Design: the new sex?
Earl's Court Exhibition Centre
London SW5 9TA
United Kingdom
+44 20 8910 7724
http://www.100percentdesign.co.uk
Having long looked to Paris and Milan for inspiration, London is now generally regarded as the design capital of Europe, maybe even the world. So, where better to showcase young, contemporary designers than here? Over 450 companies exhibit, specially selected by a panel of industry experts. Recent exhibitors have included B&B Italia, SCP, Cappellini, Helen Yardley, TwentyTwentyOne and The Igloo, and all genres of modern design are represented. Unfortunately the first few days of the fair are for trade only, with only the final day open to the public.

We're too used to shops looking even better than the clothes they stock, but disregard this long-standing designer boutique's relatively boring interior. A La Mode stocks clothing from all the most popular labels, including Missoni, Edina Ronay, Marni, March Jacobs, Clements Ribeiro, Matthew Williamson, Saltwater, Jemima Khan and Amanda Wakeley. Forget the huge department stores and shop here, where all of your favourite pieces are laid out for you.

http://www.apc.fr/
Like its fellow French export, Agnes B, APC is all about the basics: clean lines, simple materials and stunning style. The hipster trousers here, for both men and women, are straight and a perfect fit, unless you are petite when a small hem might be required. Some of the coats are a bit military, but that's a question of taste. There's always a small collection of groovy street wear. Of course, there's the range of seemingly disparate accessories, from CDs to olive oil with the common thread being effortless chic. The men's collection has been moved to a shop of its own at 43 All Saints Road, London W11 1HE (+44 20 7221 0884).

Accessorize started as an offshoot of clothing store Monsoon and it's often still found in-store. It's undoubtedly the first place you should head for post-dress purchases, or to cheer yourself up after a lousy day. From beaded bags to silk scarves, hair slides and dainty jewellery, you'll find a comparable version of everything you saw in the latest issue of Vogue, but at a fraction of the price. With prices starting at under a fiver, don't expect this stuff to last, but it should last as long as that particular look is in.

Stores nationwide.

Understatement is a wise art – dressing in simple, clean cuts creates an elegant, self-assured look, where personality is not masked or overpowered. This is a familiar concept at Adolfo Dominguez. The Spanish designer combines natural fabrics with neat styles in natural shades, to create a casually classic collection that has featured on many a catwalk. A touch of color is often added in the detail, such as coral fasteners and pretty knitwear.

A rather conventional part of town for the enfant terrible of the fashion world to base his own shop but, rest assured, that the anti-fashion fashion designer won't be tamed by the respectability of his current base. Full of eccentricity (bones in clothes) and contradiction (the seemingly down-to-earth East End taxi driver's son had liposuction), McQueen is a true fashion innovator known as much for his outlandish designs as his shock tactics on the runway - a man of such prodigious talent that he has already be named British Designer of the Year three times. Even given the dilution necessary to operate a commercial store, his designs are striking and severe with slinky jersey dresses in beige and lemon, molded patent leather pants and skinny dresses all being given his unique touch. Even if you don't intend buying (and very few of you will be able to - McQueen originals do not come cheap) the store is worth checking out for its amazing window displays alone, which, in the past, have featured models posing in simulated snowstorms.

http://www.dunhill.com/
Only a few years ago, Alfred Dunhill had become one of those brands in jeopardy of losing its English appeal. The upscale store epitomised English gentleman style, but it seemed the Japanese and Americans were the only ones wearing its clothes. That's all changed, however, since the line gave itself a modern overhaul (which, by the way, maintains the essence of the old classics). You'll find the selection of ties and cufflinks to be superb, and you won't be disappointed with the personal shopping option either. Visit the Alfred Dunhill Cigar Shop at 27 Jermyn Street for a wonderful selection of cigars and a peek at the largest walk-in humidor in London. You'll find David Linley designs there as well.

It may be a tiny shop nestled away in an arcade off New Bond Street, but Angela Hale is the ultimate in costume vintage jewellery. And its easy to see why - art-deco and Victorian inspired necklaces, bracelets, earrings and hair accessories are all just charming, and the vintage bags will liven up any little black dress. Nestled amongst countless other sex shops in Soho is the glossy 'high-street' version by Ann Summers. As far as sex stores go, this well-known British chain is certainly the most accepted and it's often viewed with a saucy sense of humour. All sizes are catered for at throwaway prices.

This Danish designer makes some of the prettiest, sexiest bustiers in London. Adorned with mesh, satin and sequins, the bustiers are quite covetable and fly off the mannequins and shelves as soon as they arrive. The collection of separates and dresses is slight more demure - expect lots of soft floaty fabrics, beads and sequins in most seasons. And thankfully, most of them look truly unique rather than products from a designer assembly line. The shop's spacious boudoir interior will bring out the inner girlie in you.

Since then, Blumarine has become one of the biggest names in the Italian fashion industry, synonymous with its unique and complete personal casual wear, fragrances, and full compliment of fashion and lifestyle accessories. The shop itself is quite a spectacle, one that rests unashamedly on the fantasy side of tacky. It's a patronage that continues to the present day with the company holding Royal Warrants from the Queen, The Queen Mother and Prince Charles. Recently they were given the responsibility for making the diamond ring on the occasion of Prince Edward's engagement to Sophie Rhys-Jones. They will of course serve lesser mortals, but unless you earn a six-figure salary, forget it - luxury costs. http://www.betseyjohnson.com
Betsey is the kind of eccentric middle-aged woman who you'd hate to have for a mother - if she weren't a top designer with a knack for original dresses that also manage to be sexy and gorgeous. Her colourful, eclectic and outrageous little boudoir doesn't really seem out of place with the Sloane-chic stores of Brompton Cross - after all, spoilt Beverley Hills and Manhattan teenagers swear by her dresses, and who can resist that combination of youth, wealth, beauty and originality? Expect loads of ruffles, velvets, tulles and mad prints from a favourite New York designer you'd probably love to have as an embarrassing mother.

A mix of time past on two floors - think beaded dresses, leather coats, vintage bags, sunglasses, jewellery, knitted tops and low-cut trousers. The goods seem to span from the fifties into the eighties. Prices vary but tend to be on the more expensive side, but don't let that put you off. For unusual party outfits or vintage chic this shop has a good selection. Friendly service and roomy enough to have a good browse.

Bond Street

Designer chic
Bond Street
London, London W5 5AA
United Kingdom
Named after Sir Thomas Bond, the financial controller of the Queen's Household at the court of King Charles I in the 17th century, the Bond Street area was swampy, uninhabited and near a plague pit - an unsavory area where highwaymen preyed on passers-by and noblemen fought duels. By the 1850s, however, Bond Street had undergone something of a renaissance and become a place lined with fashionable shops, where members of high society would stroll the streets. And it has remained so, although tourists and shop-a-holics are its main visitors now. Nonetheless, Bond Street still has many traders who display the Royal Warrant and maintain a tradition of individual service, with many leading fashion houses where made-to-measure garments can be purchased. For lovers of art, high fashion and elegant clothes, jewelery and leather goods, there is no equal to Bond Street. Acquisitions and changes have enhanced its reputation further over the years with key fashion houses - such as Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton - opening shops.

Boxfresh stocks a casual range of vaguely urban clothing, with mainly sporty styles like hooded jackets, wide trousers and vest tops. Its a bit like Stussy, but not so skatewear oriented. Boxfresh's own label is colourful yet simple - chinos, jeans, simply patterned shirts and drawstring trousers are all in abundance. There is a women's range, but it largely consists of boyish clothing and casual short skirts. Hats and other accessories are also on sale so it's a good place to stop for summery casual wear.

One of the most famous fashion emporiums in London, Joan Burnstein's style Mecca is still a force to be reckoned with. Every label is lovingly hand-picked, saving you time and energy which should be saved up for earning the money you'll need to buy designer wear from the likes of Jil Sander, Tocca, Dolce & Gabbana, Dries van Noten, Clements Ribiero and Ghost. More than this though, Browns is a complete shopping experience, where there is always something new and spectacular to see, whether it is a one off silk wrap from Indonesia or a precious gemstone ring from Rajasthan. And, of course, where you can find out which labels are hot, which are classics and which are about to get big quicker than you can say "fashion victim".

This young, hip version of the fashion institution Browns presupposes that despite your youth and unkempt look, you are loaded. Stylish menswear with unusual detail is what Burro is all about, and in their brand new shop, they now mainly sell their own-label designs. Even though the clothes are designed for men, they can just as well be worn by women, as many designs are unisex in their cut and use of color and materials. There is some fabulous knitwear, plus nicely-cut trousers and tops. Don't miss the small selection of accessories, such as scarves and jewellery. Burro also offers trainers by Lorenzo Merlino, Nike and Adidas, as well as selected CDs and toys. Ideal for anyone who is tired of the high street and designer logos. The clientele is mainly young and trendy.

As with most upscale retailers, however, it is always possible to find something within your price range. So, if that diamond and sapphire choker isn't quite in your price range, opt instead for the classic trinity 18-carat white, gold and rose ring at around £400 or a watch from their 'inexpensive' range, for a bit more than £1,000. Another area on the up, Chelsea Green is now home to some of the most sought-after designers in London. Australian Dinnigan no exception; she is designer to the stars and very now. Her London shop has been graced by customers such as Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett. Her trademark is dresses in light chiffon, silk and lace fabrics with gorgeous detailing, but she is also exploring other areas and has recently launched a denim line. Try on a dress and you'll feel like a million dollars.

Comme des Garçons

Fade to black
59 Brook Street
off New Bond Street
London, London W1K 4HS
United Kingdom
+44 20 7514 0057
Despite the Gaelic name, Comme des Garçons epitomises Japanese deconstructionist and, well, black designs. Rei Kawabuko's collections are notably wearable - especially when compared to contemporaries like Yohji Yamamoto - even if her catwalk designs are a little too extreme for most people's tastes. Another popular in-store collection is the diffusion line, by Junya Watanabe, which takes on another typically Japanese favourite - the school uniform - and adds all kinds of colour and shape to the proceedings. Beware, though, as intriguing as the designs may be, they're strictly for the fashion crowd, and readers of Wallpaper.

Cornucopia

Miss Havisham's floaty dresses
12 Upper Tachbrook Street
Victoria
London, London SW1V 1SH
United Kingdom
+44 20 7828 5752
Truly overflowing with intriguing garments - most of which appear to be Miss Havisham's cast-offs - this shop is chock-a-block. Choose from vintage, floaty, or white numbers that resemble bridalwear. The assemblage is so vast that the rails cannot possibly contain them all and floral dresses hang from the ceiling, and piles of clothing litter the floor. Be careful if you're catching a train at Victoria, as hours can pass quickly in transfixed timewarp.

Finally Chelsea kids get a mecca of conspicuous consumerism to call their own. From the founder of Waterstone's comes a fun shopping experience for children in their single digits. Find not only toys, games and clothes here, but also a carousel, hairdressing salon and a very well stocked book department - this is a department store for children which will undoubtedly capture the hearts of many parents too. Akin to a Harvey Nichols - check out labels like Gant, Polo, Kenzo and Kent & Carey in the first floor clothing and shoes section. Regular events and activities are held, so you could make a visit here a weekly event.

Debonair

Practical, sexy

London, London W10 5TZ
United Kingdom

Debonair head honcho and designer Deborah is quite possibly a genius. Somehow, possibly from being one herself, she has gotten in to the heads of rock chicks everywhere and figured out exactly what they want to wear for work, partying and slumber. You might just be able to wear the same outfit (with some tweaking) for all of the above occasions. Like for example her dresses: lycra front to be worn under suit jacket for 9-5 and after hours, swap the lace back to the front and you are all set to hit the clubs. Ditto for the three in one necklace/belt/choker pieces. The clothes deliver on Deborah's promise of 'practikally sexy wear'. Raw leather punky apron skirts, customised jeans and t-shirts are hot, hot sellers. Destiny's Child, Kate Moss and fashion stylists from any hip magazine you can name are Debonair groupies.

Despite being occasionally overlooked among the other illustrious West End stores, D&J is in fact a highly-esteemed major league player in department shopping. Contemporary styles for the younger woman make up the ground floor with brands such as Gas and DKNY Jeans, while more classic designs from the likes of Jasper Conran, Ronit Zilkha and Nicole Farhi are attractively displayed on the first floor. The alluringly impressive perfumery and cosmetics department includes a Clarins beauty salon and a men's grooming studio on the lower ground floor, alongside a very fine menswear department featuring classic brands and designer concessions. Choice homeware can be found at the summit of this monument to shopping, including hand-crafted items and furniture made by burgeoning designers in the Prince's Trust Scheme. Retaining a respectful calmness in an area otherwise besieged by frantic crowds of shoppers, D&J is a tastefully refined department store, expensive but wholly unpretentious.

Looking for clothes that are equally flamboyant and kitschy? Head down to Dolce & Gabbana - you won't be disappointed. The Italian duo, who are now Oscar night firm favourites, specialize in everything from corsets made in sheer, satin and organza fabrics to figure-hugging and revealing creations that are 100 per cent sure to seduce. The store itself leaves much to be desired - faux Victorian armchairs rest casually above gaudy leopard print rugs and the sale staff aren't always ready to assist. However, this is one of the most fashionable lines in Europe and just by wearing it, you'll be making a statement.

Sleek, casual and flattering natural clothing is brought to you by the Queen of minimalist fashion in New York City. Grey, black and white hues dominate her designer label collection. The bronzed designer extraordinaire wants everyone to look as beautiful and contented as she herself feels in the Hamptons. Her minimalist line has won her the loyalty of countless ordinary women and an army of famous clients, such as Demi Moore, who was so enamoured she agreed to appear in her ads. Yes, the clothes will make you look effortlessly heavenly, but such a feat comes with a hefty price tag.

Trendy up-to-the-minute styles are the order of day at Dune, be they for work or play. True to its name, the store is decorated in earthy beige hues, and you won't find any outrageous colours amongst the footwear either (which may or may not be a good thing depending on your taste). Kit yourself out in a fashionable pair of mules or kitten heels, or accessorise with one of the many handbags available. If it's 'in', you'll find it at Dune and the clientele, primarily 'It' girl types, reflects this. Good value fashionable footwear and accessories for trendy young folk on tight and not-so-tight budgets.
