After Lord's, The Oval so named because of its shape, is probably the most famous test ground in the country. It plays host to Surrey's home matches in all competitions, but more importantly is the venue where England usually play their final home match of the season. The first ever test match on English soil was played here in 1880, when England beat Australia, with the legendary W.G. Grace scoring a hundred on his debut. The ground also gave rise to the "Ashes" trophy, which is played for between England and Australia. This happened in 1882 when England lost terribly against the Aussies. The Sporting Times ran a story next day stating that "the body of English cricket would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia!"
