An ideal daytrip, Legoland, in picturesque Windsor, is just 3/4 of an hour from Clapham Junction station. From Lego-brick versions of famous West European sites and attractions to the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, theres something for everyone, including Lego pigeons on the rooftops. There are rides for the older kids, but plenty of gentle ones that smaller kids can enjoy, like the boat-rides which tell classic fairy tales using moving models made of Lego. Theres also a Duploland for very little ones, and Lego rooms in cases of bad weather. Plus, parents will be grateful to the designers of the Legoland complex for keeping the Lego-merchandise at a discreet distance.

There is even a re-created Victorian classroom to find out what schooling was really like in the 'old days'. Enquire about the History Club for adults interested in the history of the East End. Richmond Park

Where deers still roam free
Richmond
London, London TW10 5HX
United Kingdom
+44 20 8948 3209
The Park was enclosed as a hunting park by Charles I in 1637 and still retains many ingredients of a medieval deer park. Essential to its character is the rich landscape of semi-natural acidic grassland, areas of bog and bracken, wetland, woodland and ancient parkland trees, and the herds of fallow and red deer that still roam the park. The resplendent Isabella plantation is especially noteworthy, particularly in early summer when the rhododendrons are in full bloom, but the park is lovely any time of year. Bring along a football, a picnic, go for a bike ride, inline skating or take the dogs out for some fun and fresh air. There are designated cycle paths so you don't have to grapple with the cars that can also drive through the park. Open until dusk, it is the perfect park to choose for a few hours of fresh air or even for a day trip.

Be a masochist and scare yourself with a nocturnal walk around Jack the Ripper's playground. At the end of the 19th century, a psycho left female victims (mainly prostitutes) so mutilated that people were scared to walk the streets after dusk. Walk the very streets tainted by his victim's blood and learn about the Ripper's possible identities (which to this day remains a mystery), listen to anecdotes, see gruesome photos of the scenes of crime and play a little role-playing game near the end of the tour. Meet at 6.45p at the exit of Tower Hill underground station - there is no need to book and you only pay at the end of the tour.

Much hay is made about the might of the once-powerful Royal Navy - how it ruled the seas and ensured that the sun never set on the British Empire. But what of the Royal Air Force? Were it not for the brave boys of the RAF, surely we'd all be speaking German right now. Thus, a right handsome museum is in order. At the RAF Museum, you'll be treated to a dramatic retelling of the story of the famed organization - and the history of flight in Britain and around the world. You'll see real planes, jets and bombers, as well as engines, weapons and other vehicles integral to any serious war effort. You'll see uniforms, medals and other awards, photo galleries and informational archives. See website for complete visitor details.

This is one of Greater London's most popular theme parks, but it's especially geared towards children and teenagers it is also a great day out for the entire family. Expect the usual American fare - scary rollercoasters, water rides, shows, and Disneyesque costumed characters roaming throughout the park. The smaller kids will enjoy the real farm, although the park's real strengths lie in its water rides. Top attractions include Tidal Wave, the highest water ride in Europe, and the Logger's Leap log Flume. Expect to get very, very wet. Opening hours vary from season to season.

Tiller Centre

Leisure Centre
Tiller Road
Docklands
London, London E14 8PX
United Kingdom

This lively leisure centre has just added a brand new gym. It caters mainly for the city crowd, but is also used by the local community. You should ring the centre before you come swimming, because there are a number of classes which might clash. The dance studio is busy and sweaty! But don't be put off as they offer a really good range of classes. Finally, there is a creche for the younger kids.

Victoria Park

Old Ford Road
London, London E3 5SX

Victoria Park was opened in 1842, and was the first Victorian park to be owned by the public. It's located in the East End and has a huge pond that makes it reminiscent of Hyde Park, but a lot smaller. There are numerous attractions to keep the children amused, including a deer park, small animal enclosure and a children's playground. There are also football and cricket pitches and a bowls green, so there's always some activity going on. It's also an excellent place for inline skating.

Wimbledon Common

Office: Manor Cottage, Windmill Road
Wimbledon Common
London, London SW19 5NR
United Kingdom

http://www.wpcc.org.uk/
Once an area famous for duels, and still famous for the children's TV characters, The Wombles, Wimbledon Common is a wonderful place to go to escape the frenetic pace of London life. Dotted with lakes and ponds, the common is a great sporting (horse riding, bicycling, golf and football are favourites), picnicking and walking spot. Stretching on for miles, it's possible to walk or ride all the way to Richmond Park, although you will have to cross the busy A3 via the footbridge to do it. It's worth making your visit incorporate the Wimbledon Windmill, which was built in the early 1800's and has a museum attached. Pop in next-door to the tearooms for refreshment or for a weekend fry up. It's also worth visiting the Georgian Cannizaro House Hotel nearby. Just off West Side on the Common, the gardens are open to the public. With its ornamental lake, peaceful woodlands and rolling lawns, you feel as if you've rolled back the clock to another century.
