Founded in 1565 by Sir Thomas Gresham, the Exchange was originally touted as a centre of economic commerce. Fortunately, it has not functioned solely in that capacity since 1939, when it ceased being a haven for stock brokers and grew into the oasis of retail materialism that it is today.
