Converted from an office building, the Columbia Bar, on the corner of the Aldwych and Houghton Street, has huge plate-glass windows giving a double-sided view of your surroundings. Fairly-recently refurbished, the feel is modern, although it's hard to tell what its raison d-etre is exactly: it's a bit too smart to be a pub, but too much like a pub to be a bar. No matter: the atmosphere is friendly and bustling, with upstairs split into two levels with plenty of seating; while the cosy vault-like bar downstairs is quieter, one wall lined with snug hiding-holes filled with comfy curved seating. Drinks are the usual fare with a notably above average selection of beers. And the bar staff know how to make a mean Bloody Mary. Tasty bar snacks are also on offer all day long. As far as clientele is concerned, there is a wide mix of old and young, cool and not so cool. Review © 2009, Wcities |
