If you are visiting the UK for a few days, weeks or even months you have a choice - buy a cheap prepay phone which won't cost you much but will hardly do your street credibility any favours, or you could rent a top of the range handset. Going abroad, prepay won't let you roam - or will at an abominable price. Chiswick-based Adam Phones, one of only 12 Vodafone service providers left in the UK, will sort you out with a Motorola Timeport. You also get accessories, temporary business cards and an information service to call on when you are away. Still not convinced? The Carphone Warehouse, Europe's largest mobile retailer, uses this company to fulfil its hire orders.

London, London W1S 4SD
United Kingdom
+44 20 7495 1920
It may be a tiny shop nestled away in an arcade off New Bond Street, but Angela Hale is the ultimate in costume vintage jewellery. Featured in Vogue and Elle, her collections have become quite the thing for fashionable Londoners and celebrities to don. And its easy to see why - art-deco and Victorian inspired necklaces, bracelets, earrings and hair accessories are all just charming, and the vintage bags will liven up any little black dress. The kind of jewellery you wish you your grandmother had amassed in the 1920s.

It seems as though the familiar catalogue of Argos, which (seemingly) contains just about everything you could ever want, has been around forever. For those unfamiliar with the concept, the drill goes pick that blender, answering machine, stereo or anything else you want from the extensive catalogue, in-store. Record the item information, check if the stock is available on a coloured calculator-type device and take it up to the counter, where you can pick up your goods if available. Prices are generally reasonable, and all goods can now be ordered online. But Argos services do not end there. Ring and reserve, home shopping, wedding list, and interest free credit are amongst the multitude of services available. Branches are everywhere - check online or in your phone directory for your closest.

London, London SW6 4LY

The Auditorium is a stockist of high quality (in both aesthetic and manufacturing terms) audio and video systems - it's sort of the next step down in audio-visuals from Bang & Olufsen. A speciality is the design of integrated sound systems, for example multi-room systems, or those that involve hidden speakers, touch-screens or plasma screens. The Loewe brand is on prominent display here, as is Teac. For those in search of an integrated, upmarket sound system that requires an experienced hand in design and installation, The Auditorium could be the place you are looking for.

This busy London airport has two terminals and great transport links into the centre of London. Quite futuristic in design, both terminals have bureaux de change, ATMs, shops, duty-free outlets, restaurants and bars. The South Terminal also has a post office and an adjacent medical centre that offers vaccinations. The Internet Exchange Internet cafe in the International Departures lounge is a good place to while away some time playing computer games, sending emails or receiving computer training. Gatwick has great rail links to much of the country, and central London is only 30 minutes away on the Gatwick Express. For National Rail enquires call +44 (0)845 748 4950. Luxury Everywhere
Bassingbourne Road, Uttlesford, Essex
Enterprise House
London, Essex CM24 1QW
United Kingdom
+44 870 000 0303
http://www.baa.com
Situated 48km northwest of central London, Stansted is the airport of choice for the surfeit of low-budget airlines that run to Europe, although it also serves destinations worldwide. This can mean the departure hall is overrun with customers queuing to check in, and it's always worth getting there with plenty of time to spare. With both arrivals and departures in one building, it's nothing like the size of Heathrow and Gatwick, although it still has a reasonable array of shops and eateries, especially since the completion of the departure lounge extension at the end of 2001. There is a dedicated pick up area in Zone D of the short-stay car park where customers can wait for free for 10 minutes. Stansted has short, medium and long-stay car parks. The short-stay parking is very close to the terminal building while the long-stay parking is a short bus ride away and the medium-stay parking is in the middle. The airport runs regular shuttle buses between the long-stay car parks and the terminal although travellers should add an extra 30 minutes to their journey to account for this. Pre-book on the website for parking discounts and details on the AirportsPLUS VIP service - a priority reserved car parking facility. The airport railway station and ticket office is below the terminal building. All trains have facilities for special needs passengers but note that you cannot take bikes on the Stansted Express, although they can be taken on the local train service into London. Trains run from 5a-11p every day. Buses run from the terminal forecourt and serve London and the rest of the country. For taxis, Stansted Airport Cars have a desk on the international arrivals concourse. Call +44 1279 662444 to prebook. Wheelchair accessible cars are available on request. There's a wide variety of snack bars and restaurants from coffee houses to seafood restaurants. Standsted has tried to ensure high standards by bringing Egon Ronay and his team of restaurant inspectors on board and it's worth looking out for the units that have Egon Ronay ratings. Restaurants and bars that belong to national chains have been price-fixed in line with high street prices so you should not pay a penny more than you would on the UK high street. There can be long queuing times for check-in and you need to allow time for getting to and from the long-stay car park. If you want your journey to go really smoothly, it's worth investigating the AirportsPLUS VIP service which includes fast track security clearance, entry to the VIP lounge, commission-free currency and special shopping and eating offers. Air 2000, Air Malta, Air Stord, Aurigny Air Services, British Airways, Cyprus Airways, Czech Airlines, El Al Israel Airlines, Intourtrans, KLM UK, KLM exel, KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines, Kibris Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair, Northwest Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair, bmi british midland are all the possile airlines served.

Although it is named the RS Hispaniola, there is little Spanish influence aboard this boat cum restaurant. In fact, the food tends to be French-influenced making an evening here better than the average Channel crossing. The service is naturally ship-shape, and the Hispaniola offers a great three-course set lunch. All in all, the dining experience here is more for novelty value and good views. The RS Hispaniola can be hired out for corporate functions and entertainment in the form of magicians, musicians or belly dancers.

This British theatre was originally built to be the home of Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy Operas, and was restored to its original art deco form in 1993 after the auditorium and roof were destroyed by fire. The theatre usually shows plays of the British persuasion (e.g. Noel Coward's Hay Fever and a musical version of Hardy's Tess of the D'Ubervilles) but at Christmas it often hosts a variety of children's shows. The auditorium holds just over 1,100 people, including seats for wheelchairs in the dress circle, and it can also be hired for conference purposes.

Ayurveda is an alternative therapy which originated in India, but is fast becoming popular in the West. That's exactly why the Shymala Ayurveda Spa in Kensington is a hot cake. All the treatments are custom-made and the needs and constitution of the clients are kept in mind before designing them. Don't expect the usual frilly atmosphere; this place is more about quality and results than petals and scented candles. But at the end of it all, you will definitely feel like a princess—sans the crown, of course!

London, London W8 4SG

Part of Richard Bransons Virgin empire, V Shop is the re-engineered version of Our Price. Rather than having rows of plain old CDs and tapes, V Store devotes most of its space to the latest Virgin mobile phones, which you can pick up and use before you buy. The store has a snazzy interior, but its a shame that the selection of music available to buy then and there is so small you can, however, order just about any title via small computer terminals in the shop. One advantage of V Shop is that it stays open a bit later than most stores, so its good for after-work browsing.
