Setting the standard in Chinatown |
21 Lisle Street Soho London, London WC2H 7BA +44 20 7437 7341 |
This restaurant has caused a stir amongst critics for innovating a more adventurous approach amid the plentiful cluster of oriental eateries in Chinatown. Mr Kong has made the (set) menu a western parody of Chinese cuisine for western customers, with seasonal delicacies and exotic Cantonese plates remaining un-translated for Chinese clientele. However, some of the more unusual dishes do make the specials menu here, and staff are particularly friendly and accommodating. Do ask and you will reap gastronomic rewards. Authentic Cantonese fare, like a Slow-Cooked Hot Pot of Stewed Sea Cucumber and Fish Lips, Surf Clams with Jellyfish, Pig's Intestine Stuffed with Minced Prawn, or succulent Stewed Lamb Belly are popular with the ever-present Chinese community. All the classics, like Beef Satay and Sweet and Sour Pork are here too. Simple decor and somewhat cosy seating arrangements also contribute to making this a thriving and interesting Chinese drop in.
