Hats fit for a princess

Clapham
London, London SW8 3RG
United Kingdom

This boutique is the kind of place that, as a child, you can't wait to frequent when you are all grown up. The romantic decor of this milliner features elegant furniture and antique mirrors, beautifully complementing her feminine creations. If you are tall, opt for a wide-brimmed straw hat; if not, choose from a variety of oh-so-pretty creations, including tiaras. Be sure to call first, because like many speciality boutiques, hours can be erratic, and entrance is by appointment only.

London Float Centre

Float your sorrows and your stress away
7 Clapham Common Southside
Clapham
London, London SW4 7AA

If you don't know what a flotation tank is, think of it as a big bathtub. Due to the high percentage of salts and minerals in the water, your body just floats. The water is filtered after each visit, and the dark rooms are calming, not claustrophobic. So slip into your bathing suit, get in and float for around an hour. You'll be so relaxed that when you come to, you'll be flabbergasted to see that your time is up. An hour here is equivalent to about four hours of sleep. After a session, you may experience some psychological and physical release; for example, you may feel twitchy or just extremely mellow. Discounts available for multiple-floats, and apparently the optimum number is three.

New Covent Garden Market

This market is serious: they only sell wholesale here, but if you want to see Britain's main distribution point of fruit, vegetables and flowers in action come here! You'll have to wake up early though - the scents at the flower market are amazing and for some, totally worth red-rimmed eyes.

You have probably seen these hop-on, hop-off open air, double-decker buses zooming around London. Now celebrating 50 years of toting tourists around the capital, you can jump on and off the tour whenever you see something you'd like to explore further. Lasting approximately two hours, the tours are a great introduction to the city. The majority of the tours are offered in several languages - some offer live commentary, while others are pre-recorded. On sunny days, you can get a great tan from the top of the bus, but watch out for London's temperamental weather. Call for information on stops and the different tours.

London tour buses

This London sightseeing tour used to be run by London Pride, but so popular is their Original Tour that they've changed their name. The complete tour covers all popular sights - i.e. Buckingham Palace, the Natural History Museum, Parliament etc., and includes a free walking and boat tour. This company does offer the advantage of being able to join part of a tour without having to pay for the whole lot - fares range from 80p upwards. There are over 90 stops at which you can join, and buses are very frequent (every six minutes in summer), though do call to check details of bus stops and times.

Sainsbury's

Where good food costs less!
33 Clapham High Street
Clapham
London, London SW4 7TP
United Kingdom

Sainsbury is a popular and large empire, and this branch is popular with both the international South Kensington community and the young Earl's Court contingent. With supermarkets all over the country, it is fitting that they often use celebrities to promote their chain. John Cleese and Jane Asher are just two who have publicly given this store their seal of approval. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us, so stock up your fridges, freezers and cupboards with food and wine from Sainsbury 'where good food costs less'. Whatever you want you should be able to find it here. Call 0800 636 262 for details of your nearest branch.

Selectors Music Emporium

A classic hit
100B Brixton Hill
Brixton
London, London SW2 1AH
United Kingdom

This small shop just out of Brixton, up the hill and on the way to Streatham, has a loyal following despite being a relatively new addition to the area. Spread over two floors, Selector offers all types of music including soul, jazz, reggae, rap, and rare-groove, both on CD and (especially) on vinyl. The staff know their stuff, making this one a real gem. Selectors also has a mail order facility and sells tickets for parties, concerts and festivals.
