Inexpensive, up-to-the-minute add-ons
189 Harrow Road
Monsoon Building
London, London W2 6NB
United Kingdom
+44 20 7313 3000
http://www.accessorize.co.uk
Accessorize started as an offshoot of clothing store Monsoon and it's often still found in-store. It's undoubtedly the first place you should head for post-dress purchases, or to cheer yourself up after a lousy day. From beaded bags to silk scarves, hair slides and dainty jewellery, you'll find a comparable version of everything you saw in the latest issue of Vogue, but at a fraction of the price. With prices starting at under a fiver, don't expect this stuff to last, but it should last as long as that particular look is in.

Stores nationwide.

United Kingdom

If you are visiting the UK for a few days, weeks or even months you have a choice - buy a cheap prepay phone which won't cost you much but will hardly do your street credibility any favours, or you could rent a top of the range handset. Going abroad, prepay won't let you roam - or will at an abominable price. Chiswick-based Adam Phones, one of only 12 Vodafone service providers left in the UK, will sort you out with a Motorola Timeport. You also get accessories, temporary business cards and an information service to call on when you are away. Still not convinced? The Carphone Warehouse, Europe's largest mobile retailer, uses this company to fulfil its hire orders.

Understatement is a wise art – dressing in simple, clean cuts creates an elegant, self-assured look, where personality is not masked or overpowered. This is a familiar concept at Adolfo Dominguez. The Spanish designer combines natural fabrics with neat styles in natural shades, to create a casually classic collection that has featured on many a catwalk. A touch of color is often added in the detail, such as coral fasteners and pretty knitwear.

You'll think you've stepped into an archaeological dig - however unlikely that is in Kensal Green. The owner, Dale Rogers has sourced incredible fossils from Madagascar, Morocco and even from the UK. He sells Moroccan lamps, ceramics, wooden sculptures, wrought iron candlesticks and large wooden framed mirrors. Buying an artefact here for your home will give it that exotic, well-travelled, adventure-story touch. Buddha heads are in abundance and so are ceremonial masks from East Timor. This is an incredible, tiny shop, which has about eight tons of fossils on sale. Find a gift here for a housewarming party, or an original birthday present. Call to arrange a visit outside shop hours.

Bond Street

Designer chic
Bond Street
London, London W5 5AA
United Kingdom
Named after Sir Thomas Bond, the financial controller of the Queen's Household at the court of King Charles I in the 17th century, the Bond Street area was swampy, uninhabited and near a plague pit - an unsavory area where highwaymen preyed on passers-by and noblemen fought duels. By the 1850s, however, Bond Street had undergone something of a renaissance and become a place lined with fashionable shops, where members of high society would stroll the streets. And it has remained so, although tourists and shop-a-holics are its main visitors now. Nonetheless, Bond Street still has many traders who display the Royal Warrant and maintain a tradition of individual service, with many leading fashion houses where made-to-measure garments can be purchased. For lovers of art, high fashion and elegant clothes, jewelery and leather goods, there is no equal to Bond Street. Acquisitions and changes have enhanced its reputation further over the years with key fashion houses - such as Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton - opening shops.

Greenwich Market is actually several markets in one, and if it wasn't for what remains of the Millenium Dome in the background you could probably completely forget you're in London. Anyway, those markets are: Bosun's Yard, Greenwich Church Street, an indoor craft market selling great foodstuff; The Flea Market, Thames Street, which is often missed as it's hidden away in a back street and sells every sort of bric-a-brac imaginable; Greenwich Antiques Market, Greenwich High Road, doesn't actually have many antiques, but does have lots of books, clothes, music & jewellery; the Central Market, Stockwell Street, the largest part of the market selling everything from kitsch for the home to Thai food, furniture & books; and The Craft Market, Greenwich Church Street. Come here for handmade clothes, rugs & pottery. Phew! What more could you want?

Fancy donning a wig and gown and bringing hardened criminals quivering to their knees in the face of British Justice? Or, alternatively, organising planning permission for Mrs Jones's Greenhouse. Yes? How about performing the groundbreaking keyhole surgery that'll give back little Timmy the use of his legs? Well, better hit those books then. Which will undoubtedly mean making your way down the austere settings of Lambs who claim to always have core course books in stock and, if you need a book that is not on the shelf, then they offer an express ordering service.

This massive airport is the world's busiest international airport, and is regarded as the hub of the aviation world; over 90 airlines have made Heathrow their base. Vast and sprawling, it can take some time to get between the different terminals so be sure to know exactly where you're going before you get there. There are cash machines, bureau de change facilities and post offices throughout. Valets, car rental stalls, taxis and buses all operate out of the many terminals. There's also a vast array of food outlets, ranging from burger bars and coffee houses to sandwich shops and sit-down restaurants.

Situated 48km northwest of central London, Stansted is the airport of choice for the surfeit of low-budget airlines that run to Europe, although it also serves destinations worldwide. This can mean the departure hall is overrun with customers queuing to check in, and it's always worth getting there with plenty of time to spare. With both arrivals and departures in one building, it's nothing like the size of Heathrow and Gatwick, although it still has a reasonable array of shops and eateries, especially since the completion of the departure lounge extension at the end of 2001. There is a dedicated pick up area in Zone D of the short-stay car park where customers can wait for free for 10 minutes. Stansted has short, medium and long-stay car parks. The short-stay parking is very close to the terminal building while the long-stay parking is a short bus ride away and the medium-stay parking is in the middle. The airport runs regular shuttle buses between the long-stay car parks and the terminal although travellers should add an extra 30 minutes to their journey to account for this. Pre-book on the website for parking discounts and details on the AirportsPLUS VIP service - a priority reserved car parking facility. The airport railway station and ticket office is below the terminal building. All trains have facilities for special needs passengers but note that you cannot take bikes on the Stansted Express, although they can be taken on the local train service into London. Trains run from 5a-11p every day. Buses run from the terminal forecourt and serve London and the rest of the country. For taxis, Stansted Airport Cars have a desk on the international arrivals concourse. Call +44 1279 662444 to prebook. Wheelchair accessible cars are available on request. There's a wide variety of snack bars and restaurants from coffee houses to seafood restaurants. Standsted has tried to ensure high standards by bringing Egon Ronay and his team of restaurant inspectors on board and it's worth looking out for the units that have Egon Ronay ratings. Restaurants and bars that belong to national chains have been price-fixed in line with high street prices so you should not pay a penny more than you would on the UK high street. There can be long queuing times for check-in and you need to allow time for getting to and from the long-stay car park. If you want your journey to go really smoothly, it's worth investigating the AirportsPLUS VIP service which includes fast track security clearance, entry to the VIP lounge, commission-free currency and special shopping and eating offers. Air 2000, Air Malta, Air Stord, Aurigny Air Services, British Airways, Cyprus Airways, Czech Airlines, El Al Israel Airlines, Intourtrans, KLM UK, KLM exel, KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines, Kibris Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair, Northwest Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair, bmi british midland are all the possile airlines served.

Medical Services

General Information
North Central London & North East London
London, London
United Kingdom
+44 0845 4647 (NHS)
The National Health Service (NHS) gives free treatment to those ordinarily resident (your stay is legal and has lasted longer than six months) in the UK. Standard charges are made for dental treatment and prescriptions. All citizens of the European Union plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein are entitled to free medical assistance and consultations in Britain. Like British citizens they must pay the £6 fee for any drug prescriptions. Some other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Eastern Europe and Russia have reciprocal health agreements with the UK. These vary from free entitlement to a proportion of the costs being waived. Only urgently needed treatment is covered. Visitors from most countries, including the USA, Canada, Switzerland, Mexico and all African, South American, Middle Eastern and Asian countries will be liable for full medical costs unless covered by insurance. This does not, however, apply to treatment at accident and emergency departments which is free for everyone. If your country of origin is not covered by such an agreement and your stay is for less than six months, then private medical insurance is advisable. Emergency treatment is given free to residents and to visitors alike. Please note that London Trusts in particular have much more rigorous checks on entitlement to treatment and that St Thomas' has an overseas visitor's team whose main role is to recoup the cost of treatment where appropriate. Also, even if you are an EU citizen, if your sickness whilst here is due to a pre-existing condition that was known to you when you traveled (e.g. pregnancy or diabetes) then you will have to pay for treatment no matter what.

This craft market is a fantastic place to pick up gifts, flowers, farmer's market fare and hand-crafted home accessories. Founded on a historical site, the mill that makes it famous is currently under threat, although the residents are battling to protect it. It's well worth a visit, as the stalls are comparable to any of the more "famous" markets while its location near the River Wandle makes it a great get-away only 20 minutes from Central London. With over two hundred stalls offering books, records, art, crafts, clothes, hats and more, and a range of food stalls, you can spend a day here getting the London hustle and bustle out of your system.

This market is named after the pub that used to be next door. Now, the market is on a new site in the same area and has a roof - believe me, when it starts raining, you'll wonder why other markets don't do the same. Flea markets are often in less than reputable areas, and this ones no different (watch out for the men selling dodgy cigarettes on every corner), so it's probably a good thing that it runs during the day. But the crowds of people all looking for bargains in clothes, household goods, toys, accessories and food all create a great buzz on the weekends.

Tourists love this place. It's not only a quaint little tea shop, it sells one of the world's most recognizable brands of tea and houses mementos recounting the history of the 300-year-old company in a small museum. Of course, you can buy Twinings in any supermarket, but tea-towel lovers, out-of-towners and lovers of all things cute will find this shop absolutely charming.

Walthamstow Market

Walk those streets
Hoe Street to St James's Street
Walthamstow
London, London E17
United Kingdom
http://www.lbwf.gov.uk/index/l...
With many of the city's more famous markets either being increasingly geared towards tourists (Portobello Road, Camden) or infested with ultra-chic urbanites (Spitalfields, Brick Lane), it's comforting to know that this East London market still manages to retain a sense of community spirit. The longest daily street market in Europe, it stretches from Hoe Street to St James's Street and offers some of the best bargains in town; whether you're looking for vintage clothes, fruit and veg, home appliances, fabrics or, er, dog food.

Wembley Sunday Market

When Sunday comes
Stadium Way
Wembley
London, Middlesex HA9
United Kingdom
Every Sunday, rain or shine, this market is crawling with people ready to browse through more than five hundred stalls. Clothes, appliances, tools, carpets, accessories and food - although not exactly quality stuff - provide a great bargain hunt. Because this is a major stadium, be ready to walk if you don't want to pay for parking in the car park.

A hidden gem
22 Poland Street
2nd Floor
London, London W1F 8QH
United Kingdom
+44 20 7287 6922
This exclusive boutique is the style-child and namesake of a young Antipodean with an excellent eye for fashion. Knowing exactly what her regular and loyal customers like, the result is a shop which caters for the more discerning and discriminate fashionista, presenting an understated, avant-garde approach to commercial clothing. Little-known labels from Australia intermingle with hip creations from Eley Kishimoto, Mint, Carol Christian Poell, Gaspard Yurkievich, Susan Ciancolo and TSE. Also in stock are fabulous accessories and shoes. Paying for what you get, i.e. quality and originality of design in a uniformly dictated high-street fashion world, garments start at around £100.
