Origin of The Ashes |
Kennington Oval The Brit Oval London, London SE11 5SS United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7582 6660 http://www.surreycricket.com/ |
After Lord's, The Oval so named because of its shape, is probably the most famous test ground in the country. It plays host to Surrey's home matches in all competitions, but more importantly is the venue where England usually play their final home match of the season. The first ever test match on English soil was played here in 1880, when England beat Australia, with the legendary W.G. Grace scoring a hundred on his debut. The ground also gave rise to the "Ashes" trophy, which is played for between England and Australia. This happened in 1882 when England lost terribly against the Aussies. The Sporting Times ran a story next day stating that "the body of English cricket would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia!" Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sport on Hampstead Heath |
Highgate Road London, London NW5 1QR United Kingdom +44 20 7435 8998 http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk... |
Once the venue of choice for Roundhead political meetings during the Civil War, Parliament Hill at Hampstead Heath now boasts a 400-metre running track, ten tennis courts, the Lido swimming pool and open-air bathing ponds. Chock-a-block in the summer, the Lido is famed for its hardy winter swimmers. After all the exercise, a walk on the wildlife-rich heath will show why it has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by English Nature, and why poets and novelists such as Keats, Coleridge, and D.H. Lawrence chose to live nearby. Review © 2007, Wcities |
