Social fitness club |
11 Thurloe Place London, London SW7 2RS United Kingdom +44 20 7225 0225 http://www.sarova.co.uk/sarova... |
This is a great club for meeting people and seems to attract a lot of singles between 30-40 years old. Surprisingly, the decor in Aquilla (which looks like the designs you find on Ancient Greek pottery) actually looks really good, and the swimming pool seems more relaxing than exercise inducing. Facilities include a gym, large studio (boxercise, ski fitness and yoga) and therapy treatments (from massage to allergy testing). Personal trainers are available if you want to get yourself into top condition, but those after a bit more pampering will find sun beds and a health and beauty salon. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Friendly and colourful |
612 Fulham Road Fulham London SW6 5RP United Kingdom +44 20 7731 7633 |
Bravura is a friendly and colourful creative art studio where you can come and spend a few hours decorating ceramics, doing a bit of glass painting, making a mosaic or designing some jewellery. There is a set studio fee of £5 for adults and £3 for children. If you feel like daubing a bit of paint on some clay, there are about 60 different vessels to choose from. Bravura is hugely popular with kids and runs the Splat Club during the school holidays, specifically for 5-12-year olds who want to get messy. It hosts kids' parties, too, at a cost of £14 per child. Community sports centre |
Chelsea Manor Street Chelsea London, London SW3 5PL United Kingdom +44 20 7352 6985 http://www.rbkc.gov.uk/az/az.a... |
This well-established sports centre caters mostly for local residents and houses a well-equipped gym (for which all new members need an induction course), a large dance studio, two swimming pools and a large sports hall. In the sports hall you can take part in tennis, badminton, netball and hockey; the studios offer classes in everything from ski fitness to salsa, so it's more than likely they'll be able to provide classes in your sport of interest. One of the advantages of using Chelsea Sports Centre is that it's a community centre, so expect cheap prices and a friendly atmosphere that many private clubs lack. However, be wary of changing opening hours due to use by large school groups - it's best to call and check what's free for use before turning up. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If mayhem, rowdiness and public displays of drunkeness are your idea of a good time, then you will certainly want to catch a sporting event at Craven Cottage. For years this venue has been making headlines as much for the action and antics in the stands and by the fans as for the sports on the field. Home of the Fulham Football Club since 1896, football fans from all over England make their way to Craven Cottage for regional, national and international games. Capacity is over 22,000. Guided tours are available of the historic grounds; check website for dates, times and prices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large fitness centre for fanatics |
116 Cromwell Road, Point West Kensington London, London SW7 - 4XR United Kingdom +44 20 7341 6401 http://www.davidlloydleisure.c... |
Tucked behind Sainsbury's supermarket, this David Lloyd centre has a whole host of fitness apparatus spread over six floors. The club has excellent facilities, including a fully air-conditioned state-of-the-art gym, cardio theatre and free weight apparatus, although these are dominated by serious-looking bods busy pumping iron. There are also two wooden-floored exercise studios, a rather chlorinated 20m indoor swimming pool, a sauna, steam room, spa pool, a health and beauty suite, a children's splash pool and a crèche. Staff are friendly, the locker rooms are luxurious (complete with lovely fluffy towels), and the in-house restaurant is surprisingly good. There's also a lounge and bar area – ideal for people watching as plenty of posers come and go. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historic Square |
Grosvenor Square (at Brook Street) London, England W1K United Kingdom |
Located in the exclusive Mayfair district, Grosvenor Square was established in 1721 and met with immediate popularity. Named for Sir Richard Grosvenor and referenced in several plays, movies, and songs, this square has always been the "in" place to live among the aristocracy. The square's most popular reference comes in "Street Fighting Man" by the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger witnessed a rally and riot here at the American Embassy against the Vietnam War in 1968 and wrote the song shortly afterwards. Whether you're here for the bourgeois atmosphere, the embassy, the culture, or the Stones you are sure to enjoy your visit. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exclusive fitness and sports centre |
Watermeadow Lane London, London SW6 2RR United Kingdom +44 20 7371 7700 http://www.harbourclub.co.uk/ |
This exclusive Chelsea club, where the late Lady Di worked out, has both style and substance. Featuring all sorts of tennis courts (fifteen in all), a 25m swimming pool & waterfall, children's pool, two exercise studios, fitness room, sauna and steam room, clubroom, restaurant/bar, private function room, laundry service and sports shop, the Harbour Club is very comprehensive. There's also a health clinic, which offers more holistic advice and treatments, including Pilates, acupuncture, electrolysis and non-surgical face-lifts. Kids are well catered for here too, with a crèche and specially designed classes from ballet to art and craft. Enquire about single, dual, off-peak and overseas memberships - there's a plethora of membership types available, though they don't come cheap. There aren't particularly good public transport links to the club, but ample parking is available for members. Review © 2007, Wcities |

188a Fulham Road Chelsea London, London SW10 9PN United Kingdom +44 20 7352 9452 http://www.holmesplace.co.uk/ |
Part of the well-renowned chain, this club is great to work out in on the way home from work, and is very popular with Chelsea locals and 'It-girls'. Facilities aren't particularly diverse, but will be ample for most people, and the club seems to be much more relaxed than many of its competitors. The large gym has a women-only section, and over a 100 classes are held there every week. Personal trainers are available on request, as are physiotherapists. The dance studio offers classes from Pilates to salsa, and there's also a swimming pool. If you'd like some pampering after your workout, there's a health and beauty salon as well as a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Call for details of membership prices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Health club for the upper crust |
17A Old Court Place 3rd Floor London, London W8 4EP United Kingdom +44 20 7761 0000 http://www.holmesplace.co.uk |
This club is arguably the most exclusive of the Holmes Place chain. Famous faces have included a pregnant Madonna and the place is suitably snobby to boot. Located discreetly several floors up inside an apartment block, the layout is confusing and the facilities aren't as comprehensive as you would expect. The large gym houses a women-only section and hosts personal programmes. There are two dance studios, a leisure pool, and alternative and holistic treatments available. Membership is limited, but if you join here off-peak, you can use all the other Holmes Places on-peak - a perk bound to be reflected in the price. Review © 2007, Wcities |

South Carriage Drive Hyde Park London, London W2 2UH United Kingdom +44 20 7262 3474 |
This club, in beautiful Hyde Park, has a small club house with six high quality outdoor courts. Mini golf, petanque and lawn bowling are offered too, and the club has a refreshingly diverse clientele. Tennis lessons (group and private, for all ages and levels) and social play are available at reasonable prices, and coaches can be hired without prior arrangement on the day you play (although its best to book a lesson in advance as they tend to get very busy). The courts are open to the public, but if you'd like advance bookings, reduced fees and other discounts, it's more profitable to buy an annual membership. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Evening discos take place at the weekend, when a 70s glitterball and a music-hall organ take centre stage - the lights are low and the music pumping. Warm up and refuel at the rink-side cafe, which supplies frothy hot chocolate, cold drinks, chocolate bars and chips to wet-bottomed skaters. Linden House Upper Mall, Hammersmith London W6 9TA United Kingdom +44 20 8748 3280 http://www.lcsc.org.uk/ |
One of West London's best-kept secrets is the great sailing that takes place between Hammersmith Bridge and Chiswick throughout the year. Linden House is an old riverside building and home to this sailing club, associated with Thames sailing for over 100 years and, more recently, a London retreat for offshore yacht sailors. The club has a varied membership base, and benefits include low cost dinghy hire for Thames sailing, yacht crewing opportunities via their growing offshore group, booze cruises, social activities and preferential rates for theory and practical courses. Annual fees vary, but as the club wishes to attract young people, they are working on very reasonable rates for under-20s and students. If you are a beginner, you'll learn all the basics, including first aid, knots, theory and capsize drill; life jackets are provided. Review © 2007, Wcities |
