Scary bookshop |

Founded in 1922 by Michael Houghton, an Eastern European refugee, as an occult book shop, he also ran an occult lodge (ominously called The Order of the Hidden Masters) and one of the first occult correspondence course from these premises, while the infamous Alistair Crowley was a patron. The collection of works includes such titles as Pan, Great God of Nature andThe Goat Foot God. Still want to venture in? Well then you're either a braver soul than most, or a horny-handed servant of Lucifer. Whichever, you won't disappointed - the store has a massive collection of works on subjects ranging from paganism to ufology and the Gnostics. You have been warned. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Comfortable shoes in a wide range of colors and materials are on display in this bright, white shop. Sandals, clogs and the like are best sellers. Birkenstock has become more and more fashionable and its designs have been copied by many high street chains, but this is the original brand. Its designers are also creating shoes that are increasingly in sync with the latest trends in the world of fashion, like the grey felt or fake pony skin clogs. Expect rather high prices. A mix of time past on two floors - think beaded dresses, leather coats, vintage bags, sunglasses, jewellery, knitted tops and low-cut trousers. The goods seem to span from the fifties into the eighties. Prices vary but tend to be on the more expensive side, but don't let that put you off. For unusual party outfits or vintage chic this shop has a good selection. Friendly service and roomy enough to have a good browse. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Boxfresh stocks a casual range of vaguely urban clothing, with mainly sporty styles like hooded jackets, wide trousers and vest tops. Its a bit like Stussy, but not so skatewear oriented. Boxfresh's own label is colourful yet simple - chinos, jeans, simply patterned shirts and drawstring trousers are all in abundance. There is a women's range, but it largely consists of boyish clothing and casual short skirts. Hats and other accessories are also on sale so it's a good place to stop for summery casual wear. Stylish menswear with unusual detail is what Burro is all about, and in their brand new shop, they now mainly sell their own-label designs. Even though the clothes are designed for men, they can just as well be worn by women, as many designs are unisex in their cut and use of color and materials. There is some fabulous knitwear, plus nicely-cut trousers and tops. Don't miss the small selection of accessories, such as scarves and jewellery. Burro also offers trainers by Lorenzo Merlino, Nike and Adidas, as well as selected CDs and toys. Ideal for anyone who is tired of the high street and designer logos. The clientele is mainly young and trendy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cool Spanish leather shoes |
39 Floral Street Covent Garden London, London WC2E 9DG United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7379 8678 |
At this Covent Garden shop, the centerpiece - and only décor - is a big table where all the different shoes are on display. At the back of the space are strangely shaped metal stools for customers to sit on when they try on shoes. The majority of Spanish label Camper's shoes are made of leather in various colors, and they often have old-fashioned, classic styles. Prices are on the high side, but the shoes - trainers, boots, chunky-soled Mary Janes and the like - are beautifully made and are quite different to those offered by other shoe shops. Camper also repairs their own shoes; simply take them to any branch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

French Connection clearly subscribes to the philosophy "sex sells". With such a saucy advertising campaign centering around the so-funny acronym of fcuk (French Connection UK) you would be forgiven for expecting a boudoir-style store with leather and PVC aplenty. However, French Connection's strengths are in fact smart, well-made suits and separates. Out of all the high street stores, fcuk is one of the more expensive, good quality shops. It's no wonder it's a favorite with office staff. Branches are too numerous to list. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Particularly recommended are Montgomery's Cheddar, Colston Bassett Stilton and Appleby's Cheshire, but if you find yourself spoilt for choice, an expert assistant will be on hand to help out. A trip to Oxfam can be likened to a box of chocolates - you never know what you are going to get. However, this popular charity shop's ambitious selection of second-hand clothes, books, home furnishings, stationery and fair trade goods has made it what it is today - the fifth largest retailer in the UK. Oxfam shops continue to contribute to the charity's mission to eliminate poverty around the world. It has branches nationwide. See Oxfam Originals for "upmarket" second-hand clothes without the whiff of must. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Three floors of jeans and casual clothing |
33 Neal Street Covent Garden London, London WC2 United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7379 7978 http://www.pepejeans.com/ |
This English jeans company has a gigantic store, but faces stiff competition from denim giant Diesel across the road, even though the two labels are quite different. There are jeans, jeans and more jeans in the store, on three floors. Menswear is on the ground and first floor, and women's wear on the top floor. Casual is the keyword, and there's plenty to choose from - warm jackets, denim jackets, body warmers, knitted tops and combats. The space is airy and it is easy to browse. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant womenswear for day and night |
17-19 Neal Street London, London WC2H 9PU United Kingdom +44 20 7240 4401 |
The sister shop to Karen Millen, but slightly more sober, the designers (Madeleine Press and Tonia Bastyan) behind this store used to frequent the shelves of Liberty. The shop is on two levels, although the first part of the lower level has an alarmingly low ceiling and feels claustrophobic. If you like your clothes simple without loud logos or wild patterns, this is a good place to browse. The clothes look expensive but don't cost the earth. Excellent trousers and skirts with matching jackets are perfect for any occasion and pretty dresses, in a variety of materials, offer a more feminine and glamorous look for the evening. Nice bags in various styles are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

38 Floral Street Covent Garden London, London WC2E 9DG United Kingdom +44 20 7836 8220 |
People who love fashion shop here, despite it being one of the smallest shops in Covent Garden. Hence the mix of established names and more up-and-coming young designers including Jade Jagger, Ghost, Maria Chen and Stephanie Kelian. It's certainly not cheap with the most inexpensive items starting at about £45, but it's certainly chic. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Australian surfing (and snowboarding) gear |
Units 1 Earlham Street The Thomas Neal Centre, Covent Garden London, London WC2 United Kingdom +44 20 7836 5371 http://www.quicksilver-europe.com |
Escape a grey London day by sneaking inside this store to watch surfing videos and to dream yourself away to somewhere warmer and sunnier. Quiksilver is not strictly all about surfing though - clothes for snowboarding and actual snowboards are sold here too. You'll also find jackets, dresses, shoes, shirts and accessories like hats and sunglasses. There is plenty to choose from and this shopping center is usually rather quiet, so you can take your time to browse. There are a few other Quiksilver branches nationwide so find one closest to you. French-influenced food on a river boat |
Victoria Embankment London, London WC2N 5DJ United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7839 3011 http://www.hispaniola.co.uk info@hispaniola.co.uk |
Although it is named the RS Hispaniola, there is little Spanish influence aboard this boat cum restaurant. In fact, the food tends to be French-influenced making an evening here better than the average Channel crossing. The service is naturally ship-shape, and the Hispaniola offers a great three-course set lunch. All in all, the dining experience here is more for novelty value and good views. The RS Hispaniola can be hired out for corporate functions and entertainment in the form of magicians, musicians or belly dancers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

All that jazz! |

Gazing in through the dusty windows dressed with old record sleeves and posters, you can really sense the history of this little London institution. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time...no hyped-up promotion, bright lights and flashing video screens here. Ray's is the definition of an independent jazz record store, with unfussy isles, wooden floors and an imposing old-style counter where you'll find friendly, unrushed service. It probably hasn't changed much since opening in 1982, except for the addition of the blues and folk basement. The sense of timelessness and tradition befitting the music sold does not however detract from the huge choice of CDs and vinyl, ranging from second-hand to the latest releases. What's more, there's always a feeling that a lost, rare recording is just waiting to be found in one of the racks. In reality though this would never happen, because Ray's staff are as knowledgeable as it gets, and a section named "Rare as hen's teeth" takes you right to these musical curios. Minimalist chic |
116 Long Acre Covent Garden London, London WC2 9PA United Kingdom +44 20 7240 7495 / +44 20 7240 7150 http://www.reiss.co.uk/ |
It's hard for a man past his trainers-and-designer-jeans phase to dress well within a budget. This exemplary high street chain offers very trendy lines without making concessions on its rather conservative and minimalist essence. Other than suits and straight-leg trousers in numerous fabrics, check out cashmere mix jumpers, silk shirts and velcro-fastened shoes. Clothing is mostly neutral in colour, but they do let some colour in if seasonal fashion involves bright shades. Prices aren't as low as in most high-street stores, but they aren't sky-high either. Reiss has recently introduced a women's' range, which is much the same style wise as the men's range. It has branches in most major shopping areas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In the great tradition of 'traveller' shops, this Rohan store has super-friendly staff on hand to help you pick the right clothing and shoes for your trip. They supply a whole range of clothes for adventures in extreme climates as well as providing gear for all the gradients of weather in between. They pride themselves on their technical expertise and select fabrics from only the best textile mills and fibre producers. As a result, all of the clothing from the featherweight windbreakers to the heaviest fleece are suitable for specific weather conditions and are easy to wash. Their stuff tends to be snapped up by travellers looking multifunctional clothing and backpacks, but for other adventure accessories, you'll have to look elsewhere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

British plays and musicals |
Savoy Court London, London WC2R 0EU United Kingdom +44 870 164 8787 http://www.savoytheatre.co.uk/... |
This British theatre was originally built to be the home of Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy Operas, and was restored to its original art deco form in 1993 after the auditorium and roof were destroyed by fire. The theatre usually shows plays of the British persuasion (e.g. Noel Coward's Hay Fever and a musical version of Hardy's Tess of the D'Ubervilles) but at Christmas it often hosts a variety of children's shows. The auditorium holds just over 1,100 people, including seats for wheelchairs in the dress circle, and it can also be hired for conference purposes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hip decor, blue sky walls, life-size Manga figures, funky music and cutting-edge clothes are making Super Lovers the current place to go for club chic. Opened in 1998, this Japanese store has fast gathered a fashion-conscious following in London, who flock to buy the flowery frocks, PVC jackets, old skool Adidas tracksuits and tartan mini-kilts bearing the Lovers Rock logo. Swear's shoes have graced the feet of the Star Wars: Phantom Menace cast, so it's no surprise to find they specialise in far-out styles and trekkie designs. Think urban shoes with intergalactic antennae, chunky trainers with Velcro straps and side laces, red basketball boots with flame design. But Swear is more than a mere purveyor of crazy, futuristic footwear, it's a state of mind. There's Swear music (generally on the warped side of dance); Swear films (This is Spinal Tap, Coyote Ugly and China: The Panda Adventure being approved titles); and even an online community. Fashion's best kept secret |
1-4 Langley Court Covent Garden London WC2E 9JY United Kingdom +44 20 7497 8862 http://www.tedbaker.co.uk/ |
Ted Baker has long been one of London's more high profile mainstream street designers. The boutiques display the company's line of men and womenswear as well as the Global range and Teddy Boy and Girl collections that have all attained a certain level of respect within the fashion community - a factor that also finds expression in the quality and prices of the garments. Clothing is best described as trendy up-market smart casual. Largely shirt oriented, it adds a few funky twists but style-wise generally plays it safe. Branded accessories, fragrances, underwear, knitwear and shoes are also a sought-after fixture. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spiritual specialists |
10 Bloomsbury Way Bloomsbury London, London WC1A 2SH United Kingdom +44 20 7405 5284 |
Visualization of deities is an essential part of Buddhist meditation. Which is why the Tibet Shop only sells high quality statues and thangkas - Buddhist paintings - and avoids cheap tourist creations that have many errors compared to the original texts. Because of the political situation, making Buddhist artworks is illegal in Tibet, so all of their statues and paintings are handmade by Tibetan, Bhutanese and Nepalese artists in exile in Nepal. They also sell jewelry, clothing, meditation tapes and incense to help up the spirituality quota of your loft apartment. Donations to the Free Tibet campaign and for Buddhist activities at the Dharma Centre in Finland are welcomed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Model haircauts |

Vidal Sassoon are right up there with Toni & Guy in the chic hairdressers league. They're the kind of company who cut the hair of models in hairdressing magazines, and they even have their own range of styling products called VS. Its not all hype though - the company has made their name by offering consistently high standards in both cuts and salons, which all have the same black leather settees. They're particularly renowned for hair colouring, and some branches even offer beauty treatments. Unsurprisingly, VS tends to be on the pricey side. If you don't want to spend a fortune, there are several Vidal Sassoon schools that offer dirt-cheap cuts if you don't mind limited hours and being a guinea pig for hairdressing students.
