Everything boisterous, anything vibrant and never-ending energy make Daddy Cool, a Romeo and Juliet musical about the love between two Londoners from enemy families, entertaining all the way. Based on songs from Boney M and including works by Milli Vanilli, The Eurythmics, and No Mercy, these pop tunes are easily insinuating and will leave you feeling as giddy as a schoolgirl. Directed by Andy Goldberg, with We Will Rock You music experts Mike Dixon and Steve Sidwell, famous songs like "Brown Girl in the Ring" and "Sweet Dreams" are easily packed into the plot. Main characters Sunny (Dwayne Wint) and Rose (Camilla Beeput) sing beautifully together, and while their relationship is far too picture perfect, the plot twists keep it interesting. From Rose and Sunny's respective mother's grudge against one another, to the competition between opposing dance troupes, to the final shooting, their relationship endures. Caribbean in spirit, with strong break dance numbers, the cast works hard to engage the audience. From their talent and the big budget costume/set changes you may begin to feel as through you are watching a film. Just when you think the production has concluded the cast is transported to island culture with energy that transforms the playhouse into a disco. Once the fire (literally) on stage goes out, and the oversized snake is pulled backstage, on your way out, look up and enjoy the ten-foot paper machete bird that flies above.
