every weekend. See website for current listings.

The ill-fated and notorious Donner party was forced to set up camp here in the winter of 1846 when heavy snowstorms made their journey over the treacherous mountains impossible. The Emigrant Trail Museum features Donner party artifacts and many other items of historical interest including the Pioneer Monument and the Murphy family cabin site. Guided nature walks are also offered. The adjacent area boasts hiking trails, a beach, biking trails and fishing.

Amazingly well-preserved watercraft artifacts of Tahoe's maritime history are found here. The museum is used for public education and is a non-profitable organization. Boats, engines, motors, memorabilia...it's a sailor's paradise! Photographs dating back to the late 19th century are also on display. One can view almost antique hydroplanes along with modern day aquaplanes and water-skis, making this a veritable trip through history. Anglers will be happy to spot various types of fishing gear, boats and poles among the loftier watercrafts. Keen on keeping alive the local history, the museum publishes newsletters, produces videos, maintains audio/video archives and conducts regular sales. A membership contributes to the conservation of the local heritage.
