Having long looked to Paris and Milan for inspiration, London is now generally regarded as the design capital of Europe, maybe even the world. So, where better to showcase young, contemporary designers than here? Over 450 companies exhibit, specially selected by a panel of industry experts. Recent exhibitors have included B&B Italia, SCP, Cappellini, Helen Yardley, TwentyTwentyOne and The Igloo, and all genres of modern design are represented. Unfortunately the first few days of the fair are for trade only, with only the final day open to the public.

The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts are more commonly known as "The Proms". Usually held at the Royal Albert Hall, these performances of classical music have an informal atmosphere and music lovers pack the stands every year. The Last Night of The Proms is world famous and it is extremely difficult to get tickets for that night. Tickets are by lottery and in order to qualify, you must have attended at least six other concerts during the season. Because the Last Night is inaccessible to most people, Hyde Park now hosts an open-air concert on the same night with tickets available to the general public. Performance times vary.

The changing of the guard is common in most European capitals, but nowhere is it more famous than in London. The new guard leaves Wellington Barracks a few minutes before the change and marches down Birdcage Walk to Buckingham Palace. The actual ceremony (which lasts around 40 minutes) takes place within the gates of the palace, so get there early to secure a good vantage spot. In addition, the St. James's Palace detachment of the Queen's guard marches to Buckingham Palace at 11:15a and back to St. James's at 12:10p. Free admission. See website for dates scheduled.

The large Chinese population of London celebrates its culture with a noisy and bright procession of musicians, lion costumes, dancers and martial artists making their way through the streets from Trafalgar Square. Later, more dancing takes place in Chinatown itself, and food stalls selling delicious Chinese delicacies line the streets. All in all, the atmosphere is fantastic and admission is free.

The bar, though dark and gloomy with only a brick fireplace as its décor, is one of the coolest places to hang out. Hordes of youngsters hang out here to swing to the DJ's music. Sometimes this nightclub also doubles up as an exhibition space. Europe's most creative illustrators, fashion designers, photographers and painters display their work here. Furthermore, you can feel good about all the bidding and spending here; some of the money that the bar generates, right from the entrance fee to the exhibition fee, goes to charity.

The 5th of November commemorates the failure of renegade Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up Parliament for religious motives in 1605. This is one of the country's most popular classical music festivals, held in the beautiful setting of Hampton Court Palace. The festival, held annually, harks back to an era when monarchs living in the Palace had guests, and it certainly feels like you've entered a time warp. The concerts themselves are always fantastic and the atmosphere friendly. Demand for tickets is always high, so be sure to get hold of a program early. Performances have a 75-minute interval, during which members of the audience are free to picnic in the grounds or look around the palace.

Not as famous as the collegiate Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race, this race involves 420 teams, 65 of whom are from outside the UK. The best view is from Chiswick or Hammersmith Bridge as sometimes the whole width of the Thames is filled with boats, and you can hear all the coxes shouting at once. Starting times are usually in the early afternoon. Look out for supporters of the University of London teams, and join in the vocal support!

The Horse Guards Parade is the second most popular ceremony outside of the Changing of the Guard. In fact, the two mounted cavalry regiments of the Queens Household Regiments, who march in the Changing of the Guard, make up the Horse Guards Parade. The parade commences at 11:30a every day in the summertime, and every other day during the winter. It takes place outside the Horse Guards Building on Whitehall, which was built in 1745 to house the old palace guards. The Horse Guards Building is also the setting for Trooping the Colour.

London is still a global fashion force. Home to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Clements Ribiero and Ronit Zilkha, London leads the pack when it comes to eclectic style. New York may be sleek, Paris classic, Milan chic, and Tokyo super-trendy, but London mixes it all up to great effect. Two annual fashion weeks, sponsored by The British Fashion Council and Vidal Sassoon, bring you the best of the new season's collections. While the Natural History Museum is usually the site of most catwalk shows, many designers are taking their shows to other, hipper venues.

Not surprisingly, this festival attracts some of the best works of its genre, as well as directors and actors who often make appearances at interviews and screenings. One of the most conspicuous recent trends has been the way in which the mainstream has been redefined by what would have once been considered 'queer cinema' and films with mixed casts. One of Britain's biggest motoring spectacles with an estimated one million people lining the route, this June run (not race) heads through central London, Westminster, Lambeth, Thornton Heath, Croydon, Purley, Redhill and Gatwick, before taking B-roads from Crawley to Brighton. Only cars built before 1 January 1905 are eligible. Of course, the ripe old age of many of these veteran cars mean that quite a few don't make it to the finish line. Cars are limited to 20 mph, so it's no wonder that the race starts at 7.30am.

Regent Street, one of the most elegant streets in London, runs through the very heart of the capital, from Regents Park to St James's Park. Along the way it takes in Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus and Trafalgar Square. Once a year the street closes, stages are set up and a large party is had. Live music, including both pop and classical, and theatre performances all feature, as do many a celebrity appearance.

There is no better place to enjoy a dose of culture on a warm summer's evening than in the Open Air Theater's large amphitheater amidst the greenery of Regent's Park. Every summer, two Shakespearean productions and one non-Shakespearean production are staged by competent and spirited casts. Kate O'Mara, Felicity Kendal and Jeremy Irons have performed here, so you could catch the next big star in action. The shows run from June until early September with both matinee and evening performances. Ticket prices vary, check the Web site for performance schedule and details.

London's biggest free, open-air music extravaganza is a crowd-puller every year. It's not just the entertainment scene that attracts folks, but also the fact that the event celebrates multiculturalism and takes a stand against racism. The best in the music industry come here to perform before crazed fans of all ages. Famed hip-hop artistes like De La Soul and Public Enemy and reggae idols like Gregory Isaacs and other acts often put in an appearance. Sustenance in the form of refreshments keeps the buzz alive, while a comedy pavilion keeps the kids occupied. Check the Web site for details and head over early; crowds of more than 100,000 are anticipated each year.
