Serious gamblers absolutely love this place. It is a throwback to the original "old Las Vegas" hard-drinking and hard-playing atmosphere. The best view of downtown can be had at Binion's Ranch Steakhouse on the 23rd floor where you can dine on some of the best steaks and prime rib in Las Vegas. The guest accommodations are adequate and comfortable and the rooftop swimming pool is a great place to relax after a day at the tables.

Bugsy Siegel once owned a piece of this property before building the Flamingo Hotel on the Strip. This structure retains much of its original look and atmosphere from the early 1940s. In the older section of the hotel, guests will still find the tile showers from days gone-by. Now, there is a new section in the thoroughly modern and comfortable hotel tower. Since the Fremont Street Experience was built, this hotel is in a very good location, just a short block from the entrance.

You will leave El Patron with a full belly at a reasonable price. -Marilee Ryan

This all-suite hotel, in addition to being just a quarter mile from the world-famous Las Vegas Convention Center, has its own top-notch conference facilities and meeting rooms. Moreover, while it is removed from the hustle and bustle of the Strip, it is only slightly less palatial than the more recognizable hotels located there. See website for complete business facility details.

The drawbridge is down, you are welcome to the castle. Enter a kingdom of knights, fair ladies and fine entertainment. You will not want to miss the nightly battle between a fire-breathing dragon and Merlin the Magician at the castle moat. Be sure to catch the fantasy fair midway and the medieval village, too. You will also be entertained during your stay by strolling minstrels. The rooms are extremely comfortable and the service is excellent. The action-packed casino is filled with table games and slot machines galore. Several fine restaurants and shopping areas round out this "city within a city."

This local favorite has the convenience of a motel and many of the advantages of a larger resort. The casino area is packed with more than 1,200 slot machines of all kinds. Live poker, keno and table games are also available, as well as a sports book. The Fiesta Bingo Hall is an extremely popular venue. Besides the gambling, there are several excellent restaurants, including Gardunos, offering Mexican food at its best. The hotel is small, but the accommodations are comfortable and adequate, and the price is easy on the pocketbook.

Originally opened as the Sundance in 1980, it later gained the "luck of the Irish" and became Fitzgerald's. There can not be a luckier place to stay in than Glitter Gulch, from the leprechaun on the roof to the six authentic blarney stones on display; the place exudes good fortune. Hotel guests will enjoy the 42,000 square foot casino, three restaurants and three bars. The comfortable rooms offer a quiet respite from the gambling excitement. Prices fluctuate widely depending upon visitor volume, but this is certainly "the" place to be in Las Vegas on St. Patrick's Day.

It now features a unique rooftop swimming pool and many great restaurants, including the Paradise Buffet, Tony Roma's and Second Street Grill. The nostalgic feel of the Las Vegas past permeates throughout this fine hotel. For excellent gaming opportunities, the bright casino is filled with every table game imaginable and slot machines galore. Rates are based on occupancy level and may fluctuate greatly. The recently renovated guest rooms sport a new look, furnished in a comfortably classic style of rich woods and soft colors.

This spot was recently added to the list of historical places in Nevada, as well it should. It was the first hotel (still in existence) to be built in Las Vegas, and it is still going strong. In the 1950s a "modern" facade was added, which remained until the inauguration of the Fremont Street Experience. Then the hotel was restored to its original charming appearance (circa 1930s), replete with flower boxes at the windows. A piano bar is situated next to the Shrimp Cocktail Deli, which still serves up 99-cent shrimp cocktails.

This 3,592-acre resort town is one of Southern Nevada's greatest trompe l'oeils. Unlike the false Venice, Paris and New York of the Strip, Lake Las Vegas goes all the way to create the illusion of a small Italian town, right down to charming footbridges, cobblestone streets, beautiful restaurants (many offering outdoor dining), and high-end shops. Of course, there are also a few casinos! You don't have to stay in the Resort to enjoy it (there is no entrance fee to the town), but if you do choose to stay here, away from the hustle and bustle of the Strip, you can choose from any number of luxurious accommodations: the Hyatt, the Ritz-Carlton, MonteLago Villages, and the Lake Villas. Surrounded by the 320-acre private Lake Las Vegas, the resort offers you the opportunity to golf, fish, sail, paddle-boat, hike, kayak or enjoy a relaxing day at the spa. Located just 17 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, the Lake Las Vegas Resort literally and figuratively offers a breath of fresh air.

This hotel classic remains one of the most popular and well-known properties in the city. Star power has been here from the very beginning, when Barbra Streisand opened the 2,000-seat theatre, followed by Elvis, who continued to appear exclusively here for the remainder of his life. You can see a statue of the King" near the front entrance. Home to Star Trek--The Experience, the resort offers virtually any amenity you could desire, including some of the most opulent suites ever created.

If you want to walk like an Egyptian, you've come to the right place. Opened in 1993, this hotel is a huge pyramid, fronted by a giant sphinx. The pyramid reaches 350 feet into the air, the equivalent of 36 stories. It is the world's largest atrium at 29-million cubic feet, and the light at the top is the brightest beam in the world.

What started out as the "Bingo Palace" in the 1970s, blossomed into the flagship of the Station Casino properties, eventually being replaced by Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa. Rooms are spacious and highly affordable, if a bit inconvenient from the action on the Strip. Famous for their excellent Feast Buffet, with carving and omelet stations, the hotel offers a variety of dining choices, from gourmet to fast food. They have kept the gigantic bingo parlor and remodeled and enlarged their casino over the years, so it's state-of-the art. The on-premise Laugh Trax nightclub offers great comedy shows each evening.

The Center Stage Restaurant, on top of the porte cochere and overlooking Fremont Street, is another landmark and excellent eatery with an amazing view.

In a city where superlatives reign, this resort really deserves a few. It boasts the tallest free-standing observation tower in the U.S. and the world's highest thrill rides, the "High Roller", the "Big Shot and Insanity, which offers a view of downtown Las Vegas from a 900 foot elevation - either a breathtaking or harrowing experience, depending on your perspective. The Stratosphere also has excellent dining, shopping and entertainment, as well as a "thrill a minute" casino. The hotel features amenities such as a roof-top swimming pool and the excellent Top of the World gourmet restaurant. A shopping arcade with international theme zones occupies level two above the sprawling casino floor.

This place is so well tended that it looks like it did when it opened in 2000. Golf players will love the proximity to three great golf courses: TPC at the Canyons, Angel Park and the Badlands. The guest rooms are oversized at 550 square feet. The earth-tone decor is restful and the furnishing comfortable. Floor-to-ceiling windows in all rooms and suites offer beautiful views. The 78,000 square foot casino has more than 2,000 slot machines, a bingo parlor, race book and 48 table games, including Pai-Gow. The facility is well equipped with fine restaurants such as Via Veneto, Primo's, Cafe Sienna and Senor Miguel's.

This hotel was appropriately christened the 'Tiffany of the Strip' when it was built in 1957 on the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevards. At that time it was truly an island, surrounded by a vast expanse of desert. Now that same location is considered one of the hottest in Las Vegas. Newly remodeled rooms in the Paradise Tower feature king beds or two queens, all with spectacular views. Jacuzzi suites are also available. The resort has a five-acre water park, with lagoons, spas and waterfalls. It even has the city's only 'swim-up' blackjack table. There is also a Wildlife Walk with tropical birds and other animals in their natural settings.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the Strip, Wynn Las Vegas opens its doors. Located on the grounds of the demolished Desert Inn, and built at a cost approaching USD2.7 billion, this mega resort proves that you can exceed the excessive. With 2716 rooms, 22 restaurants like Bartolotta Ristorante Di Mare, Daniel Boulud Brasserie and Red 8, 19 retail shops including Chanel, Dior and Oscar de la Renta, an 111,000 square foot casino, an 18-hole golf course, and a Ferrari Maserati dealership, Wynn Las Vegas reeks of over the top opulence. And if you find all these things banal, shows including Le Reve, Cirque du Soleil's Franco Dragone, and Avenue Q will win you over.
