Blue Badge Guides are official tourist guides who have to go through training and selection before certification by the Institute of Tourist Guiding. In London, the training program is 18 months, so it's no surprise that you're most likely going to get an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Prices vary according to the tour, and special foreign language tours are also conducted. The service is fully flexible - you can make up your own tour and go on it whenever you want to but remember it costs more at night. One day a year Blue Badge Guides invite everyone to a free programme of tours and talks. This International Tourist Guide Day is usually in February.

It may no longer be a 24/7 operation, but the opening hours of this gym are still a godsend to the erratic schedules of overstressed City workers. Directly across the river from the Houses of Parliament, County Hall used to be the home of the Greater London Council, the former London local authority. Now it houses the London Aquarium, a Marriott Hotel and this marvellous club. Featuring a 6,000 square foot gym, a 25m long swimming pool, more than 30 classes a week, personal trainers, beauty treatments and swish locker rooms - a rarity even at the plushest of health centres. What more could you ask for?

Dave Prowse was Darth Vader in the original Star Wars series. This is enough of a reason on its own to check out this club in our opinion! However, there is also a friendly atmosphere, a gym and a dance studio to keep you amused. The Incredible Hulk actor, Lou Ferrigno, and Daniel Day Lewis have also been spotted here, so you never know who you might bump into!

A great community spirit here at this lively sports centre. You can work out in the gym and dance studio, but you should definitely take advantage of all the sports on offer. These include football, basketball, korfball, netball and martial arts. Plenty of areas for the kids to play as well if you bring them along. The centre also hosts children's parties.

There is a very young feel to this fitness club, which is part of a nationwide chain. The gym is enormous and spans two rooms, whilst the dance studio offers a wide range of classes including boxercise, aerobics and step. The swimming pool is fairly small and mainly given over to leisure swimming. There are three squash courts for hire and beauty treatments and altenative health therapists are all on hand.

http://www.iwm.org.uk/belfast/...
HMS Belfast is one of Europe's largest preserved warships—she was launched in 1938 to serve in both World War Two and the Korean War. She is the last surviving example of the great warships built for the Royal Navy. In her day she was one of the most powerful vessels of her type with the most complex machinery and equipment. Vast, during World War Two, she was home to almost a thousand men who had to live in cramped conditions. She retired from service and from protecting the Empire's trade routes in 1965 and has now been converted to a floating naval museum with seven decks for visitors to discover. Children under 16 are allowed in for free.

http://www.hrp.org.uk/webcode/...
Hampton Court Palace is a magnificent blend of Tudor and Baroque architecture, covering six acres alongside the River Thames. After confiscating the palace from Cardinal Wolsey, King Henry VIII lived here with some of his many unfortunate wives. Hampton Court Palace is famed for its magnificent gardens, where music and flower shows take place in the summer. Otherwise, choose from one of six different tours, some feature costumed guides. The maze is another very popular attraction but expect to get lost. To get to Hampton Court Palace, take the river launch from Westminster, Richmond and Kingston for a scenic trip up the Thames. Alternatively, a train departs every thirty minutes from Waterloo to Hampton Court Station. Admission: GBP11 adults; reduced prices for maze only.

This ultra-modern aquarium is one of the largest in Europe, containing over one million litres of water. Three hundred and fifty species are displayed within the three large tanks - everything from brown sharks, sand tigers and piranhas to jellyfish and tropical fish that swim right before your eyes. A "touch pool", otherwise known as the Beach Pier, allows for the assisted handling of starfish, hermit crabs and friendly rays. But the main attraction is the Atlantic Tank, where you can view divers, protected from sharks and other scary creatures, during feeding times.

This is not so much a museum as a gruesome reproduction of all things that illustrate the darker side of European history. Located underneath London Bridge, in a basement location with ghastly sounds seeping through the front door, this is a sort of haunted house for adults. It has won the Best Unusual Venue tourism award several times in the past. Wander through rooms depicting royal executions, vicious murders, various torture and execution devices, and even the Great Fire of London. The addition of Hollywood-style sound effects and lighting is also a nice touch. The newest addition is the Labyrinth of the Lost - the world's largest and scariest mirror maze. It's all unbelievably tacky, yet good fun in a morbid sort of way be warned, however, that its probably not suitable for small children, and all children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

Also check out Halloween Fest (Oct 8-31) and Satan's Grotto (Dec 10- Jan 3).

Admission: adult £14.95, seniors & students £12.25; children £10.95

Known as both the London Eye and the Millennium Wheel, this huge 450-foot ferris wheel on the South Bank gives a fabulous bird's eye view of London, if your stomach is strong enough. Its inception in the beginning of 2000 honoured the Millenium; and the spectacular views stretch for 25 miles on a clear day to include views of Windsor and Tunbridge Wells. Up to 25 people can fit in each of the wheel's "capsules." The wheel turns surprisingly slowly-it takes thirty minutes to go round, so there's plenty of time to spot landmarks and take photos.

Designed by Sir Horace Jones and opened in 1894, Tower Bridge is famous the world over. Due to the volume of river traffic at the time, Tower Bridge was designed to have twin bascules that could be raised. This famous landmark also has fabulous views over the Tower of London and of river life on the Thames. Visitors can ascend by the North Tower and traverse the river protected from the erratic English elements in an enclosed walkway before descending by the South Tower. Also on offer is The Tower Bridge Experience, a fascinating exhibition situated inside the towers and engine rooms. Want to get a great view of the Tower Bridge from afar, but not too far? Head on over to Potters Fields Park, right next to City Hall, where you can enjoy a picnic with a view.

Tower Bridge is one of the most instantly recognisable of London's landmarks. Built at the close of the 19th century, the bridge is in a neo-Gothic style with twin towers, and is unique in having bascules, which can be raised to give access to tall ships. The stone clad towers offer a rich insight into London's history, plus panoramic views across the skyline enable you to see the city's finest architecture. The Tower Bridge Exhibition is a self-guided tour which introduces you to the colorful history of the Bridge from Victorian times to the present day, how it was built and takes you along the dramatic glass-covered overhead walkways which run between the towers and then to the Victorian Engine Rooms, where you will be able to see the original engines that used to power the Bridge.

Admission(rates through 31 Mar 2005): £5.50 adult, child 5-15 £3.00; student/senior with ID £4.25 ; Free under 5. Joint tickets for The Monument and the Tower Bridge Exhibition are also available: £6.50 adults; £4.50 concessions; £3.50 children.

Tower of London

Beefeaters and Crown Jewels
Tower Hill
London, London EC3N 4AB
United Kingdom

The Tower of London is mainly perceived as a medieval place of imprisonment and execution. Nine hundred years of history are embraced within its thick, turreted walls. Even though the Tower's violent years are long gone, an aura of death and medieval torture remains. Today, guided tours are available. The main attraction for most visitors is the breathtaking Crown Jewels. It is also a chance to see the legendary ravens who live within the walls. Folklore has it that if they ever leave, Britain will again fall to foreign invasion. Interestingly enough, orders have been received to clip their wings!

Winston Churchill's Britain at War Museum

V for victory
64-66 Tooley Street
London Bridge
London, London SE1 2TF
United Kingdom
+44 020 7403 3171
http://www.britainatwar.co.uk
This superb exhibition will give you a real flavour of what it was like to live in Britain during the Second World War. Experience a bombed department store, an air raid shelter, read newspaper cuttings from the Blitz or just marvel at wax models and authentic, old-fashioned paraphernalia from the time. Kids can try on real uniforms and gasmasks and test their knowledge in quizzes and worksheets. There's heaps of information on Britain's most famous Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, as he was the figurehead of the war, but be warned, the exhibition revels in the glories of victory so don't expect much mention of the full savagery of the war. Opening hours below are for April-September. Times are 10a-4:30p M-Su October-March. Admission: £5.95 adults, £3.95 concs, £2.95 children, £14 family ticket.
