Cochrane Theatre

London's first all-Black performing arts venue
Southampton Row

In 1992, the Talawa Theatre Company, in partnership with the London Institute, opened the refurbished Cochrane Theatre as a venue for its own works - and thus, the first Black theatre in London was created. The theatre is small, but the atmosphere is so electric it often feels twice the size of its 314 seats. It hosts a variety of music, dance, plays, poetry and cabaret events, with recent shows having included: Cinnamon Veil, an epic swash buckling affair that leads us across the seas in search of Eden; an alternative version of Sleeping Beauty; and Shakespeare's Pericles.
