We're too used to shops looking even better than the clothes they stock, but disregard this long-standing designer boutique's relatively boring interior. A La Mode stocks clothing from all the most popular labels, including Missoni, Edina Ronay, Marni, March Jacobs, Clements Ribeiro, Matthew Williamson, Saltwater, Jemima Khan and Amanda Wakeley. Forget the huge department stores and shop here, where all of your favourite pieces are laid out for you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The name Agatha does so conjure up images of glamorous grand-aunts, doesn't it? Situated on the uber-chic South Molton street, this French costume jeweller built its reputation on rather conspicuous designs, like huge charm bracelets and dangly necklaces, but has steadily expanded its line to offer sleek and understated items as well as showy ones. Stop here if you need inexpensive and stylish accessories for either that little black dress or those hard-to-wear shoes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The one and only |
4-5 Old Bond Street London, London W1S 4PD United Kingdom +44 20 7355 0088 http://www.alexandermcqueen.com/ |
A rather conventional part of town for the enfant terrible of the fashion world to base his own shop but, rest assured, that the anti-fashion fashion designer won't be tamed by the respectability of his current base. Full of eccentricity (bones in clothes) and contradiction (the seemingly down-to-earth East End taxi driver's son had liposuction), McQueen is a true fashion innovator known as much for his outlandish designs as his shock tactics on the runway - a man of such prodigious talent that he has already be named British Designer of the Year three times. Even given the dilution necessary to operate a commercial store, his designs are striking and severe with slinky jersey dresses in beige and lemon, molded patent leather pants and skinny dresses all being given his unique touch. Even if you don't intend buying (and very few of you will be able to - McQueen originals do not come cheap) the store is worth checking out for its amazing window displays alone, which, in the past, have featured models posing in simulated snowstorms. 48 Jermyn Street London, London SW1Y 6DL United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7290 8600 http://www.dunhill.com/ |
Only a few years ago, Alfred Dunhill had become one of those brands in jeopardy of losing its English appeal. The upscale store epitomised English gentleman style, but it seemed the Japanese and Americans were the only ones wearing its clothes. That's all changed, however, since the line gave itself a modern overhaul (which, by the way, maintains the essence of the old classics). You'll find the selection of ties and cufflinks to be superb, and you won't be disappointed with the personal shopping option either. Visit the Alfred Dunhill Cigar Shop at 27 Jermyn Street for a wonderful selection of cigars and a peek at the largest walk-in humidor in London. You'll find David Linley designs there as well. In addition they also host a number of shows throughout the year, including the New York ceramics fair and the International Fine Art and Antiques fair. This world of retro gadgetry, fashion and home accessories takes a look back at the American Dream with a 21st-century wink. It's a funky shopping experience presenting the original tomato-ketchup dispenser and purple chilli pepper tree lights, colourful kitchenware by Alessi, art and design books, and tacky toy town treats. In terms of retro wear, the shop still carries some classic vintage pieces, accompanied by own-brand and designer threads and accessories from the likes of Kangol, Helmut Lang, and Winky and Dutch. It may be a tiny shop nestled away in an arcade off New Bond Street, but Angela Hale is the ultimate in costume vintage jewellery. Featured in Vogue and Elle, her collections have become quite the thing for fashionable Londoners and celebrities to don. Nestled amongst countless other sex shops in Soho is the glossy 'high-street' version by Ann Summers. As far as sex stores go, this well-known British chain is certainly the most accepted and it's often viewed with a saucy sense of humour. The lingerie and accessories, including PVC outfits and lurid laces, or patent leather spike heels and dog collars, are popular with both sexes although some of the sex toys may offend those of a more delicate disposition. All sizes are catered for at throwaway prices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Indulge your femininity |
11A Old Bond Street Mayfair London, London W1S 4PJ United Kingdom +44 20 7493 4872 |
The ultimate in girly, sexy designer clothes, Anna Molinari started the Blumarine label (a reference to the crystal blue waters of her native Capri, Italy) with her husband in 1977 as a knitwear company. Since then, Blumarine has become one of the biggest names in the Italian fashion industry, synonymous with its unique and complete personal casual wear, fragrances, and full compliment of fashion and lifestyle accessories. The shop itself is quite a spectacle, one that rests unashamedly on the fantasy side of tacky. As for the clothes, they are colourful, ruffled, tight and overwhelmingly feminine and everything, from the rose patterned cardigans to the slinky skirts and barely-there slip dresses, is inscribed with the romantic touch that has become Molinari's trademark Review © 2007, Wcities |

Antiquarius is actually a group of shops organised in a kind of "village" right on King's Road and, contrary to what its name implies, you won't find only antiques here. The green awning and characteristic facade are noteworthy and once inside there is a diverse selection of wares to choose from. You can find lingerie, inexpensive casual wear, vintage suits, Asian-inspired home accessories, collectibles (including a comprehensive selection of old movie posters) and antiques all under one roof. More an art installation than a clothing shop, this duo's "Factory of Lights and Experiment" in a former Victorian electrical workshop houses the signature air-sealed T-shirts and accessories. Antoni & Alison embrace the fun side of fashion, and are great for finding one off pieces that will liven up any outfit. Their fabulous photo print bags are always worth a browse, and they also have a line of Brit. memorabilia, like designer punk jumpers. The clothes are essentially designer street wear - tops with I'm going mad printed on them and the like. Japanese food is now firmly established in the Western world as an haute and healthy cuisine, so it's no surprise that this Soho Japanese supermarket is extremely popular with both Japanese residents and London foodies hoping to find some seaweed for their sushi party. One of the finest English jewellers ever (actually owned by the Sultan of Brunei), Asprey & Garrard's have been royal jewellers since 1735 when Garrard founder George Wickes was appointed Royal Goldsmith by Frederick, Prince of Wales. It's a patronage that continues to the present day with the company holding Royal Warrants from the Queen, The Queen Mother and Prince Charles. Recently they were given the responsibility for making the diamond ring on the occasion of Prince Edward's engagement to Sophie Rhys-Jones. They will of course serve lesser mortals, but unless you earn a six-figure salary, forget it - luxury costs. Everything opulent is here, from a sterling silver computer mouse with accompanying red leather heart-shaped mouse mat, to sterling silver goblets and engagement rings with Asprey's signature setting. One of the highlights of this place is the use of 100 per cent organic cotton and "ecological leather". Select customized products, such as Rolex watches, iPods and designer clothing from Jacob. Wide Range |
Throughout the city London, London United Kingdom |
Bank branches are generally open 9a to 4:30p or 5p Monday-Friday. Some are open on Saturdays, but all are shut on Sundays and bank holidays. Bureaux de Change: Most branches of high-street banks have bureau de change facilities which buy and sell currency for a fee. If you want a foreign currency, it is usually a good idea to order it over the phone or in person in advance of when you are going to need it, although most banks hold a stock of the most popular tourist currencies. Rates of exchange are usually on display. Some travel agents also offer currency exchange, though their fees tend to be higher. The bureau de change kiosks you will see in the West End of London are aimed at tourists and their rates are very poor. Nearly all banks have cashpoint facilities (ATMs) which can be accessed 24 hours a day. The vast majorities of shops, hotels and restaurants take the full range of credit and debit cards, and have the symbols of those they accept displayed in their windows. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Down to earth designer |
40 Elizabeth Street London, London SW1W 9NZ United Kingdom +44 20 7730 2994 http://www.bendelisi.com/ |
This American designer splashed onto the scene a few years back with his ultra-womanly column dresses - long, off-the-shoulder numbers that were sexy and classic. Untainted by success (de Lisi does his own PR) and aware of trends (he can often be spotted around the Brompton Cross and King's Road area), de Lisi also designs a line for Debenhams. Things to expect out of this little shop are beautiful fabrics like cashmere and taffeta in simple colours with sophisticated designs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ben and Hugo Warner founded 'benugo' and it is quite clear that the name of the restaurant is an amalgamation of the founders' names. The sandwiches and salads served at this place are prepared using fresh ingredients and the meat, seafood and even olive oil are imported. Betsey is the kind of eccentric middle-aged woman who you'd hate to have for a mother - if she weren't a top designer with a knack for original dresses that also manage to be sexy and gorgeous. Her colourful, eclectic and outrageous little boudoir doesn't really seem out of place with the Sloane-chic stores of Brompton Cross - after all, spoilt Beverley Hills and Manhattan teenagers swear by her dresses, and who can resist that combination of youth, wealth, beauty and originality? Regardless of your usual attitude towards guided tours, these hop-on, hop-off tours are a good way to get an overview of the city, and you can make mental notes of where to go for a more thorough visit. The price you pay with The Big Bus Company is for a 24-hour ticket; during this time you can travel anywhere on the tour network, which encompasses stops over just about all of central London. Included in the price is a free walking tour and Thames River cruise, as well as numerous discounts for West End shows. Guide tapes are available in 12 languages, and the company won the London Sightseeing Tour of the Year award. Forget yoga! Pilates (pronounced pill-are-tes) is the miracle exercise, according to its growing number of followers. A relatively new discipline developed in the early 20th century, it became popular with dancers and athletes in rehabilitation. Actors and singers also found the slow, thorough stretching and breathing exercises beneficial to their posture. Anyone can take pilates, young or old, athletic or couch potato - while the exercises are gentle, they will make you aware of muscles you never knew you had and over time contribute to a flat stomach and straight posture. Private studios have mushroomed around the city, but classes are still extremely popular, and this South Kensington branch is regularly booked up. Call for a list of approved pilates teachers and other information. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Not that its going to do much to the colour scheme - the displays are always black, cream or grey, with the occasional splash of seasonal colour, and so are the clothes inside. The American fashion minimalists familiar lines of CK underwear, T-shirts, jeans and accessories are all showcased here, but with simple, flattering cuts and quality fabrics, it's no wonder nothing gets between fans and their Calvins. Catalogue and mail order are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cool Spanish leather shoes |
39 Floral Street Covent Garden London, London WC2E 9DG United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7379 8678 |
At this Covent Garden shop, the centerpiece - and only décor - is a big table where all the different shoes are on display. At the back of the space are strangely shaped metal stools for customers to sit on when they try on shoes. The majority of Spanish label Camper's shoes are made of leather in various colors, and they often have old-fashioned, classic styles. Prices are on the high side, but the shoes - trainers, boots, chunky-soled Mary Janes and the like - are beautifully made and are quite different to those offered by other shoe shops. Camper also repairs their own shoes; simply take them to any branch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic French jewellers |
175-176 New Bond Street London, London W1S 4RN United Kingdom +44 20 7408 5700 / +44 20 8080 0330 http://www.cartier.com |
For over 150 years, this French jeweller has remained one of the most venerated houses in the world - a leader in innovative jewellery and watch design. As with most upscale retailers, however, it is always possible to find something within your price range. So, if that diamond and sapphire choker isn't quite in your price range, opt instead for the classic trinity 18-carat white, gold and rose ring at around £400 or a watch from their 'inexpensive' range, for a bit more than £1,000. Remember, a Cartier piece is forever. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dress for less |
52 Blandford Street London, London W1U 7HY United Kingdom +44 20 7935 1052 |
The name 'Catwalk' may be a little over optimistic for a second-hand dress shop, although if you scour the racks scrupulously enough, you will find the odd designer drop off. Pieces from Prada, Paul Smith and Jasper Conran have been spotted. The shop also displays some good post high-street bargains from the stylish and the sensible stores alike, as well as a selection of footwear and accessories. Although you can't always count on the quality, prices are certainly enticing. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Venerated French house |
26 Old Bond Street London, London W1S 4QD United Kingdom +44 20 7493 5040 http://www.chanel.com/ |
Words are not enough to describe this venerated French haute couture house. Young ladies come of age when they get their first Chanel woollen suit and quilted bag. But it is also a classic label that can happily be worn by three generations. For most women, the thought of wearing an authentic Chanel garment is a virtual fantasy. Models like Claudia and Naomi may get theirs for free, but you'll need to visit the boutique and be prepared to part with a lot of money. With shoes, perfumes, handbags, cosmetics and toiletries available, you can seriously be covered from head to toe in Chanel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Top English chocolate maker |
1 Royal Arcade 28 Old Bond Street London, London W1S 4BT United Kingdom +44 20 7491 0939 http://www.charbonnel.co.uk/ |
Many of the PR girls in this swank shopping neighbourhood send out their exploited interns to grab them a quick chocolate fix from this upscale English chocolate maker, established in 1875. Particularly recommended are the champagne truffles and the real hot chocolate mix, which isn't a mix mind you, but actual bits of chocolate deliciously melted under a stream of hot, creamy milk. If you like your luxury chocolate quite sweet, then welcome to heaven. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Designer nails |

Way before all those nail bars cropped up, well-groomed Chelsea girls and their mums had their nails done at this cosy salon. A manicure should be a leisurely experience, and it's nice knowing your manicurist personally, so those not into the whole nail bar thing should head here for either simple, clean nails or outrageous, designer talons. Experience a dose of art with your medicine |
369 Fulham Road London, London SW10 9NH United Kingdom |
Located amongst the bars and restaurants of Fulham Road, you could be forgiven for mistaking Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for a shopping centre. Opened in 1993, the hospital provides treatment for both NHS and private patients. This hospital was designed with the ethos that recovery from illness might be aided by visual and performance arts, which explains the large number of paintings and sculptures that adorn the walls of the corridors. More than a few local employees visit the hospital on Thursday lunchtimes, when professional artists of all styles come in to give free concerts and performances. Review © 2007, Wcities |
