A La Mode

In style
36 Hans Crescent (behind Harrods)
Knightsbridge
London, London SW1X OLZ
United Kingdom
+44 20 7584 2133
We're too used to shops looking even better than the clothes they stock, but disregard this long-standing designer boutique's relatively boring interior. A La Mode stocks clothing from all the most popular labels, including Missoni, Edina Ronay, Marni, March Jacobs, Clements Ribeiro, Matthew Williamson, Saltwater, Jemima Khan and Amanda Wakeley. Forget the huge department stores and shop here, where all of your favourite pieces are laid out for you.

21 Motcomb Street
Belgravia
London, London SW1X 8LB
United Kingdom
+44 20 7235 7111
This chic boutique is stocked with everything an It girl could want. Specializing in Brazilian and Parisian designs, Akademi carries only unique, new labels, shying away from the more predictable well-known ones. But what does this mean for the serious shopper? Everything from cute logo tees and great jeans to girlie Scott Henshall tops and urban wear is the answer. And you can rest in the knowledge that the shop's socialite owners - Lady Victoria Hervey and Jayne Blight, have handpicked everything.

Downstairs you'll find the younger Philosophy line which is more experimental in style and more fun to wear. All items of clothing are utterly feminine. This exclusive opticians and spectacle shop started up when the owner's grandfather found a collection of antique frames behind a wall in a shop they once owned. As a result, frames from the late 19th century can be purchased here. Many smart designer frames are also on sale, including Theo, Oliver Peoples, LA Eyeworks, Paul Smith, etc. A range of contact lenses is also available. Eye tests are available at only £20. Repairs can be carried out and there's even a same-day service. So, if you need that favourite pair of spectacles copied they'll do it for you from £140.

United Kingdom

This pricey but delicious café and pâtisserie is a regular stop for the locals of SW3 and SW1. The speciality breads are not to be missed, particularly the roasted garlic bread, which is out of this world. If you're feeling naughty though try the chocolate cake, and if you're not a chocoholic the Grandma cake is just as good. The shop's savoury delights are also excellent - as is everything this little shop creates. On warm weather days, try to grab one of the coveted outdoor tables where you can enjoy a morning coffee or afternoon break.

Down to earth designer

United Kingdom
+44 20 7730 2994
http://www.bendelisi.com/
This American designer splashed onto the scene a few years back with his ultra-womanly column dresses - long, off-the-shoulder numbers that were sexy and classic. Untainted by success (de Lisi does his own PR) and aware of trends (he can often be spotted around the Brompton Cross and King's Road area), de Lisi also designs a line for Debenhams. Things to expect out of this little shop are beautiful fabrics like cashmere and taffeta in simple colours with sophisticated designs.

Betsey is the kind of eccentric middle-aged woman who you'd hate to have for a mother - if she weren't a top designer with a knack for original dresses that also manage to be sexy and gorgeous. Her colourful, eclectic and outrageous little boudoir doesn't really seem out of place with the Sloane-chic stores of Brompton Cross - after all, spoilt Beverley Hills and Manhattan teenagers swear by her dresses, and who can resist that combination of youth, wealth, beauty and originality? Expect loads of ruffles, velvets, tulles and mad prints from a favourite New York designer you'd probably love to have as an embarrassing mother.

Words are not enough to describe this venerated French haute couture house. Young ladies come of age when they get their first Chanel woollen suit and quilted bag. But it is also a classic label that can happily be worn by three generations. For most women, the thought of wearing an authentic Chanel garment is a virtual fantasy. Models like Claudia and Naomi may get theirs for free, but you'll need to visit the boutique and be prepared to part with a lot of money. Looking for clothes that are equally flamboyant and kitschy? Head down to Dolce & Gabbana - you won't be disappointed. The Italian duo, who are now Oscar night firm favourites, specialize in everything from corsets made in sheer, satin and organza fabrics to figure-hugging and revealing creations that are 100 per cent sure to seduce. The store itself leaves much to be desired - faux Victorian armchairs rest casually above gaudy leopard print rugs and the sale staff aren't always ready to assist. Harrods 102

Harrods' sister-concern
102 Brompton Road
London, London SW3 1JJ
United Kingdom
+44 (0)20 7730 1234
This offshoot of Harrods, bang opposite the real thing, is a convenience store for groceries and more. You can shop for ingredients or readymade meals—it's all here under one roof. Fournil de Pierre and Krispy Kreme outlets are housed here. You will also find an oxygen bar, dry cleaners, and florists. The store hopes to draw crowds to its takeaway joints and franchised fast food outlets. It simply can't get more convenient than this!

The chic and modern Knightsbridge Harvey Nichols store was a real favorite with the late Princess Diana. Harvey Nicks (as it's known) concentrates mainly on selling beautiful designer clothes, and the indecisive or time-pressed can even book a personal shopper to assist them free of charge. All you have to do is tell them what you're looking for and your measurements and they'll pick out the stores' most suitable selection. Other departments include the ground floor perfumery, the fourth floor Aveda Spa, the Fifth Floor Café and Bar, Yo! Sushi. If that isn't enough, you can take some exquisitely packaged goodies away from the food hall. Perch at the espresso bar or browse through the organic and vitamin section, where you can use the touch screen computer for health food information.

Famous for its silk scarves, the equestrian link and luxury leather goods, Hermès represents true luxury. The bags, especially, are very sought-after. Although the scarves have become a cliché of the Sloane uniform, this fashion house still retains its exclusive air. While it is undoubtedly expensive, you have to remind yourself that are paying for quality.

Issey Miyake is now well known in the fashion world for his minimalist, cleverly-constructed garments. He's been growing from strength to strength for the last 30 years, and is famous for the more inspirational side of the catwalk. The clothing in his Brompton Road shop tends to favour the darker side of the colour spectrum, with many items being plain black or white, though occasionally a little colour creeps in. He brought the pleat back into prominence, and designs a separate diffusion line called Pleats Please (at 20 Brook Street, off Bond Street, W1, tel. +44 20 7495 2306), featuring more of the same in plain colours and different prints.

This boutique belongs to an earlier era decade when women favoured 'dressmakers' over a favourite label or designer. In keeping with that tradition, Jacques Azagury sells beautiful, formal eveningwear for the sophisticated women who know exactly what she wants to wear. The designs are relatively simple, but the matching shoes and purses in the boutique across the road are gorgeous.

Outrageous Jean Paul Gaultier is still churning out his crazy creations, along with his more conventional mass-market designs. Our friend from across the Channel likes to shock - and indeed he does, with his colour and pattern combinations/violations. If your eyes can deal with the clashing colours, don't forget that not everyone else's can. These are really outrageous designs for flamboyant people, although there are a few conservative black and white pieces, all of which are beautifully cut from sumptuous material. Adventurous men can pick up a mini kilt, and women can choose from accessories that include dainty handbags and extremely pointy shoes.

But that's a small price to pay for sparkly satins, animal prints and rhinestones. Choo's partner is London socialite Tamara Yeardye, so it's no wonder all the IT girls are wearing Jimmy Choo's. Like many other unique, glam boutiques, the items here are directly related to the owner's heritage, looks and personality. Spanish ex-model Celia Forner opened La Joya in May 1999 after six years of jewellery making experience, and both her designs - big and bold 22-carat gold set with citrine, peridot or amethyst - and those of hot designers like Jade Jagger are stocked. But aware of the small market for jewellery, Forner decided to shape her store into a showcase for an exclusive range of objects from around the world. You'll find many one-offs and limited editions of hats, hair accessories, leather goods and scarves as well as jewellery.

London is still a global fashion force. Home to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Clements Ribiero and Ronit Zilkha, London leads the pack when it comes to eclectic style. New York may be sleek, Paris classic, Milan chic, and Tokyo super-trendy, but London mixes it all up to great effect. Two annual fashion weeks, sponsored by The British Fashion Council and Vidal Sassoon, bring you the best of the new season's collections. While the Natural History Museum is usually the site of most catwalk shows, many designers are taking their shows to other, hipper venues.
