Could this be the perfect local? Martin Lam cooks up a simple, yet sumptuous, modern British feast - eggs, mussels, duck breast, calves' liver, onion tart and polenta. Main dishes cost between £10 and £16, but it is a small price to pay for such high standards. Wines, here, are particularly outstanding - starting at £12 for the house special. Ransome's Dock is a popular venue for celebrating birthdays and other occasions, but is suitable also for people dining alone at the bar. Lunchtime is great value - the long menu changes regularly so each visit should delight you anew. Make sure you don't leave before trying the superb hot prune and Armagnac soufflé.
