Making medical history

http://www.medicalmuseums.org/...
In 1928 a young Scot named Alexander Fleming made a chance discovery which was to prove one of the most significant medical advances of the last century. This little museum in the archives of St Mary's Hospital sits on the actual site of the laboratory where Fleming made his discovery of penicillin. It features an exhibition, a reconstruction of his working environment and a video which narrates the extraordinary story. Amazingly, the scientific community ignored Fleming's work for more than a decade before a group of chemists in Oxford came up with a way of purifying penicillin. Fleming's perseverance eventually earned him a Nobel prize, and the rest, as they say, is history.

This is a great club for meeting people and seems to attract a lot of singles between 30-40 years old. Surprisingly, the decor in Aquilla (which looks like the designs you find on Ancient Greek pottery) actually looks really good, and the swimming pool seems more relaxing than exercise inducing. Facilities include a gym, large studio (boxercise, ski fitness and yoga) and therapy treatments (from massage to allergy testing). Personal trainers are available if you want to get yourself into top condition, but those after a bit more pampering will find sun beds and a health and beauty salon.

Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, rising like a fairytale palace over London's outskirts, is a multipurpose facility devoted to Hinduism and Indian culture. First and foremost, it is a place of worship. For non-worshippers, a number of exhibits and displays offer glimpses into Hindu beliefs and the Indian experience in general. Furthermore, the architecture and interior design are wonders to behold in and of themselves. A series of religious and community-related events are held here throughout the year. Banqueting House

Not Just For Feasting
Whitehall - Main Building
London SW1A 2HB
United Kingdom
+44 0 870 751 5178
http://hrp.org.uk/banquet
Whitehall Palace was the primary residence of the royal family from 1530 until the building's destruction by fire in 1698. The Banqueting House is the last remaining section of this historic palace, and is an excellent example of the architecture of that time period. It was built to house various masques, balls, plays, and important state events. It has seen other, more nefarious moments, being the site of the execution of King Charles I. After the fire destroyed the rest of the palace, the building was used first as a church chapel and then as a museum for the state. Be sure to leave some time to explore the displays, and be sure to check out the stunning interior decoration, especially ceiling artwork by Sir Peter Paul Rubens.

+44 0207 839 2006
http://www.benjaminfranklinhou...
Built circa 1730 and retaining most of its original features, this beautifully restored Georgian building is the only surviving residence of Benjamin Franklin. Serving as his home during the 16 years he spent in London as a mediator, it is essentially the first U.S. embassy. Designed to be a historical experience, the Benjamin Franklin house is now a "dynamic museum" and educational institution. State of the art lighting and projection technology recreate the fascinating life and discoveries of this politician, inventor, scientist, and philosopher, while the Student Science Centre offers a hands on look at Franklin's London based discoveries. Opened on Ben's 300th birthday in 2006 and just steps from Trafalgar Square, this is a wonderful variation from traditional museums and well worth the stop.

You've probably seen these buses - along with London double-deckers, tour buses and more tour buses. Regardless of your usual attitude towards guided tours, these hop-on, hop-off tours are a good way to get an overview of the city, and you can make mental notes of where to go for a more thorough visit. The price you pay with The Big Bus Company is for a 24-hour ticket; during this time you can travel anywhere on the tour network, which encompasses stops over just about all of central London. Included in the price is a free walking tour and Thames River cruise, as well as numerous discounts for West End shows. Guide tapes are available in 12 languages, and the company won the London Sightseeing Tour of the Year award. Be careful when choosing the open-air rooftop, because London is notorious for fickle weather.

Blue Badge Guides are official tourist guides who have to go through training and selection before certification by the Institute of Tourist Guiding. In London, the training program is 18 months, so it's no surprise that you're most likely going to get an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Prices vary according to the tour, and special foreign language tours are also conducted. The service is fully flexible - you can make up your own tour and go on it whenever you want to but remember it costs more at night. One day a year Blue Badge Guides invite everyone to a free programme of tours and talks. This International Tourist Guide Day is usually in February.

There are parks everywhere in London, so when the kids are tearing the house up, it's easy to find a place to go. But the worst thing about London is the rainy, wet weather - there are only so many times you can go to the library or a puppet show with the little ones. Thank God for Bramley's Big Adventure, and indoor playground where kids can burn off their energy on the bars and swings. There are separate areas for older children, babies and under fives, and a further quiet area is sectioned off for the parents and nannies.

Great Russell Street

United Kingdom
+44 20 7323 8299
http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk
The British Museum is one of London's top tourist attractions as well as a major scholarly resource. Its collection was bequeathed to the nation in 1753 and the Museum's distinctive Greek revivalist structure was built during the 19th Century. The collection expanded massively during the heyday of the British Empire, leading to the Museum's notoriety for plundering sources all over the globe and leaving it with over 6.5 million objects to look after. The displays cover about 14 acres and it is simply too tiring to tackle them all in one visit. The best way is to pick a collection or exhibition that interests you, explore that, and make return visits. And if you haven't got time for a proper visit, drop in for a coffee at the lovely Court Restaurant. Admission is free but charges may be made for temporary exhibitions.

As you can guess from the name, this unique museum's amusing displays of mechanical toys and sculptures border on the bizarre but it isn't really cabaret. What started out as a quirky crafts shop in Cornwall evolved into a popular exhibition of coin-operated mechanical toys. The collection of toys grew and grew until it found refuge in Covent Garden, but exhibitions also tour countries as far afield as Japan. Described by the founders as the amalgam of art, craft and business, the shop sells handmade automata, mechanical wooden kits, books and videos.

This well-established sports centre caters mostly for local residents and houses a well-equipped gym (for which all new members need an induction course), a large dance studio, two swimming pools and a large sports hall. In the sports hall you can take part in tennis, badminton, netball and hockey; the studios offer classes in everything from ski fitness to salsa, so it's more than likely they'll be able to provide classes in your sport of interest. One of the advantages of using Chelsea Sports Centre is that it's a community centre, so expect cheap prices and a friendly atmosphere that many private clubs lack. However, be wary of changing opening hours due to use by large school groups - it's best to call and check what's free for use before turning up.

Golden Square

More about the Square
Golden Square
London, London W1F 9LA
United Kingdom
Lying to the north of Piccadilly Circus, is Golden Square—a small park formerly known as the Gelding Square. The statue of a mythical figure, Georgiys II, stands right in the middle of the square. The benches placed around the square usually have teenagers or older people sitting, catching up on gossip. The square is popular as a political and ambassadorial district housing many embassies.

Golders Hill Park

Next to Anna Pavlova's house and attached to Hampstead Heath is this delightful park. The large expanse of gentle rolling verdure is one of those places where you just have to kick off your shoes and feel the grass between your toes. It's a great spot for picnics, but there is also a cafe near the park entrance. At the bottom of the park there are several tennis courts; perfect for if you want to do something a bit more energetic. Half way down the park is an animal enclosure with an aviary and a selection of goats, deer and wallabies - a sort of mini zoo that will delight children. Each section has a brief write-up of the animal and its origin. Flamingos perch around the pond, ducks dive in and geese fly overhead, and the beautiful flower garden behind it is well worth a detour.

If you're in the mood for some farcical Christmas fun, head to Covent Garden for the annual Great Christmas Pudding Race, a staple of London's holiday festivities since 1980. Here you will see hundreds of runners bedecked in fancy holiday garb as they navigate through an obstacle course-- balancing a Christmas pudding as they go! Before and after the race, there is live music and entertainment to keep the energy level high, though at this event it is hard to be anything but full of celebratory cheer. Though the event itself is free to spectators, all proceeds from the race go to benefit the Cancer Research Fund.

Greek Street
Soho Square to Shaftesbury Avenue

Restaurants, historical sites and houses of different eras speckle the famous Greek Street in the SoHo district of London. Many businesses along the street are famous, or infamous, in their own right. The notorious pride of the landlord of The Coach and Horses pub attracts patrons to test his patience. Other notable attractions are Les Cousins (folk music club), Pillars of Hercules (pub dating back to 1733), and House of St Barnabas (inspiration and setting of the Dickens' classic, A Tale of Two Cities.)

Grosvenor Square

Historic Square
Grosvenor Square
(at Brook Street)
London, England W1K
United Kingdom
Located in the exclusive Mayfair district, Grosvenor Square was established in 1721 and met with immediate popularity. Named for Sir Richard Grosvenor and referenced in several plays, movies, and songs, this square has always been the "in" place to live among the aristocracy. The square's most popular reference comes in "Street Fighting Man" by the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger witnessed a rally and riot here at the American Embassy against the Vietnam War in 1968 and wrote the song shortly afterwards. Whether you're here for the bourgeois atmosphere, the embassy, the culture, or the Stones you are sure to enjoy your visit.

HMS Belfast

London's only floating museum
Tooley Street
Morgan's Lane
London, London SE1 2JH
United Kingdom
+44 20 7940 6300
http://www.iwm.org.uk/belfast/...
HMS Belfast is one of Europe's largest preserved warships—she was launched in 1938 to serve in both World War Two and the Korean War. She is the last surviving example of the great warships built for the Royal Navy. In her day she was one of the most powerful vessels of her type with the most complex machinery and equipment. Vast, during World War Two, she was home to almost a thousand men who had to live in cramped conditions. She retired from service and from protecting the Empire's trade routes in 1965 and has now been converted to a floating naval museum with seven decks for visitors to discover. Children under 16 are allowed in for free.

Hackney City Farm

Farm life in Hackney

Hackney
London, London E2 8QA
United Kingdom
+44 20 7729 6381
http://www.hackneycityfarm.co.uk/
Adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for children is this two-acre animal farm. The emphasis is on giving people the chance to see a real working farm in the city centre, so dont expect a mini petting zoo. Animals on the farm include cows, pigs, rabbits, poultry and everything else youd expect to find on a domestic farm. You cant feed the animals, but little ones will love the chance to get up close to real live farmyard friends. There are also paddocks and gardens for adults to stroll through and admire. The farm also runs pottery and upholstery classes in addition to a summer play scheme. Call for information about adopting animals, volunteering, farm community projects and school visits.
