Learning as child's play |

Interactive and challenging, this museum for the smaller set is never dull. Even the adults will enjoy the activities, which often include local Washoe Indian practices and fun hands-on art projects. The grand old civic auditorium building that houses the museum is also of purely architectural interest. Special events for the kids perk up almost every weekend. See website for current listings. The ill-fated and notorious Donner party was forced to set up camp here in the winter of 1846 when heavy snowstorms made their journey over the treacherous mountains impossible. The Emigrant Trail Museum features Donner party artifacts and many other items of historical interest including the Pioneer Monument and the Murphy family cabin site. Guided nature walks are also offered. The adjacent area boasts hiking trails, a beach, biking trails and fishing. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This two-story Queen Anne-style home, built in 1902, is a good example of a Lake Tahoe summerhouse for the rich. In the upstairs of the mansion you will find exhibits pertaining to the Hellman-Ehrman family. A beautiful marble fireplace is in the living room, and restored authentic furniture and chandeliers are in abundance. On the grounds of the estate, is a cabin built in 1870 and many spectacular nature trails. Rangers conduct a 45-minute tour of the home during the summer months. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This beautiful building is a reconstruction of the gatekeeper's cabin, which served as a residence for the dam attendant at Lake Tahoe. As you casually walk through the exhibits, you will see displays about the pioneers, the area's natural history and authentic old photographs. Also on display is a beautiful collection of American Indian baskets and artifacts. There are picnic tables on the park grounds adjacent to the museum. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Memories of the sea |
5205 West Lake Boulevard PO Box 627, Homewood Lake Tahoe, CA 96141 United States +1 530 525 9253 http://www.tahoemaritimemuseum... |
Amazingly well-preserved watercraft artifacts of Tahoe's maritime history are found here. The museum is used for public education and is a non-profitable organization. Boats, engines, motors, memorabilia...it's a sailor's paradise! Photographs dating back to the late 19th century are also on display. One can view almost antique hydroplanes along with modern day aquaplanes and water-skis, making this a veritable trip through history. Anglers will be happy to spot various types of fishing gear, boats and poles among the loftier watercrafts. Keen on keeping alive the local history, the museum publishes newsletters, produces videos, maintains audio/video archives and conducts regular sales. A membership contributes to the conservation of the local heritage. Review © 2007, Wcities |
