Charles I Commemoration

Commemorating King Charles I
St. James Place
(Whitehall)
London, London SW1A 2ER
Every year on the last Sunday in January, this much-celebrated tradition takes place. Produced by the English Civil War Society, the colorful event commemorates the execution of King Charles I in 1649. In honor of his self-declared martyrdom, cavaliers dressed in 17th century attire retrace his last walk from St. James's Palace through The Mall to the Banqueting House in Whitehall. Upon reaching the Banqueting House, a ceremony that includes wreath laying and prayers begins. Admission is free.
