11 Thurloe Place London, London SW7 2RS United Kingdom +44 20 7225 0225 http://www.sarova.co.uk/sarova... |
This is a great club for meeting people and seems to attract a lot of singles between 30-40 years old. Surprisingly, the decor in Aquilla (which looks like the designs you find on Ancient Greek pottery) actually looks really good, and the swimming pool seems more relaxing than exercise inducing. Facilities include a gym, large studio (boxercise, ski fitness and yoga) and therapy treatments (from massage to allergy testing). Personal trainers are available if you want to get yourself into top condition, but those after a bit more pampering will find sun beds and a health and beauty salon. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Whether you're in need of a great place to workout or just somewhere to get away from it all, Cannons West End is the place to do it. The premier health club - one of Cannons' 13 London-based clubs - spans seven floors and is filled with the latest top-of-the-line equipment. In addition, the relaxed atmosphere is beautiful and inspiring and probably the reason that Cannons West End is so popular with the nine to five crowd looking to unwind after a long day. There are two large gyms as well as a dance studio that offers classes in step, body pump, yoga and circuits. A small pool caters to leisure swimming, and a full range of beauty treatments is always available. The club is also equipped with a steam room, spa, Jacuzzi and sunbeds. In addition, Cannons offers a great nutritional program, a free membership to Cannons Golf and a wide range of adventure weekends through its Cannons Adventures program. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Community sports centre |
Chelsea Manor Street Chelsea London, London SW3 5PL United Kingdom +44 20 7352 6985 http://www.rbkc.gov.uk/az/az.a... |
This well-established sports centre caters mostly for local residents and houses a well-equipped gym (for which all new members need an induction course), a large dance studio, two swimming pools and a large sports hall. In the sports hall you can take part in tennis, badminton, netball and hockey; the studios offer classes in everything from ski fitness to salsa, so it's more than likely they'll be able to provide classes in your sport of interest. One of the advantages of using Chelsea Sports Centre is that it's a community centre, so expect cheap prices and a friendly atmosphere that many private clubs lack. However, be wary of changing opening hours due to use by large school groups - it's best to call and check what's free for use before turning up. Review © 2007, Wcities |

East Heath Road Hampstead London NW3 United Kingdom +44 20 7485 4491 |
When the heat is on in London, come to Hampstead Heath to cool down in the old-fashioned bathing ponds. One of three, Hampstead mixed bathing pond is literally a large pond with a silt bottom so there's no nasty chlorine but it is a bit murky. Bathing is free for all competent swimmers over eight years old, and the pond is open from daylight till dusk during the summer. Beware, the pond can be heaving when it's hot, but take a picnic to the heath to lay back and enjoy the sunshine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Millfield Lane Hampstead Heath London, London N6 United Kingdom +44 20 7485 4491 |
Enjoy a swim in the fresh air at this men-only bathing pond. As it's all natural water, there's no chlorine to sting your eyes, and it's free, so there's no sting to your wallet either. Open all year round, although you'd have to be tough to brave the weather in the winter months, the ponds are open for a refreshing dip anytime between daylight and dusk. Boys over eight who can swim confidently can join in the fun, while ladies can swim at the nearby Kenwood Bathing Pond. Part of the well-renowned chain, this club is great to work out in on the way home from work, and is very popular with Chelsea locals and 'It-girls'. Facilities aren't particularly diverse, but will be ample for most people, and the club seems to be much more relaxed than many of its competitors. The dance studio offers classes from Pilates to salsa, and there's also a swimming pool. Health club for the upper crust |
17A Old Court Place 3rd Floor London, London W8 4EP United Kingdom +44 20 7761 0000 http://www.holmesplace.co.uk |
This club is arguably the most exclusive of the Holmes Place chain. Famous faces have included a pregnant Madonna and the place is suitably snobby to boot. Located discreetly several floors up inside an apartment block, the layout is confusing and the facilities aren't as comprehensive as you would expect. The large gym houses a women-only section and hosts personal programmes. There are two dance studios, a leisure pool, and alternative and holistic treatments available. Membership is limited, but if you join here off-peak, you can use all the other Holmes Places on-peak - a perk bound to be reflected in the price. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Linden House is an old riverside building and home to this sailing club, associated with Thames sailing for over 100 years and, more recently, a London retreat for offshore yacht sailors. The club has a varied membership base, and benefits include low cost dinghy hire for Thames sailing, yacht crewing opportunities via their growing offshore group, booze cruises, social activities and preferential rates for theory and practical courses. Annual fees vary, but as the club wishes to attract young people, they are working on very reasonable rates for under-20s and students.
