Having long looked to Paris and Milan for inspiration, London is now generally regarded as the design capital of Europe, maybe even the world. So, where better to showcase young, contemporary designers than here? Over 450 companies exhibit, specially selected by a panel of industry experts. Recent exhibitors have included B&B Italia, SCP, Cappellini, Helen Yardley, TwentyTwentyOne and The Igloo, and all genres of modern design are represented. Unfortunately the first few days of the fair are for trade only, with only the final day open to the public.

Buses in London now come in two types: driver-only buses which you board at the front and those with conductors which are boarded at the rear. It's best to have some change ready when boarding a bus, £5 notes are usually okay but many drivers and conductors will balk at anything larger. Bus fares are cheaper than those for the Tube, and are simply 80p for a journey inside of zone 1 (central London) or £1 for a journey outside Zone 1. 'Travelcards' provide unlimited travel on buses, and can be bought at tube stations and most newsagents. You can also get passes which are valid only on buses from the same outlets as sell travelcards, and from tourist centres. UK Senior citizens are entitled to free travel, and children travel at a reduced rate. There is a penalty for being caught without the right ticket. Bus stops are everywhere, and signs indicate which buses will stop at that station. If you are one of the only people waiting, you may want to halt the bus to make sure it stops. Regular bus services end somewhere between 11p and 12.:0a. Night Buses then provide a limited service running between Trafalgar Square and various outlying areas. For details about routes and times ask for the free booklet 'Buses for Night Owls' from the number below. One-day travelcards are not valid on Night Buses, and fares are higher than daytime ones. Stationlink buses (+44 020 7222 1234) stop at every major London train station every hour. Fare is a bit higher than normal buses. For local bus maps, call +44 020 7371 0247.

We're too used to shops looking even better than the clothes they stock, but disregard this long-standing designer boutique's relatively boring interior. A La Mode stocks clothing from all the most popular labels, including Missoni, Edina Ronay, Marni, March Jacobs, Clements Ribeiro, Matthew Williamson, Saltwater, Jemima Khan and Amanda Wakeley. Forget the huge department stores and shop here, where all of your favourite pieces are laid out for you.

Like its fellow French export, Agnes B, APC is all about the basics: clean lines, simple materials and stunning style. The hipster trousers here, for both men and women, are straight and a perfect fit, unless you are petite when a small hem might be required. Some of the coats are a bit military, but that's a question of taste. There's always a small collection of groovy street wear. Of course, there's the range of seemingly disparate accessories, from CDs to olive oil with the common thread being effortless chic. The men's collection has been moved to a shop of its own at 43 All Saints Road, London W11 1HE (+44 20 7221 0884).

If you are visiting the UK for a few days, weeks or even months you have a choice - buy a cheap prepay phone which won't cost you much but will hardly do your street credibility any favours, or you could rent a top of the range handset. Going abroad, prepay won't let you roam - or will at an abominable price. Chiswick-based Adam Phones, one of only 12 Vodafone service providers left in the UK, will sort you out with a Motorola Timeport. You also get accessories, temporary business cards and an information service to call on when you are away. Still not convinced? The Carphone Warehouse, Europe's largest mobile retailer, uses this company to fulfil its hire orders.

A rather conventional part of town for the enfant terrible of the fashion world to base his own shop but, rest assured, that the anti-fashion fashion designer won't be tamed by the respectability of his current base. Full of eccentricity (bones in clothes) and contradiction (the seemingly down-to-earth East End taxi driver's son had liposuction), McQueen is a true fashion innovator known as much for his outlandish designs as his shock tactics on the runway - a man of such prodigious talent that he has already be named British Designer of the Year three times. Even given the dilution necessary to operate a commercial store, his designs are striking and severe with slinky jersey dresses in beige and lemon, molded patent leather pants and skinny dresses all being given his unique touch. Even if you don't intend buying (and very few of you will be able to - McQueen originals do not come cheap) the store is worth checking out for its amazing window displays alone, which, in the past, have featured models posing in simulated snowstorms.

Only a few years ago, Alfred Dunhill had become one of those brands in jeopardy of losing its English appeal. The upscale store epitomised English gentleman style, but it seemed the Japanese and Americans were the only ones wearing its clothes. That's all changed, however, since the line gave itself a modern overhaul (which, by the way, maintains the essence of the old classics). You'll find the selection of ties and cufflinks to be superb, and you won't be disappointed with the personal shopping option either. Visit the Alfred Dunhill Cigar Shop at 27 Jermyn Street for a wonderful selection of cigars and a peek at the largest walk-in humidor in London. You'll find David Linley designs there as well.

This Danish designer makes some of the prettiest, sexiest bustiers in London. Adorned with mesh, satin and sequins, the bustiers are quite covetable and fly off the mannequins and shelves as soon as they arrive. The collection of separates and dresses is slight more demure - expect lots of soft floaty fabrics, beads and sequins in most seasons. And thankfully, most of them look truly unique rather than products from a designer assembly line. The shop's spacious boudoir interior will bring out the inner girlie in you.

Since then, Blumarine has become one of the biggest names in the Italian fashion industry, synonymous with its unique and complete personal casual wear, fragrances, and full compliment of fashion and lifestyle accessories. The shop itself is quite a spectacle, one that rests unashamedly on the fantasy side of tacky. Antiquarius is actually a group of shops organised in a kind of "village" right on King's Road and, contrary to what its name implies, you won't find only antiques here. The green awning and characteristic facade are noteworthy and once inside there is a diverse selection of wares to choose from. You can find lingerie, inexpensive casual wear, vintage suits, Asian-inspired home accessories, collectibles (including a comprehensive selection of old movie posters) and antiques all under one roof. Prices are generally reasonable, but don't expect to come away with an armful of bargains.

More an art installation than a clothing shop, this duo's "Factory of Lights and Experiment" in a former Victorian electrical workshop houses the signature air-sealed T-shirts and accessories. Antoni & Alison embrace the fun side of fashion, and are great for finding one off pieces that will liven up any outfit. Their fabulous photo print bags are always worth a browse, and they also have a line of Brit. memorabilia, like designer punk jumpers. The clothes are essentially designer street wear - tops with I'm going mad printed on them and the like. If that's not your thing, you should still visit this quirky illuminated store for its decorations alone.

Based on elegant tailoring and classic British styles, injected with more contemporary urban shapes and relaxed rural echoes, it is a mainstay of "Home Counties" conservative fashion. Renowned for raincoats and tweed jackets, it also produces smart suits and sophisticated evening wear, complemented by Aquascutum's traditional Club Check briefcases and bags. Japanese food is now firmly established in the Western world as an haute and healthy cuisine, so it's no surprise that this Soho Japanese supermarket is extremely popular with both Japanese residents and London foodies hoping to find some seaweed for their sushi party. Very comprehensive and very central (this part of Brewer Street, known as Little Tokyo, is home to many authentic noodle and sushi bars), it stocks all the essential ingredients: nori, tofu, soy sauce, dried noodles, Japanese beers and saké, as well as fresh yakitori, onigri, and pre-packed bento boxes. Sampling some made to order sushi or sashimi at the small eatery is an added treat.

One of the finest English jewellers ever (actually owned by the Sultan of Brunei), Asprey & Garrard's have been royal jewellers since 1735 when Garrard founder George Wickes was appointed Royal Goldsmith by Frederick, Prince of Wales. It's a patronage that continues to the present day with the company holding Royal Warrants from the Queen, The Queen Mother and Prince Charles. Recently they were given the responsibility for making the diamond ring on the occasion of Prince Edward's engagement to Sophie Rhys-Jones. They will of course serve lesser mortals, but unless you earn a six-figure salary, forget it - luxury costs. Everything opulent is here, from a sterling silver computer mouse with accompanying red leather heart-shaped mouse mat, to sterling silver goblets and engagement rings with Asprey's signature setting.

Bank Services

Wide Range
Throughout the city
London, London
United Kingdom
Bank branches are generally open 9a to 4:30p or 5p Monday-Friday. Some are open on Saturdays, but all are shut on Sundays and bank holidays. Bureaux de Change: Most branches of high-street banks have bureau de change facilities which buy and sell currency for a fee. If you want a foreign currency, it is usually a good idea to order it over the phone or in person in advance of when you are going to need it, although most banks hold a stock of the most popular tourist currencies. Rates of exchange are usually on display. Some travel agents also offer currency exchange, though their fees tend to be higher. The bureau de change kiosks you will see in the West End of London are aimed at tourists and their rates are very poor. Nearly all banks have cashpoint facilities (ATMs) which can be accessed 24 hours a day. The vast majorities of shops, hotels and restaurants take the full range of credit and debit cards, and have the symbols of those they accept displayed in their windows.

Most of the clothes maintain a youthful zest and a teenage edge, but great deals on essential and fashion-obeying basics like jeans and T-shirts give it a wider appeal as well.

Putney
London, London SW15 1SL
United Kingdom
+44 20 8789 0518
Located just across the River Thames from Putney Bridge tube station, Beggar's Banquet is a specialist music shop that sells CDs and vinyls, bags, T-shirts and music magazines which you can browse through while the heavy basslines pump out in the background. Music of all kinds is on offer here, and their stock can probably be best defined as "everything but chart music", as no one genre is particularly favoured over any others so it's a good place to go if you're fed up with the churned out chart fare. Staff are friendly so be sure to ask if you can't find what you're looking for.

Down to earth designer

United Kingdom
+44 20 7730 2994
http://www.bendelisi.com/
This American designer splashed onto the scene a few years back with his ultra-womanly column dresses - long, off-the-shoulder numbers that were sexy and classic. Untainted by success (de Lisi does his own PR) and aware of trends (he can often be spotted around the Brompton Cross and King's Road area), de Lisi also designs a line for Debenhams. Things to expect out of this little shop are beautiful fabrics like cashmere and taffeta in simple colours with sophisticated designs.

Ben and Hugo Warner founded 'benugo' and it is quite clear that the name of the restaurant is an amalgamation of the founders' names. The sandwiches and salads served at this place are prepared using fresh ingredients and the meat, seafood and even olive oil are imported. The cooling juices too come from freshly picked fruit that are delivered to the restaurant each morning. And if you feel you haven't had enough, then the deli sections allow you to take home salad dressings, coffee and tea.

Bermondsey (New Caledonian)  Market

Get up early for a bargain
Long Lane and Bermondsey Street
Bermondsey Square
London, London SE1 4QB
United Kingdom
+44 171 351 5353
The ungodly hours and the inconvenient day of the largest antiques market in London mean a more authentic experience. But watch out, because since 1949, this market has had a reputation of selling dodgy goods - but then you should be wary at any market really. Wake up early and you'll also experience a different side of London life, as many stalls close early - although that is quickly changing as the market attracts more visitors. Most of the traders here are full-time dealers and know their antiques, so if you're as knowledgeable you'll be able to separate the trinkets from the treasure.

Betsey is the kind of eccentric middle-aged woman who you'd hate to have for a mother - if she weren't a top designer with a knack for original dresses that also manage to be sexy and gorgeous. Her colourful, eclectic and outrageous little boudoir doesn't really seem out of place with the Sloane-chic stores of Brompton Cross - after all, spoilt Beverley Hills and Manhattan teenagers swear by her dresses, and who can resist that combination of youth, wealth, beauty and originality? Expect loads of ruffles, velvets, tulles and mad prints from a favourite New York designer you'd probably love to have as an embarrassing mother.

Forget yoga! Pilates (pronounced pill-are-tes) is the miracle exercise, according to its growing number of followers. A relatively new discipline developed in the early 20th century, it became popular with dancers and athletes in rehabilitation. Actors and singers also found the slow, thorough stretching and breathing exercises beneficial to their posture. Anyone can take pilates, young or old, athletic or couch potato - while the exercises are gentle, they will make you aware of muscles you never knew you had and over time contribute to a flat stomach and straight posture. Private studios have mushroomed around the city, but classes are still extremely popular, and this South Kensington branch is regularly booked up. Call for a list of approved pilates teachers and other information.

Bond Street

Designer chic
Bond Street
London, London W5 5AA
United Kingdom
Named after Sir Thomas Bond, the financial controller of the Queen's Household at the court of King Charles I in the 17th century, the Bond Street area was swampy, uninhabited and near a plague pit - an unsavory area where highwaymen preyed on passers-by and noblemen fought duels. By the 1850s, however, Bond Street had undergone something of a renaissance and become a place lined with fashionable shops, where members of high society would stroll the streets. And it has remained so, although tourists and shop-a-holics are its main visitors now. Nonetheless, Bond Street still has many traders who display the Royal Warrant and maintain a tradition of individual service, with many leading fashion houses where made-to-measure garments can be purchased. For lovers of art, high fashion and elegant clothes, jewelery and leather goods, there is no equal to Bond Street. Acquisitions and changes have enhanced its reputation further over the years with key fashion houses - such as Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton - opening shops.
