Parisian pâtisserie |
28 Greek Street Soho London, London W1D 5DD +44 20 7437 6007 |
Amid the hectic enclave of fickle, trend-setting Soho streets, it seems that some things are here to stay. Maison Bertaux is an unpretentious and authentic little patisserie that holds sway between a strip club and an old pub. A simple interior and rudimentary decor lends it a traditional French charm and paysan appeal, pulling in a cosmopolitan crew of media trendies, ambling tourists and it's a favourite fixture with locals who like to feel continental. The window is impeccably adorned with glorious freshly made gateaux, flans, patisseries and delicate confiseries, and the Maison serves some of the best quiches, croissants and tarts, as well as vegetarian savouries, in London. Service can be a little capricious and hassled at busy times. The Maison Bertaux Theatre Club has taken to organising small plays in the patisserie. This is definitely an experience not to be missed and, as there is very limited space, you should phone ahead to reserve your place. Review © 2009, Wcities |
