Time for lunch now and just around the corner you can find Casa Italia and Casa Bella, or try De Coubertini's, an exciting themed sports bar serving delicious light meals. For the afternoon's delights head towards the Pier Head, the River Mersey, and Albert Dock. Walk or ride on one of the circular mini buses that run from the city centre to Albert Dock at regular intervals. Once there you can enjoy a 50-minute cruise on the Ferry across the Mersey and view the spectacular sights of the famous waterfront; The Royal Liver Building complete with mythical Liver Birds, the Cunard and Port of Liverpool Buildings are all magnificent in grandeur and an architectural vision.

Back on dry land, take a pleasant stroll to the Museum of Liverpool Life. A footstep away is the renovated Albert Dock complex offering a haven of goodies. Shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs are in abundance, and don't forget a visit to the Tate Gallery. Within the gallery, the Taste cafe bar with its boat-shaped mezzanine level is well worth a visit. After a light snack you could visit four floors of displays that make up the largest modern art collection in the North of England. Back among the Colonnades, there are plenty of souvenirs, jewellery, sweets, books and toys to buy. Children can examine Fred the Weatherman's Island and perhaps take a trip on the ship that sails around the dock throughout the day.

Casa Italia

Authentic Italian atmosphere
40 Stanley Street
Liverpool, Merseyside L1 6AL
United Kingdom
+44 151 227 5774
Established for many years, this popular and bustling restaurant is set in the central shopping area. A wonderful aroma entices customers into a lively, spacious interior that is always busy and full of chatter. The ambience is distinctly European as delicious pizzas are loaded into huge ovens and apron-clad waiters rush around with enormous pepper mills. Pasta and pizzas are the main feature on the menu, but you could try a risotto or a chicken speciality. The sweet trolley is full of Italian style desserts.

City Centre

Liverpool
United Kingdom
Great for a shopping expedition, lots of variety but compact enough to see what's on offer in one day. The main pedestrian area and two indoor shopping centres - Cavern Walks and Clayton Square - have a wide range of stores and specialised designer outlets. Nightlife in the city centre is buzzing, and the choice of venues can be overwhelming. The Cavern Quarter around Mathew Street has some great pubs and excellent restaurants. If you want to eat out the only problem is what to choose: Russian, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Chinese or Portuguese, there is something to suit every palate. An abundance of fine architecture and culture are visible throughout the city centre. The grandeur of St Georges Hall, two Cathedrals, the Museum and the Bluecoat Centre, are just a few examples.

Royal Liver Building

Mythical liver birds
Pier Head
Pier Head
Liverpool, Merseyside
United Kingdom
+44 151 236 2748
This grand landmark proudly stands at the Pier Head, adjacent to the Mersey Ferries entrance. Opened in 1911, it is still the head office for the Royal Liver Friendly Society and home to the well-loved Liver Birds that loom high above the city streets. The birds - a mythical interpretation of the cormorant - are eighteen foot high and made of copper. A local legend says that the city would be submerged under water if the birds ever flew away, oh yes and Elvis is still alive. The building is also distinguished by two towers adorned with the largest public striking clocks in Britain. Tours can be arranged by contacting the building manager. Admission: free . Tours are by appointment only

Tate Gallery

Modern art gallery with excellent restaurant
Albert Dock
Liverpool, Merseyside L3 4BB
United Kingdom
+44 151 702 7400
Liverpool's Tate Gallery is the northern connection to the world-renowned Tate Gallery in London and the lesser-known St Ives Tate. Situated at the Albert Dock, the gallery boasts the city's largest contemporary art collection, with many temporary exhibitions aiming to challenge aspects of social or personal thought. The building itself is well planned and subtle enough to disappear behind the art, yet still provides a pleasant atmosphere in which to spend an afternoon. There is a well-stocked gift shop on the ground floor and the Taste Restaurant provides great food.Admission is free.
