Thank you for Japanese food |
48-50 Brewer Street London, London W1F 9TG United Kingdom +44 20 7287 1722 |
Japanese food is now firmly established in the Western world as an haute and healthy cuisine, so it's no surprise that this Soho Japanese supermarket is extremely popular with both Japanese residents and London foodies hoping to find some seaweed for their sushi party. Very comprehensive and very central (this part of Brewer Street, known as Little Tokyo, is home to many authentic noodle and sushi bars), it stocks all the essential ingredients: nori, tofu, soy sauce, dried noodles, Japanese beers and saké, as well as fresh yakitori, onigri, and pre-packed bento boxes. Sampling some made to order sushi or sashimi at the small eatery is an added treat. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Scary bookshop |
49a Museum Street Bloomsbury London, London WC1A 1LY United Kingdom +44 20 7405 2120 |
Founded in 1922 by Michael Houghton, an Eastern European refugee, as an occult book shop, he also ran an occult lodge (ominously called The Order of the Hidden Masters) and one of the first occult correspondence course from these premises, while the infamous Alistair Crowley was a patron. The collection of works includes such titles as Pan, Great God of Nature andThe Goat Foot God. Still want to venture in? Well then you're either a braver soul than most, or a horny-handed servant of Lucifer. Whichever, you won't disappointed - the store has a massive collection of works on subjects ranging from paganism to ufology and the Gnostics. You have been warned. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Academic booksellers |

This is the London flagship store of Oxford's academic booksellers. Situated near the heart of the business and legal district and not far from the London university colleges, Blackwell's offers the latest books on law, finance, economics and management. Being a major bookstore, they should be able to order any business/law titles they don't have on their shelves. It also stocks a comprehensive selection of general titles. Other branches are in most university neighbourhoods nationwide, but if you can't find one, their online service offers free postage for deliveries in the UK. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Certainly, the old adage "don't judge a book by its cover" should apply to this charming yet unassuming second-hand bookshop near the Notting Hill Gate tube. Shelves are lined with new releases, best sellers, and timeless classics sold for half their original price. Hard-to-finds, old magazines and comic books are also very much a part of the scene. Easily one of the best-used bookstores in W11. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cheap reads |
72-74 Notting Hill Gate Notting Hill London, London W11 3HT United Kingdom +44 20 7727 4149 |
Go to The Book Warehouse to brush up on your knowledge of art. The cheap Taschen art books are good for learning more about every artist from Van Gogh to Edward Hopper. Don't just browse, they really are worth buying and The Book Warehouse usually has a better selection than most high street bookshops. Design, photography and architecture books, many of them of coffee table quality, are also on the shelves. There is also a great selection of fiction and non-fiction paperbacks and hardbacks, though some of the odder titles will make you wonder how these books got published in the first place. Just in case you need to clean up your life, relationship or psyche, there is a generous offering of self-help titles. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This modern chain store is good for all types of fiction, little novelty books and cards. Larger stores, such as this one, have coffee shops, CDs and specialist books. The really great thing about Books Etc. though is that they don't mind you reading the books before you buy - in fact, they even put chairs around the store so you can sit and read, which is by far the most comfortable way to shop. A free gift-wrap service, mail order, postal delivery and export scheme are also available at one of the friendliest chains around. Branches everywhere, from the high street to airports. Stacked with books on anything from 'Old Polish Culinary Traditions' to 'Two Fat Ladies', this shop is guaranteed to leave you salivating. Pick up their seasonal newsletter which lists cookery classes taught by famous chefs. The classes are wonderful and you get to sample each perfectly cooked dish before washing everything down with a glass of Corney & Barrow wine. It is definitely worth taking a morning off work for this. If that is impossible, they have a few Saturday afternoon classes and summer courses in Tuscany. Book (by post, email or fax only) immediately though, since the places go like hot cakes as there's only room for a maximum of twenty. The bookstore that knows no bounds... |
203-207 Oxford Street London, London W1D 2LE United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7292 1600 http://www.bordersstores.com/ |
Stocking almost a quarter of a million books, music and video titles, plus one of the largest magazine selections in the UK, this American import has become a leading light in book and music retail. Despite the vast inventory, the uncluttered approach gives it a loftily light appeal, allowing you to leisurely browse through shelves stocked with "everything from African poetry to Zoroastrian theology" or seek help from the friendly and informed staff. Afterwards you can flake out in the second-floor cafe, leaf through your latest buy with a cappuccino, or muse through the floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of Oxford Street. At weekends, the store holds special events for children. Both Borders stores in London schedule in-store appearances and talks by authors, musicians and artists. Check with the store for individual programs. The new London branch can be found at 120 Charing Cross Road, just a 15 minute walk away, with a similarly impressive stock and another sublime Borders Cafe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Upper Street Islington London, London N1 United Kingdom +44 20 7359 0190 http://www.camdenpassageantiqu... |
Camden Passage is, after Portobello Road Market, London's best antiques market, with stalls jammed full of antiques, rarities and books. Completely separate from Camden Market, you'll find the Georgian Village arcade with silver, toys and jewelery, at the northern end. The southern end is The Mall, which is really rather glamorous with its fine art and prints. Most of the shops along Camden Passage also specialize in various types of antique furniture, textiles and art. Thursdays are given over to a small book market; the selection of cheap paperbacks is excellent. The Farmers' Market runs on Sundays, and offers locally grown organic foods. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The shop has also commissioned artists to specially customize jeans. The rest of the merchandise is a mix of unusual T-shirts, arty books, records and one-off collectibles. Not for those used to the faceless efficiency of superstores or amazon.com., Foyles is, nevertheless, quite charming. There are excellent opportunities for leisurely browsing through its huge stock. It has also become much more organised in recent years, and the company has even gone so far as to modernise the logo and do away with its famously complicated system for buying books, which people admired until they actually wanted to buy something. The layout is still pretty haphazard, though: you may have to spend a while wandering round its many floors before finding what you're looking for. But, as long as you've got the time, that's part of the pleasure of Foyles. Famous for their literary lunches and now organising evening events (for a minimal charge) with the likes of Will Self, it's well worth dropping by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Never knowingly undersold |

John Lewis prides itself on being 'never knowingly undersold'. In fact it is a last remaining bastion of a reassuringly good value and quality shopping experience. The tastefully understated store is a godsend for all life's essentials, being amply stocked in all departments which are manned by knowledgeable and obliging staff. After-sales service is also top-notch. The four floors cover everything from fabrics to furniture, electricals to evening wear and bridal lists to books. Of particular note is the underrated electronics department, stocking an extensive range of computers, phones, faxes, TVs, video and audio equipment, all offered with sound advice, solid guarantees, and competitive prices. The own-brand fashion designs are perhaps more practical than cutting edge, but there is a worthy collection of childrenswear including school uniforms. John Lewis excels in home furnishings, with enough scope to refurbish and accessorise your entire house with made-to-order and made-to-last designs. Haberdashery and fabrics also come highly commended and the store provides an impressive array of services including free wedding lists, lingerie fittings, furnishing advisory service, and deliveries. A fabulous little shop where alternative culture rules. New and secondhand books, 'zines, records, magazines and clothing (mainly T-shirts) are stocked, and although you'll want lots of what you see, it's not expensive. The clothing tends to be of the variety that your parents dreaded you wearing when you were 15 - it's either revealing or has rude words on it. Fanzine titles include The Chap, Cheap Date and Artbabe. There are occasional exhibitions of weird and wonderful art, and it's a great place to pick up flyers for underground clubs, gigs and shops. Glamour is the word |
Regent Street Soho London, London W1B 5AH United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7734 1234 http://www.liberty.co.uk |
Liberty used to be a haven for a sophisticated English clientèle, as well as tourists and those on the hunt for exquisite fabrics for dressmaking. It has however transformed into a hotspot for designer wear and cosmetics. The building itself is of significant historical beauty with its striking mock-Tudor facade and a splendid galleried oak staircase inside. The arts book section is accompanied by a snug cafe serving tremendously fattening cakes. Antiques, a bridal section and home ware can be found in the basement, contemporary jewelery and Liberty specialty accessories are at ground level, and there are laudable sections for cosmetics, gifts and designer fashion labels for both men and women. In recent years, Liberty has become quite a mecca for up-and-coming as well as more creative designers, including Kostas Murkurdis, Martine Sitbon and Issy Miyake. The fabrics and textiles department remains second to none and the excellent home furnishings and crafts are strikingly varied. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Murder One is rather a mixed bookshop. While it bills itself as Europe's largest crime and mystery book stockist, it also sells science fiction, fantasy and romance. It may sounds a strange combination, but as it's been going strong for over 10 years it must be getting something right. In keeping with the name, there's an impressive range of second-hand and out-of-print titles for the whodunit connoisseur. You can also be assured that most new crime books will get here quickly - when Thomas Harriss Hannibal came out, Murder One was the first place it was sold in London. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and, if you can't find what you're looking for, they'll have a damn good try for you. The servings, and the nature of Polish cuisine, are such that you are unlikely to leave hungry. There are dining facilities that range from smaller cafes and snack bars to renowned eatery The People's Palace. Aside from the concerts themselves, the Royal Festival Hall often has several small photographic or contemporary art exhibitions on the go. They're often unpublicized, but if you happen to be on the South Bank, it's worth popping in to the hall to see if anything interesting is on show. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Visualization of deities is an essential part of Buddhist meditation. Which is why the Tibet Shop only sells high quality statues and thangkas - Buddhist paintings - and avoids cheap tourist creations that have many errors compared to the original texts. Because of the political situation, making Buddhist artworks is illegal in Tibet, so all of their statues and paintings are handmade by Tibetan, Bhutanese and Nepalese artists in exile in Nepal. They also sell jewelry, clothing, meditation tapes and incense to help up the spirituality quota of your loft apartment. Donations to the Free Tibet campaign and for Buddhist activities at the Dharma Centre in Finland are welcomed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Miniature department store for pretty piglets |
34 Kings Road Chelsea London, London SW3 4UD United Kingdom +44 20 7259 9620 http://www.trotters.co.uk/ |
Rather like a smaller version of Daisy & Tom, this store offers books, games, clothing, shoes and a hairdressers, all of which are aimed at 0-11 year olds. The clothing is good old practical stuff - you won't find any miniature leather trousers here, though the odd Ralph Lauren or Kenzo outfit can be found. Kids will find the book and toy corner appealing, giving you some time to peruse the collections. Although there's no mail order service, you can supplement purchases by ordering from the web site. 203-206 Piccadilly London, London SW1Y 6WW United Kingdom +44 20 7851 2400 http://www.waterstones.co.uk/ |
Why go crawling from bookstore to bookstore when that elusive title, along with almost any other book you might desire, is most likely to be here? With seven floors containing over 265,000 titles and 1.5 million books, there's plenty to browse through. But you may not have time - what with the Red Room restaurant, Studio Lounge Bar, juice bar, arts space and events area, you'll find yourself staying for the whole day. The Studio Lounge Bar is particularly worth a visit and is the perfect place to linger with a coffee and a magazine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

New age stuff |
283 Kings Road London SW3 5EW United Kingdom +44 20 7352 9531 http://www.wildeones.com/ |
This little shop crammed with all sorts of mystic trinkets resembles a Venice Beach, beach-side vendor. Books, CD's, candles, incense, jewellery and essential oils are all available here. In the back, you can visit a fortune-teller, tarot-card reader or palm reader in a tiny make-shift room. The American tarot-card reader is completely off the mark, but we've heard positive reports from the various other psychics. Good fun this side of Camden Town. Review © 2007, Wcities |
