These 30-year-old stables are ideal for anyone looking for tailored lessons as they have a reputation for specialty instruction. Would-be riders from five years up are accepted, and the large indoor and outdoor arenas have disabled access. Choose from jumping, dressage, carriage driving and side-saddle, and, if you're lucky, exhilarating, though infrequent, hacks on the marshes of Walthamstow and Leyton. Despite riding's traditional image as a genteel countryside pursuit for the landed gentry and girls with names ending in A, the emphasis here is on instruction of basic riding skills to underprivileged local children. The stables are open to the public but demand is high and you can expect a two-month wait at least. Indoor and outdoor arenas and 22 ponies and horses are available, and all instructors are approved by the British Horse Association. Rates are £8 per hour for children and £13 per hour for adults.

As one of London's best-known stables, the Wimbledon Village Stables have a very comprehensive program from dressage and jumping to small escorted hacks. The stables own 25 horses and offer full and working liveries. It's worth getting membership for the additional discounts, priority booking and updates. Riding is usually associated with the quaint countryside or toffs. Here, the emphasis is on instruction of basic riding skills to the underprivileged and disabled with the goal of passing exams. Hacks across Wormwood Scrubs Park are open to the public, but there is usually a long waiting list. Because this is a non-profit making charity, rates here are only £6.50 per half-hour class.
