Award-winning Amato continues to serve what is arguably the best coffee in London. The 1930s-style classic Italian caffé provides a bustling backdrop for friendly, assured service. However, reaching your seat may take longer than expected as you have to pass the sensational patisserie counter with its sumptuously tempting array of gateaux, pastries and biscotti, all freshly made on the premises, is a true gauntlet for any dieter. Amato, named after the former pastry chef, also serves excellent salads, pastas and sandwiches which enter the upper echelons of Soho café prices, but quality and generosity bespeak satisfaction and value, especially the croque monsieur. Tables are shared in busy periods, adding to the overall conviviality. Amato is frequented by a sprinkling of new media Soho trendies, but never enough to cripple the atmosphere. Amato's ability to rise above this is ultimately proof of just how good a café it is.
