The best hairdressers are impossible to book in London. Take the astronomically priced B:ZAR, for instance. Although smaller than its former incarnation on strip joint-heavy Great Windmill Street, its wooden floors, white waiting sofa, and funky staff all add to its hip appeal. Haircuts are around £30, even cheaper with student discounts. One thing though - the all-Japanese staff speak limited English.

Base Cuts is the anti-salon. It's sharp. It's loud. It's not where you would bring your gran for a blue rinse. And anyone walking down Portobello Road can ogle at you while you get the chop. But the hairdressers are skilled at what the shop name suggests - simple, base cuts at excellent prices. A perfect spot for the starving student and the up-and-coming clubber.

This "Day Spa" takes into consideration your hectic schedule and your need for fun. Instead of taking a week's holiday to hole yourself up in a spa in the middle of nowhere, take a half-day off to enjoy spa therapies here. Their mantra reads: "Heal your soul. Cleanse your spirit. Relax your mind. Achieve peace. Improve your body. Give yourself a break, a treat, a chance, a day, a week, an hour at Akqa - and find the true you." How can you argue with that? Massages, facials, hairdressing, and complementary treatments (including an oxygen bar) are available for both sexes.

Find not only toys, games and clothes here, but also a carousel, hairdressing salon and a very well stocked book department - this is a department store for children which will undoubtedly capture the hearts of many parents too. Akin to a Harvey Nichols - check out labels like Gant, Polo, Kenzo and Kent & Carey in the first floor clothing and shoes section. Despite being occasionally overlooked among the other illustrious West End stores, D&J is in fact a highly-esteemed major league player in department shopping. Contemporary styles for the younger woman make up the ground floor with brands such as Gas and DKNY Jeans, while more classic designs from the likes of Jasper Conran, Ronit Zilkha and Nicole Farhi are attractively displayed on the first floor. The alluringly impressive perfumery and cosmetics department includes a Clarins beauty salon and a men's grooming studio on the lower ground floor, alongside a very fine menswear department featuring classic brands and designer concessions. Choice homeware can be found at the summit of this monument to shopping, including hand-crafted items and furniture made by burgeoning designers in the Prince's Trust Scheme. Retaining a respectful calmness in an area otherwise besieged by frantic crowds of shoppers, D&J is a tastefully refined department store, expensive but wholly unpretentious.

If you don't know what a flotation tank is, think of it as a big bathtub. Due to the high percentage of salts and minerals in the water, your body just floats. The water is filtered after each visit, and the dark rooms are calming, not claustrophobic. So slip into your bathing suit, get in and float for around an hour. You'll be so relaxed that when you come to, you'll be flabbergasted to see that your time is up. An hour here is equivalent to about four hours of sleep. After a session, you may experience some psychological and physical release; for example, you may feel twitchy or just extremely mellow. Discounts available for multiple-floats, and apparently the optimum number is three.

This beautiful 1920s art deco spa is an old fashioned oasis of calm. Unlike most of London's new spas, there are no trendy touches, in fact, most of the period details - green and white tiles, high ceilings and original fixtures - have been left untouched. Try the Moroccan glove full body scrub - your skin will be as soft as a baby's after a session on the marble slab tables. The usual range of beauty and body treatments are available and are generally better value for money than most spas. Relax and cleanse your body of its impurities in the Turkish saunas and Russian steam rooms. There's also a cold plunge pool, spa bath and sauna, swimming pool, showers (with all-over hoses) and a large relaxation area. The day spa fee includes unlimited access to these facilities, but treatments are extra. It's all absolute bliss. The spa has special hours for women only, men only and mixed clientele, so call to ask for details.

Treat yourself to a Thai manicure or a Lancôme facial - there is a Lancôme beauty spa on the premises, which offers a wide range of beauty therapies. For brides-to-be there is a "Prepare to be Beautiful" package, which lasts around five hours. This includes a variety of beauty treatments and you can also have a Lancôme make-over.

Appropriately named, the Tanning Shop is indeed the place to go for sunshine in London. Filled with strange space-like capsules that cheat nature to give you that sun-kissed glow, the Tanning Shop also offers low-cost beauty treatments, such as eyebrow shaping, massage, lymphatic drainage, facials and body wraps. Be sure to try the miracle "Arasys" slimming treatment - it supposedly helps you lose inches that normally would take you months to budge at a gym.

With branches located across the city, you'll never be that far from (artificial) sunlight. Check your directory for the location nearest you.

Toni & Guy

Award winners
Unit 1a
28 Kensington Church Street
London, London W8 4EP
United Kingdom
+44 20 7937 0030
http://www.toniandguy.co.uk/
If you want the kind of adventurous haircut normally only seen in magazines, Toni & Guy is the place for you. For the most up-to-the-minute styles, their stylists are the coolest around and often sport wild cuts themselves. Those just after a trim needn't be alarmed - this is one of the few places where the stylists actually seem to listen to what you want done. On the downside, the salons are often packed out with people, and it's quite pricey, though cost varies greatly with what you're having done. If you'd like a great cut but can't afford to come here, the Toni & Guy Academy is an option – you can get your hair cut for free by modelling for students. Branches everywhere – check online or in your local directory for your nearest.

London, SE1 7RG

This friendly and, of course, Health Authority-registered studio offers both tattooing and body piercing, ranging from those dinky ankle roses to exotic designs. Andi Bone & Guests will sit down with you and discuss your ideas in a friendly environment - gone are the days of big scary bikers and dodgy shack-like studios. Custom work is a specialty, but no one will laugh at you if you only get a dainty butterfly on your hip.

Rather like a smaller version of Daisy & Tom, this store offers books, games, clothing, shoes and a hairdressers, all of which are aimed at 0-11 year olds. The clothing is good old practical stuff - you won't find any miniature leather trousers here, though the odd Ralph Lauren or Kenzo outfit can be found. Kids will find the book and toy corner appealing, giving you some time to peruse the collections. Although there's no mail order service, you can supplement purchases by ordering from the web site.

Vidal Sassoon

Model haircauts
45A Monmouth Street
Covent Garden
London, London WC2H 9DG
United Kingdom
+44 20 7240 6635
http://www.vidalsassoon.com/
Vidal Sassoon are right up there with Toni & Guy in the chic hairdressers league. They're the kind of company who cut the hair of models in hairdressing magazines, and they even have their own range of styling products called VS. Its not all hype though - the company has made their name by offering consistently high standards in both cuts and salons, which all have the same black leather settees. They're particularly renowned for hair colouring, and some branches even offer beauty treatments. Unsurprisingly, VS tends to be on the pricey side. If you don't want to spend a fortune, there are several Vidal Sassoon schools that offer dirt-cheap cuts if you don't mind limited hours and being a guinea pig for hairdressing students.
