Ye Olde Gaye District |
Old Compton Street London W1D 4TN |
Named after the Bishop Henry Compton (1632-1713), Old Compton Street's original claim to fame was as a haven for French refugees back in the 17th and 18th centuries. The area saw the likes of French poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud frequent its pubs. For as long as most can remember, the neighborhood has also cornered the Soho shopping market. Nowadays the street is the centre of London's gay community, hosting the annual Soho Pride festival each summer. Review © 2009, Wcities |
