You'll think you've stepped into an archaeological dig - however unlikely that is in Kensal Green. The owner, Dale Rogers has sourced incredible fossils from Madagascar, Morocco and even from the UK. He sells Moroccan lamps, ceramics, wooden sculptures, wrought iron candlesticks and large wooden framed mirrors. Buying an artefact here for your home will give it that exotic, well-travelled, adventure-story touch. Buddha heads are in abundance and so are ceremonial masks from East Timor. This is an incredible, tiny shop, which has about eight tons of fossils on sale. Find a gift here for a housewarming party, or an original birthday present. Call to arrange a visit outside shop hours.

Antiquarius is actually a group of shops organised in a kind of "village" right on King's Road and, contrary to what its name implies, you won't find only antiques here. The green awning and characteristic facade are noteworthy and once inside there is a diverse selection of wares to choose from. You can find lingerie, inexpensive casual wear, vintage suits, Asian-inspired home accessories, collectibles (including a comprehensive selection of old movie posters) and antiques all under one roof. Prices are generally reasonable, but don't expect to come away with an armful of bargains.

Bermondsey (New Caledonian)  Market

Get up early for a bargain
Long Lane and Bermondsey Street
Bermondsey Square
London, London SE1 4QB
United Kingdom
+44 171 351 5353
The ungodly hours and the inconvenient day of the largest antiques market in London mean a more authentic experience. But watch out, because since 1949, this market has had a reputation of selling dodgy goods - but then you should be wary at any market really. Wake up early and you'll also experience a different side of London life, as many stalls close early - although that is quickly changing as the market attracts more visitors. Most of the traders here are full-time dealers and know their antiques, so if you're as knowledgeable you'll be able to separate the trinkets from the treasure.

Camden Passage is, after Portobello Road Market, London's best antiques market, with stalls jammed full of antiques, rarities and books. Completely separate from Camden Market, you'll find the Georgian Village arcade with silver, toys and jewelery, at the northern end. The southern end is The Mall, which is really rather glamorous with its fine art and prints. Most of the shops along Camden Passage also specialize in various types of antique furniture, textiles and art. Thursdays are given over to a small book market; the selection of cheap paperbacks is excellent. The Farmers' Market runs on Sundays, and offers locally grown organic foods.

David Brower Antiques deals in KPM, Meissen, English and Continental porcelain, as well as European bronzes, Oriental porcelain and Japanese works of art. Pieces range from gorgeous painted silk screens to elaborate porcelain vases. Its refreshing to find an antiques store on Kensington Church Street that doesn't specialise in just one type of antique, and the shop also lacks the pretentious aspect that some of its neighbours have acquired.

In her shop, you'll find 19th century antiques and some older pieces as well as accessories and gifts in every nook and cranny. Don't settle for shoddily imitated chests when you can be the owner of gorgeous, genuine pieces, including the ubiquitous leather trunks and red armoires. "From its 1744 origins as a book dealer to its 21st Century incarnation as one of the world's most famous auction houses - along with Christie's - Sotheby's has always been a synonym for prestige, quality and expertise. Although recent sales have included a Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil, Russian space capsules and a 60-year-old piece of wedding cake, Sotheby's attentions are still largely focused on more traditional auction fare, such as works of art, jewellery and - yes - books. But don't get too excited with artist Edouard Manet's impressionist painting Jeune Fille Dans un Jardin, selling for over $20 million, you'll really need to save those pennies. The gallery hosts some fabulous larger pieces including a 150 year-old ladder used by the Dogan clift-dwellers of Malawi and a helmet mask from Zaire. If you want to adorn yourself rather than your home, try on some of the cowrie shell and silver jewellery on display. And even some of the bigger items have fashionable uses. A Vogue model purchased a hefty Cameroonian headdress with black feathers to use on her wedding day.

Waterhouse and Dodd are dealers in fine British and Continental paintings from 1850-1940. They specialise impressionist and post-impressionist artists, such as Paul Deltomb and Lucien Adrion, but feature works from all genres of 19th and 20th century painting. They also endeavour to deal in paintings that offer affordable excellence and guaranteed authenticity, rather than big-name works, and are experienced in dealing and shipping for international clients. They also exhibit at various art fairs around the UK, including the annual antiques fair at the Olympia exhibition centre in London. If you're interested in making a purchase you can either pop down and see them, or browse through their complete collection on-line, which is updated every two weeks.

Wembley Sunday Market

When Sunday comes
Stadium Way
Wembley
London, Middlesex HA9
United Kingdom
Every Sunday, rain or shine, this market is crawling with people ready to browse through more than five hundred stalls. Clothes, appliances, tools, carpets, accessories and food - although not exactly quality stuff - provide a great bargain hunt. Because this is a major stadium, be ready to walk if you don't want to pay for parking in the car park.
