Forget yoga! Pilates (pronounced pill-are-tes) is the miracle exercise, according to its growing number of followers. A relatively new discipline developed in the early 20th century, it became popular with dancers and athletes in rehabilitation. Actors and singers also found the slow, thorough stretching and breathing exercises beneficial to their posture. Anyone can take pilates, young or old, athletic or couch potato - while the exercises are gentle, they will make you aware of muscles you never knew you had and over time contribute to a flat stomach and straight posture. Private studios have mushroomed around the city, but classes are still extremely popular, and this South Kensington branch is regularly booked up. Call for a list of approved pilates teachers and other information. Review © 2009, Wcities |
