The Headrow The Headrow Leeds LS1 3AB United Kingdom +44 113 247 8241 http://www.craftcentreleeds.co.uk |
This independently-run gallery-cum-shop is ideal for those who have always longed to own a work of art but have never been able to afford it. It stocks a wonderful and affordable selection of handmade jewellery, ceramics and prints by local and national designers. The highlight has got to be the range of jewellery which features some highly original and beautifully crafted pieces. Even if you're not interested in buying, it's worth a visit for the temporary exhibitions which offer a glimpse of what's new in the world of art and design. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Live rock |
161 Woodhouse Lane Leeds LS2 3ED United Kingdom +44 113 245 3908 |
One of the best pubs in the Hyde Park area, The Fenton offers up live music and an unusual blend of people. Its location near the university means there are always quite a few students in, but this cozy pub also attracts the local rock crowd. Live music is staged most nights so the atmosphere is always buzzing. The pub's great lunchtime menu is served from 11.30a to 2p, Monday to Friday, and from midday to 2p on Saturdays. Special drinks prices on Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday are an added bonus. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fantastic traditional picture palace |
Brudenell Road Leeds LS6 1JD United Kingdom +44 113 275 2045 |
Opened in 1908 as a hotel, the Hyde Park became a cinema in 1914 and remains one of the few picture palaces in Britain battling the growth of multiplexes with the help of its determined supporters. A listed building, the Hyde Park has been lovingly preserved and maintains original features, such as the exterior façade, gas lighting and Edwardian balcony. The only cinema in Leeds to offer 'art house' films, in addition to mainstream and classic films, the Hyde Park is the most unique cinema experience in the city. There are regular matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Live music and beer |
Chorley Lane Leeds LS2 9NW United Kingdom +44 113 203 1861 http://www.josephswell.co.uk/ |
This modern pub is justifiably famous for its excellent live music and friendly atmosphere. The capacious function room is where it all happens, playing host to around 65 bands every month. The club has hosted many big names in the music circuit, playing enroute to fame, fortune and stardom. If you are a regular, you might just spot the next big band. The small, snacky menu includes Cajun burgers and other tasty treats. Many performances are free, others range from GBP2-5; call for details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Famous the world over |
The University of Leeds Leeds LS2 9JT United Kingdom +44 113 244 6586 http://www.leedspiano.com |
They say that all good things come to those who wait and the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition is no exception. Held every three years, the competition has come a long way since it was first launched by Fanny Waterman and Marion Thorpe in 1961. Televised by the BBC, it now attracts worldwide attention. Out of 200 competitors, only six will reach the final stage which is held at the Town Hall. (Stages 1-3 of the competition are held at Great Hall, University of Leeds). Prize money is awarded in excess of GBP55,000. Admission is free to spectators. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Excellent temporary exhibitions |
Woodhouse Lane Leeds LS1 3HE United Kingdom +44 113 283 3130 |
The Leeds Metropolitan has an excellent gallery with a regular turnover of temporary exhibitions. These ultramodern paintings are visual festivals that you will want to return to again and again; shame Leeds has possession of them for only a month. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Atmospheric cabaret |
Royal Park Road 39 Queen's Road Leeds LS6 1NY United Kingdom |
This is the best night out in Hyde Park—not that there is too much competition. Held in the basement of the dingy Royal Park Pub, lots of talented local musicians and comedians show their latest stuff off to a regular and enthusiastic local audience. The quality and style of the performances varies but the atmosphere in this smoky little place is always great. Phone for details of forthcoming events. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Student local with entertainment |
39 Queen's Road Hyde Park Leeds LS6 1NY United Kingdom |
Although it's a pretty average drinking and lounging pub, there is plenty of entertainment to attract the visitor to the big and comfy Royal Park. There's a pub quiz on Monday, karaoke on Tuesday and live bands three times a week. Undoubtedly, the best night to come here is Tuesday when the basement opens for a cabaret. There's a no smoking room and an outdoor area for the summer. An extra bonus is the fantastic selection of meal deals for £2.99 including vegetarian bake, lasagne and burgers - all with chips. On Sunday, there is a particularly good breakfast. Food is served between noon and 4p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An architectural delight |
Victoria Square Leeds LS1 3AD United Kingdom +44 113 224 3801 |
A stunning hybrid of classical Greek and baroque styles, this mid-19th century public building is perhaps Leeds' most well-known landmark. Built by Charles Broderick between 1853 and 1858, it features a façade of giant columns supporting an elaborate domed tower. The richly decorated interior is equally spectacular, with statues by Matthew Noble sitting beneath ornate plaster ceilings. As well as being of great historical and architectural interest, the Town Hall is one of the city's premier music venues, hosting events including Lunchtime Organ Music and the International Concert Season. Small but interesting |
Woodhouse Lane Woodhouse Lane Leeds LS2 9JT United Kingdom +44 113 233 2777 http://www.leeds.ac.uk/gallery/ |
This gallery may be small but it is full of interest. The Permanent Collection Room houses a changing exhibition of works that belong to the University. Highlights include paintings by Jacob Kramer, John Baptiste Camille Corot and Vanessa Bell. The temporary shows are just as impressive with recent exhibitions by a diverse range of artists, including Quentin Bell and Lydia Bauman. The gallery closes during exhibition changeovers and vacations, so please phone in advance. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you're a bit of a culture vulture, chances are that you'll find something to entertain you at The University of Leeds. From its range of arts and lecture theatres, the university brings you musicals, plays, lectures and classical features. Music fans should definitely make an effort to catch the regular Thursday lunchtime classical music recital by talented Leeds students in the Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall. Performances and lectures are in the University's Parkinson Court, Great Hall, Raven Theatre, Emmanual Theatre and Riley Smith Hall. Most of these theatres have disabled access.
