Leeds city centre boasts an excellent range of drinking and dining establishments to suit all palates and pockets.

Dining

Gastronomes could head straight for either of the city's two Michelin-starred restaurants; Pool Court at 42 or Rascasse. Other fine dining establishments include Leodis, Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor, Sous Le Nez en Ville and Brasserie 44 (neighbour to Pool Court at 42).

A wealth of outstanding, slightly less formal restaurants are scattered across the city. Delicious Mediterranean/British food can be had in and around the Exchange Quarter at Brigg Shots, Calls Grill, Shear's Yard, Art's Café, Oporto and Velvet. According to The Sunday Times, The Cactus Lounge, next to the West Yorkshire Playhouse, is one of the country's top four Mexican restaurants. For fine French food and wine, visit the subterranean La Grillade. Quality Italian food is served at The Italian Job and the long running Bibi's. Shabab and Darbar both serve good Indian cuisine. Chinese, Thai and Japanese restaurants are mainly clustered around the Grand Theatre and at the top of Vicar Lane. Try Canton Flavour, off The Headrow, for lunch with a difference.

Excellent cafe-bars are to be found all over Leeds. Try Moderno, Metz, Cuban Heels, The Elbow Room, Revolution, Milo or Norman - all in and around the Exchange Quarter. Chain outlets, such as All Bar One, Bar 38, Henry's and Parisa are clustered around The Headrow and in the financial quarter. Soul Kitchen, also in the financial quarter, deserves a special mention. Café Rouge, Est, Est, Est have branches in the city. There are two branches of Pizza Express. Unlicensed eateries, such as Roots and Fruits and Kada's are of excellent quality.

In the outlying areas of Leeds, visit Citrus Café in Headingley or Grove Café in Hyde Park, both unlicensed. The Ferret Hall Bistro in Headingley serves quality English food. On the city's outskirts, close to the BBC and the University, Strawberry Fields serves delicious wholesome food and has a good choice for vegetarians. For Italian, The Flying Pizza in Roundhay and Salvo's in Headingley are both popular, long-running establishments well worth a visit. Leaving the city via Kirkstall Road, you will find TGI Friday's, Frankie & Benny's and Quincey's. Tariq's and Nafee's serve up the customary curries in student land.

Drinking

Bar life in Leeds is booming. There are distinct areas to the city and if you follow this guide, you can't go far wrong:

The area around the Corn Exchange, known as the Exchange Quarter, is filled with great bars. Choose from Metz, Milo, The Townhouse, Po Na Na, Pitcher and Piano, Fudge, Cuban Heels, Oporto, Velvet, Norman, Moderno, Art's Café, Revolution, Café Junction, The Elbow Room, Hakuna Matata, Break for the Border and Dimitri's. Call Lane should form the backbone of your bar crawl. Several bars now have late licenses - Revolution, Norman and The Townhouse. Clubbers should head for Think Tank, Po Na Na or The Elbow Room. Many of these places are chameleon-like changing from sedate cafe-bars, to thriving evening quality drinking establishments.

Travel away from the Exchange Quarter up Boar Lane. Bars like Yates' Wine Lodge, Square on the Lane, Observatory and Bar Censsa line the route. After this, you can head up to Majestyk or Jumpin' Jacks for a dance, a kebab and an early morning fight for a cab. Head up Park Row away from City Square and you're deep in the financial district. There are bars and restaurants here that will keep you amused enough. Parisa, The Firehouse, The Old Monk, All Bar One and O'Neill's are all on or around Park Row or East Parade. In The Headrow area, try Empire, LS One, Bar 38, or The Slug and Lettuce. There are more pubs and bars clustered around the Civic Hall and library.

Go down The Headrow, towards Eastgate, turning off at the Odeon cinema. Lovers of quality independent bars, you're back on safe ground now. Try North, the fantastic Mojo, Le Beatrute, The Atrium - another bar with late license and club. The Mint Club (home of Basics on Saturday night) is on Harrison Street and Club Heaven and Hell is opposite The Atrium. So, there's plenty of quality dining, drinking and dancing to be done in the city. Head for the area that most suits your taste. There are other hidden gems around the city like The Wardrobe, Whitelocks and Joseph's Well.

With its dark wood interior and brown leather sofas lining the windows, All Bar One attracts a mature crowd consisting mostly of business people. Subtle lighting and an ample seating area provide the perfect location for long lunches and informal chats, although the lack of music makes it a noisy place to be if the bar is busy. The menu is excellent, and offers an extensive choice of tasty, moderately priced food. This is a smart bar for smart people.

Snappy service, tasty food and a relaxed atmosphere make Bar Censsa a great place for a pit stop. The bright interior is a real mishmash of fabrics and furniture, giving the bar an appealing, offbeat look. The food is good too, with an impressive range of vegetarian dishes such as hot pepper, onion and mozzarella ciabatta sandwiches. It's a bit quiet during the day but at the weekend, the bar is invaded by the bar-crawl crowd that make their way down the Boar Lane drag. Look out for the novel e-mail order form (on the bar's website) where you can place your order so it's ready when you arrive - perfect if you are in a hurry to get to the train station which is just a couple of minutes away.

Welcoming atmosphere, cool decor and great music...Le Beatrute has got it all. During the day, it's a good place to come for a cheap lunch, which is hard to find in this part of town. In the evening, especially at the weekend, it is one of the few bars where you can get a seat and the music isn't too loud to have a conversation. Le Beatrute is getting a reputation as an undiscovered secret so perhaps it won't stay like this for long.

A fixture in Leeds for the past 25 years, this quality restaurant is definitely not your local pizza parlour. After admiring the façade of imposing pillars, you walk into an elegantly furnished, spacious interior. It's always lively with smartly-clad waiters rushing about to a soundtrack of chatter and clattering crockery. There may even be an Italian crooner in the background, singing romantic ballads. Specialty dishes are yummy and yes, they do serve pizzas and pasta dishes. For meat-lovers, there are mouth-watering choices such as venison in wild cherry sauce.

An incredibly popular little cafe/restaurant in the heart of studentville, Citrus could easily be missed, tucked away as it is from the main road. Obviously attracting a lot of students from the area, Citrus still manages to attract a wide range of clientele - from couples to large parties. City Centre

Leeds
United Kingdom
The fact that it is a pleasure to wander around the largely pedestrianised city centre is due to the Victorian town planners whose network of elegant arcades and formidable municipal buildings still affirm its position as a leading centre of commerce, culture and the arts. Leeds is probably the premier shopping centre of the north - the Corn Exchange and Victoria Quarter offer a rich variety of luxury and specialist shops that complement the city's traditional markets and modern high street shops and malls. The centre has welcomed a profusion of new cafes, bars, restaurants and nightclubs to meet the demand for increased amenities brought by the recent growth in the city's business communities. This is particularly apparent at Leeds Waterfront, where derelict canal-side buildings have been revamped or replaced by high-profile commercial development and heritage attractions.

This Mexican restaurant is ensconced just off the fashionable Calls, behind the Corn Exchange. With its rich colour scheme, you know it must be Cuban. The bar is always very popular thanks to its cosy, intimate atmosphere. Whether the menu is particularly Cuban or just Mexican is open to question, but either way, the food is good. Parisa

A wine connoisseur's delight
14 Park Row
Leeds LS1 5NR
United Kingdom
+44 113 244 9209
Wine connoisseurs might be forgiven for thinking that they have died and gone to heaven when they visit Parisa. There's over 250 wines to choose from, all of which can be taken away at a discount. There's much more to Parisa than this, though. Large with luxurious sofas and subdued lighting, Parisa has a mellow mood that makes it much more welcoming than its local competitors. The food is not bad either, attracting a seemingly never-ending stream of office workers. Highlights of the extensive, reasonably priced menu include seafood and bangers and mash.

Pizza Express

Business district branch
Park Square West
Leeds LS1 2PS
United Kingdom

http://www.pizzaexpress.co.uk
The location of this Pizza Express branch means that it is often jam-packed at lunchtime with corporate types from surrounding offices. The décor is sparse, but there is lots of space and it's very bright and clean looking, fitting in perfectly with the other buildings in the business quarter. The pizzas are delicious concoctions and are priced at reasonable rates. Two excellent choices are the Four Seasons (mushroom and pepperoni) and the Cajun (with prawns). There is also a selection of salads and pasta dishes.

Po Na Na

Stylish Moroccan-inspired club
2 Waterloo House, Assembly Street
Assembly Street
Leeds LS2 7DA
United Kingdom
+44 113 243 3247
A capacious venue, Leeds' Po Na Na attracts twenty-somethings that love to dance. Wooden floors, Moorish decor, palm trees, a balcony and a wide range of cocktails associate the club with a more affluent clientele than other clubs in Leeds. Although it's popular, Po Na Na's midweek events sometimes lack the customers needed to get a good atmosphere. Thursday's revolving schedule includes mostly hip hop events whilst Friday's The Northern Line is a busy funk and hip hop night. On Saturdays guest DJs play funk, hip hop and soul.

+44 113 244 4242
http://www.42thecalls.co.uk
This upmarket eatery offers fabulous British cuisine to punters with plenty of cash to splash. It is particularly pleasant in summer when the balcony is open to diners who want to eat alfresco. Its Michelin star is well-earned with delicious dishes such as grilled dover sole with Whitby crab in a lemon and dill sauce on the menu. A two-course meal costs around GBP30. It is part of the fabulous 42 The Calls hotel so why not make a whole weekend of it?

Rascasse

Michelin-starred quality
2 Canal Wharf
Water Lane
Leeds LS11 5PS
United Kingdom
+44 113 244 6611
One of the smartest, most upmarket restaurants in Leeds, Rascasse has a great location, right on the canalside. The sharp, stylish interior and excellent service make it the ideal place to go if you want to impress. The food is renowned - it's one of only two Michelin-starred restaurants in Leeds - but expensive. The menu changes each week but mainly features French and Mediterranean dishes. There is always a delicious fish dish - such as roast salmon - on the menu.

Revolution

Classy and popular
48 Call Lane
Leeds LS1 6DT
United Kingdom
+44 113 243 2778
Wooden floors, great lighting and a big bar make this the ideal location for all your socializing needs. Each day, it undergoes a startling transformation from a pleasant, sedate cafe-bar during the day, to a very popular late-night drinking (and sometimes dancing!) establishment in the evening. The excellent DJs play funky music six nights a week. If you prefer to drink rather than dance, you'll be transfixed by the selection of vodka. There is just about every quality brand of vodka available as well as a massive range of special recipe frozen flavored vodkas, with changing seasonal specials. Good value, tasty food is served daily until early evening.

Salvo's

Highly acclaimed Italian cuisine
115 Otley Road
Leeds LS6 3PX
United Kingdom
+44 113 275 5017
It may be small but this Headingley restaurant is very highly regarded for its fine Italian fare. Despite its stylish air, Salvo's attracts students, locals, families, and business folk alike, providing a laid-back and friendly atmosphere. Classic Italian dishes are served alongside more imaginative specials by the efficient staff. Unfortunately, bookings are not taken, so either get ready to eat early or expect to queue at peak times.

Shabab

City centre Balti house
2 Eastgate
Leeds LS2 7JL
United Kingdom
+44 113 246 8988
This is a handy place to eat if you are in the city centre and want something spicy. The choice of dishes is great and its top floor restaurant is decidedly more decadent than other, lesser, Indian restaurants. The Shabab offers an 'eat as much as you can' Indian buffet at lunchtime and in the evening. Lunchtimes are very popular with the business crowd but booking is not essential in this large restaurant.

A favourite with professionals, Shear's Yard is a subterranean restaurant, intimately lit for a cosy meal but large and welcoming for bigger groups. Al fresco dining is available here in the summer. The extensive tapas menu includes baby mozzarella, tomato and basil salad or chicken wings with lime. The à la carte menu changes seasonally but includes dishes like rump of lamb with a confit of garlic, pomme fondant and lamb jus or supreme of corn-fed chicken with pot roast baby vegetables and a mustard spatzle.

A classy bar and eatery, the Slug and Lettuce is head and shoulders above its nearby rivals. While offering a wide range of spirits and beers, the Slug and Lettuce also has an eclectic wine list with choices from Europe, Australia, South Africa and the New World. Soul Kitchen

Funky basement bar
11 York Place
(The Basement)
Leeds LS1 2DS
United Kingdom
+44 113 242 1202
This funky little basement bar is rather hidden away in the depths of the business district which could be why it has not been widely discovered yet! The decor is stylishly bohemian with lots of pink, bubbles and groovy waitresses. DJ's play every night of the week and on the weekend it has become a popular place for hanging out before the night really begins. Caribbean soul food is served up for lunch; call in advance if you want to dine in the evening.

Sous Le Nez En Ville

Fine wining and dining
9 Quebec Street
9 Quebec Street
Leeds LS1 2HA
United Kingdom
+44 113 244 0108
This aptly named basement restaurant is located deep in the heart of the financial quarter between City Square and East Parade. The lack of windows doesn't detract from the sophisticated atmosphere of this popular businessmen's haunt. Sous Le Nez has class, but it's not unfriendly. It's one of the best restaurants in the city, with its stylish French menu and excellent wine list. Fish dishes feature heavily and come in at around EUR12. This is more expensive than other restaurants, but the experience lives up to expectations.

This quiet little bistro is easily recognizable as you head from the city centre towards Leeds University thanks to its constantly changing, brightly painted exterior. It serves tasty, simple food - like pizza and fajitas - throughout the day, and is especially popular with vegetarians. Other people come here for the cheap doubles bar upstairs. An upstairs function room is available to hire (please enquire for further details).

TGI Friday's

Madcap chain bar with entertainment
Wellington Street
Wellington Street
Leeds LS3 1LH
United Kingdom
+44 113 242 8104
Located a little way out of the centre, this popular venue has the added attraction of being open very early in the morning. TGI tends to appeal to the younger crowd who were weaned on this sort of cuisine though the atmosphere is so friendly that anybody will feel welcome here. The menu is based around steaks, chicken, fish and Mexican food - not forgetting the ubiquitous burger! If you've got the stomach for it, you can order Steak Coated in Whiskey. There is an impressive choice of cocktails.

Tariq's

A taste of India in Headingley
14 St Michael's Road
Headingley
Leeds LS6 3AW
United Kingdom
+44 113 275 1881
In the heart of studentville, Tariq's is just around the corner from two of the most popular student pubs and St Michael's Church, although if the truth be told, it's the pubs which provide the majority of the clientele! Tariq's has much more of an Indian feel than some of its cheaper counterparts in Leeds. Despite the fact that most customers have probably dulled their taste buds at local alehouses, it continues to provide some excellent curries including a tasty chicken tikka masala. The restaurant is licensed too. Vegetable options are confined to side orders.

During the day, the airy downstairs bar, with solid wooden tables, serves tasty and interesting bites to eat such as spinach and ricotta pancakes with side salad. In the evening, the music is turned up loud and the Townhouse fills up with a lively young crowd of students and locals.

Exclusive and stylish gay/mixed venue
Duncan Street
Off Call Lane
Leeds LS1 6NJ
United Kingdom

This stylish yet relaxed backstreet bar and restaurant has a real mixed bag of regulars from lunching office workers and relaxed evening diners to a happy, stylish and camp weekend crowd. Beautifully decorated, with a cloud-painted ceiling and lots of blue and purple decadence, it manages to maintain a chic atmosphere without being stuffy. The food is delicious and modern, yet not overly expensive. There is a Mediterranean and East Asian flavor to the dishes - try feta cheese and spinach parcels or Thai green mussels.

Wardrobe

Highly regarded bar, club and restaurant
6 St. Peters Square
St. Peters Square
Leeds LS9 8AH
United Kingdom
+44 (0)113 383 8800
http://www.thewardrobe.co.uk/
This cool venue is home to a renowned restaurant and well-stocked cocktail bar on the ground floor, an exhibition gallery on the first floor, and a rocking basement club which features Friday night's Cuban groove extravaganza Casa Latina. The popular Yardbird Suite on Saturday nights has now been laid to rest and has been replaced by a new series of events hosted by DJs and MCs—check the website for forthcoming events. The Wardrobe Restaurant is pricey yet luxurious with a Mediterranean-inspired menu that is served from midday to 3p and 5:30p to 10p. Millefeuille of Aubergine and Parmesan Risotto are just two of the highlights. Another innovation is the introduction of the tasty Round Midnight menu from 10:30p.

Whitelock's

Full of charm
Trinity Street
(off Briggate)
Leeds LS1 6HB
United Kingdom
+44 113 245 3950
If you like your pubs on the traditional side, you'll love Whitelocks. Dating from the 1700s, this small and cosy pub is ideal for a quiet drink. The gleaming brass fixtures and fittings lend a quaint charm that is increasingly rare in city-centre pubs. This, and the tempting selection of hand-pumped ale on offer (including John Smith, Ruddles and Theakston Old Peculiar) has helped make Whitelocks a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike. If you're hungry, try the excellent pub food. The menu includes Whitelocks seafood pie and beef steak pie, both costing around £5.

Yates's Wine Lodge

Brewery-owned chain pub
24-28 Boar Lane
Leeds LS1 5DA
United Kingdom

Whether you're in London or Leeds, it's almost guaranteed that there'll be a Yates's Wine Lodge nearby. Like all the other branches, the Leeds outlets are very welcoming and decorated using lots of brass and wood. It's always busy, especially at lunchtime when the office set pour in to take advantage of the pub's good value, good quality food which features traditional favorites like scampi and chips. This place is always a safe bet.
