Sale of the century
Royal College of Art
Kensington Gore, South Kensington
London SW7 2EU
United Kingdom
+44 20 7590 4444
The 20th and 21st Century British Art Fair gives you the chance to appreciate the diversity of two centuries of painting, sculpture, photography and ceramics under one roof. It's the only fair for British Art from 1900 to the present day. Leading dealers will exhibit historic British art from the Impressionists to Pop Art, to current work, by both known and undiscovered artists. Prices range from a few hundred to many thousands. Somewhat appropriately, the fair is showcased in the Royal College of Art and often features work of past students.

The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts are more commonly known as "The Proms". Usually held at the Royal Albert Hall, these performances of classical music have an informal atmosphere and music lovers pack the stands every year. The Last Night of The Proms is world famous and it is extremely difficult to get tickets for that night. Tickets are by lottery and in order to qualify, you must have attended at least six other concerts during the season. Because the Last Night is inaccessible to most people, Hyde Park now hosts an open-air concert on the same night with tickets available to the general public. Performance times vary.

The changing of the guard is common in most European capitals, but nowhere is it more famous than in London. The new guard leaves Wellington Barracks a few minutes before the change and marches down Birdcage Walk to Buckingham Palace. The actual ceremony (which lasts around 40 minutes) takes place within the gates of the palace, so get there early to secure a good vantage spot. In addition, the St. James's Palace detachment of the Queen's guard marches to Buckingham Palace at 11:15a and back to St. James's at 12:10p. Free admission. See website for dates scheduled.

The Chinese New Year falls in January or February each year. The large Chinese population of London celebrates its culture with a noisy and bright procession of musicians, lion costumes, dancers and martial artists making their way through the streets from Trafalgar Square. Later, more dancing takes place in Chinatown itself, and food stalls selling delicious Chinese delicacies line the streets. All in all, the atmosphere is fantastic and admission is free.

Owned by Levi Strauss, the stock comes mainly from the denim giant, but features their latest Red Label clothing as well as limited edition and vintage gear. The shop has also commissioned artists to specially customize jeans. The rest of the merchandise is a mix of unusual T-shirts, arty books, records and one-off collectibles. Be sure to check out the art on display in the basement which is a showcase for young artists such as graphic/sleeve artist Andy Votel, best known for his work with Twisted Nerve and Badly Drawn Boy.

If you're in the mood for some farcical Christmas fun, head to Covent Garden for the annual Great Christmas Pudding Race, a staple of London's holiday festivities since 1980. Here you will see hundreds of runners bedecked in fancy holiday garb as they navigate through an obstacle course-- balancing a Christmas pudding as they go! Before and after the race, there is live music and entertainment to keep the energy level high, though at this event it is hard to be anything but full of celebratory cheer. Though the event itself is free to spectators, all proceeds from the race go to benefit the Cancer Research Fund.

The 5th of November commemorates the failure of renegade Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up Parliament for religious motives in 1605. On this chilly night, everyone convenes in various parks throughout London to ooh and ahh at the brilliant fireworks and to keep warm around the bonfire on which an effigy of the historical miscreant is burned. Many parks also have funfairs, food stalls and music. A really enjoyable night no matter where you go, but Battersea Park hosts one of the best parties.

This is one of the country's most popular classical music festivals, held in the beautiful setting of Hampton Court Palace. The festival, held annually, harks back to an era when monarchs living in the Palace had guests, and it certainly feels like you've entered a time warp. The concerts themselves are always fantastic and the atmosphere friendly. Demand for tickets is always high, so be sure to get hold of a program early. Performances have a 75-minute interval, during which members of the audience are free to picnic in the grounds or look around the palace.

The Horse Guards Parade is the second most popular ceremony outside of the Changing of the Guard. In fact, the two mounted cavalry regiments of the Queens Household Regiments, who march in the Changing of the Guard, make up the Horse Guards Parade. The parade commences at 11:30a every day in the summertime, and every other day during the winter. It takes place outside the Horse Guards Building on Whitehall, which was built in 1745 to house the old palace guards. The Horse Guards Building is also the setting for Trooping the Colour.

London is still a global fashion force. Home to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Clements Ribiero and Ronit Zilkha, London leads the pack when it comes to eclectic style. New York may be sleek, Paris classic, Milan chic, and Tokyo super-trendy, but London mixes it all up to great effect. Two annual fashion weeks, sponsored by The British Fashion Council and Vidal Sassoon, bring you the best of the new season's collections. While the Natural History Museum is usually the site of most catwalk shows, many designers are taking their shows to other, hipper venues.

Not surprisingly, this festival attracts some of the best works of its genre, as well as directors and actors who often make appearances at interviews and screenings. One of the most conspicuous recent trends has been the way in which the mainstream has been redefined by what would have once been considered 'queer cinema' and films with mixed casts. The festival always includes surprises and quirky events - this is where the Sound of Music Sing-A-Long was introduced.

One of Britain's biggest motoring spectacles with an estimated one million people lining the route, this June run (not race) heads through central London, Westminster, Lambeth, Thornton Heath, Croydon, Purley, Redhill and Gatwick, before taking B-roads from Crawley to Brighton. Only cars built before 1 January 1905 are eligible. Of course, the ripe old age of many of these veteran cars mean that quite a few don't make it to the finish line. Cars are limited to 20 mph, so it's no wonder that the race starts at 7.30am.

What better relic to epitomise a British childhood than Punch and Judy, that irrepressible puppet duo? On the second Sunday in May, Covent Garden celebrates the craft of puppetry with Punch and Judy acts from all over the country, and also other puppetry acts; some of which push the limits of what can be done with puppets. There is also a processional parade and a unique church service for Punch in St Paul's Church in the morning. The whole event is for a good cause, raising money for the local Community Association. Party in the Park

Festival atmosphere in the city
Exhibition Road
London SW7 2AR
United Kingdom
+44 20 7298 2100
This gargantuan pop-fest takes place on the first Sunday of July every year. It's the festival in London for catching several big name acts on one ticket. The event is sometimes a bit mud-ridden, although the atmosphere is blazing whether the sun joins in or not. The purpose of these gigantically high-profile open-air concerts is to raise money for the Prince's Trust, and usually to great effect. Tickets are usually in very high demand so make sure you get yours in advance.
