The one and only |
4-5 Old Bond Street London, London W1S 4PD United Kingdom +44 20 7355 0088 http://www.alexandermcqueen.com/ |
A rather conventional part of town for the enfant terrible of the fashion world to base his own shop but, rest assured, that the anti-fashion fashion designer won't be tamed by the respectability of his current base. Full of eccentricity (bones in clothes) and contradiction (the seemingly down-to-earth East End taxi driver's son had liposuction), McQueen is a true fashion innovator known as much for his outlandish designs as his shock tactics on the runway - a man of such prodigious talent that he has already be named British Designer of the Year three times. Even given the dilution necessary to operate a commercial store, his designs are striking and severe with slinky jersey dresses in beige and lemon, molded patent leather pants and skinny dresses all being given his unique touch. Even if you don't intend buying (and very few of you will be able to - McQueen originals do not come cheap) the store is worth checking out for its amazing window displays alone, which, in the past, have featured models posing in simulated snowstorms. Comfortable shoes in a wide range of colors and materials are on display in this bright, white shop. Sandals, clogs and the like are best sellers. Birkenstock has become more and more fashionable and its designs have been copied by many high street chains, but this is the original brand. Its designers are also creating shoes that are increasingly in sync with the latest trends in the world of fashion, like the grey felt or fake pony skin clogs. Expect rather high prices. Cool Spanish leather shoes |
39 Floral Street Covent Garden London, London WC2E 9DG United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7379 8678 |
At this Covent Garden shop, the centerpiece - and only décor - is a big table where all the different shoes are on display. At the back of the space are strangely shaped metal stools for customers to sit on when they try on shoes. The majority of Spanish label Camper's shoes are made of leather in various colors, and they often have old-fashioned, classic styles. Prices are on the high side, but the shoes - trainers, boots, chunky-soled Mary Janes and the like - are beautifully made and are quite different to those offered by other shoe shops. Camper also repairs their own shoes; simply take them to any branch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Venerated French house |
26 Old Bond Street London, London W1S 4QD United Kingdom +44 20 7493 5040 http://www.chanel.com/ |
Words are not enough to describe this venerated French haute couture house. Young ladies come of age when they get their first Chanel woollen suit and quilted bag. But it is also a classic label that can happily be worn by three generations. For most women, the thought of wearing an authentic Chanel garment is a virtual fantasy. Models like Claudia and Naomi may get theirs for free, but you'll need to visit the boutique and be prepared to part with a lot of money. With shoes, perfumes, handbags, cosmetics and toiletries available, you can seriously be covered from head to toe in Chanel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Along with Manolo Blahnik (the king of them all), Jimmy Choo and Gina, Christian Louboutin instils an insatiable need for shoes in the pretty heads of It girls, fashion editors, ladies who lunch and other girls about town. This French designer is still relatively unknown outside fashion insiders and people who can afford his pricey and exquisite designs. Come feast your eyes and feet on the most beautiful stilettos, kitten heels, mules, flats and other ultra-feminine shoes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Find not only toys, games and clothes here, but also a carousel, hairdressing salon and a very well stocked book department - this is a department store for children which will undoubtedly capture the hearts of many parents too. Dorothy Perkins is a great high-street provider of feminine fashions. With a plentiful supply of must-have basics such as pretty, trimmed cardigans, fitted shirts, casual trousers and T-shirts, they also stock a wide selection of accessories including scarves, bags, jewellery and swimwear on the ground floor. The range changes according to the season, but shoes wander in at between £30-£100 a pair. Formalwear can be found upstairs in the shape of tailored suits and versatile mix-and-match items that are ideal for the office, and the brand also deals in exclusive designer collections by Whistles and Edina Ronay, incorporating all the prints and colours to create the latest key look. Consciously catering for every female form, you'll find stylish ranges for petite and larger sizes up to 20 as well as a maternity collection. Trendy up-to-the-minute styles are the order of day at Dune, be they for work or play. True to its name, the store is decorated in earthy beige hues, and you won't find any outrageous colours amongst the footwear either (which may or may not be a good thing depending on your taste). Kit yourself out in a fashionable pair of mules or kitten heels, or accessorise with one of the many handbags available. If it's 'in', you'll find it at Dune and the clientele, primarily 'It' girl types, reflects this. Good value fashionable footwear and accessories for trendy young folk on tight and not-so-tight budgets. Branches everywhere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ecco's vision has always worked on a combination of innovation, design and dynamics since the company was launched in the town of Bredebro, Denmark over 30 years ago. These days you're still likely to recognise an Ecco shoe by its perfect finish, fine stitching, quality leather, and soles that smile with comfort. Ecco's collections range from city slickers to casual, outdoors and golf shoes to urban chic styles and more dressy shapes, but they're all grounded in the principles of quality footwear that is kind to feet. Founded in 1914, in Hollywood, this venerable Italian label is famous for its silk ties and scarves and its stylish shoes but also offers an impressive selection of bags, accessories and perfumes. Quality and attention to detail are the order of the day, with hand-stitched, soft-leather shoes, beautiful embroidery, and sophisticated design featuring heavily. These hip and trendy little numbers are straight from America. Men's and women's shoes are very New York and very Soho - many are all style and no comfort! Collections are really eclectic and, depending on the season, expect to find gorgeous stilettos, snakeskin boots and sweet pastel flats for girls, and chunky loafers to summery sandals for men. Prices are inflated due to that "It" factor and are comparable to those of designer labels. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shoes & conservative wear |
84-88 Kings Road Chelsea London, London SW3 4TZ United Kingdom +44 20 7581 2914 http://www.hobbs.co.uk/index.p... |
Hobbs is modifying its image of dependable but boring shoes, suits and casual wear, with sleeker lines and original pieces. The transition has gone well on the whole - although the odd horrendously patterned dress does crop up, the clothing is generally well-cut, with good quality fabric. Suits and floaty dresses are staples, but silky sequined numbers are creeping in. The shoes that first made the shop's reputation are still good value for the high quality - you can always find seasonless boots, loafers and mid-to-high heels as well as seasonal choices. Jauko is an acronym for Japan, UK and Korea but when you enter the bright, plainly decorated shop, it's not immediately obvious why this is so. Most of the riotously colourful 1950s' inspired dresses and even brighter monochrome tops come from Italy. There are a few pieces, like the bags and the cute beaded slippers, that come from Korean and Japanese sources. And, of course, there are the Hello Kitty accessories and Japanese scarves. Jauko does stylish kitsch perfectly. Check out Pamela's dresses that feature postcard vistas of Italy in loud technicolour. Some of the more subdued dresses are perfect for evening engagements. This is the place to get your hands on the very same luggage that has accompanied Hollywood stars, British aristocrats and Victoria Beckham across the world - if you've got plenty of cash to spare, that is. With prices starting at just under £100 for key rings and going up to £20,000 for a trunk, you might be tempted to hold on to that battered, Columbo-style suitcase just a little longer. Affectionately known as Marks & Sparks, this is undoubtedly a British shopping institution. There can't be a single man, woman or child in the UK who doesn't own something from M&S, especially from their famous underwear selection. The appeal of the chain lies in its conservative approach combined with quality and value. While critics have pointed out that M&S has been slow to absorb new trends, they have responded by hiring younger and hipper designers like Julien Macdonald and Katharine Hamnett to create exclusive collections. The new Autograph section within selected stores is their answer to designer/boutique shopping. Quality and convenience foods are also a strong point. Branches nationwide and overseas. Shopping and sporting shrine to Nike |
236 Oxford Street London, London W1N 9DF United Kingdom +44 20 7612 0800 http://nikeid.nike.com/nikeid/... |
Niketown is less of a sporting store and more of a gallery. The multimedia experience that accompanies your trip to buy a pair of cross-trainers is what keeps the Nike empire going strong. Screens fold down to project memorable scenes of athletic excellence, and the roar of a stadium crowd is pumped into each room. Shoe boxes are sucked from the back room through a clear tube that winds through the multi-level store to the consumer. All Nike brand athletic gear, shoes and accessories are sold. Don't come for the film |
Notting Hill London, London United Kingdom http://portowebbo.com |
Notting Hill - is there anywhere else like it? Back in the old days it was a huge slum, inhabited by the poorest West Indian and Irish folk. But these days, film crews, tourists, rock stars and Madonna come to visit all the time. You can't really buy Notting Hill cool but you can try. There is a plethora of great designer clothes shops you know (Paul Smith and Joseph) and newer labels you will want to get to know better (Debonair and Preen). On Fridays and Saturdays, you could luck out and find the next hot new designer at one of Portobello Road Market's clothes stalls. The vintage clothes and shoes are fabulous too. The Portobello Green Arcade, which, unlike the market, is open all week and has some lovely fashion boutiques. Oh and don't forget to observe how the locals wear the stuff in their natural habitat that is the various bars, brunch and dinner places in the area. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bursting with classic clothing |
43A & 66 Fulham High Street Fulham London SW6 3LQ United Kingdom +44 20 7610 6558 |
Despite looking rather tatty, Old Hat has fended off competition from more trendy Fulham High Street stores, and is full to bursting with classic and vintage clothing. Stock is principally oriented towards men's clothing - including a range of country and vintage suits from classic English tailors, and other formal wear - but women can find the odd treasure. David Saxby, the current owner of this shop, has been featured as a consultant on the Antiques Roadshow, so you know you are in safe hands. Suits are priced at £50-£100. Review © 2007, Wcities |

London's Busiest Street |
Oxford Street London W1 United Kingdom +44 20 7462 0689 http://www.oxfordstreet.co.uk/ info@newwestend.com |
Visiting Oxford Street is essential on any trip to London. Towards the end of the 18th Century it was bought by the Earl of Oxford and soon after this, Oxford Street started to become popular for shopping. When Debenhams and Selfridges opened in 1909 the street became the place to go for good quality shops. It now has over 600 shops and there are over 200 bars, cafes and restaurants in close walking distance as well as many other places of interest. Many of the more popular stores consider their branch in Oxford Street to be the flagship store and the one where they have their special openings and promotions. - Caroline Collard Review © 2007, Wcities |

Casual luxury |
1 New Bond Street Mayfair London, London W1Y 9PE United Kingdom +44 207 535 4600 http://www.polo.com |
The London flagship store was inspired by the ocean-going liners of the 1920s and combines art deco architecture with the opulent decor of a gentlemen's club. The women's section, for instance, features a white marble fireplace, a drop beaded crystal chandelier and bleached mahogany walls - and offers a ship-style view of the men's floor below. As for the clothes, the American designer has triumphed in the casual-wear market over the past few years, with Ralph Lauren shirts having become the Sloane uniform of choice. Beyond the basics, there is also the more funky Polo Sport, the Purple label, a selection of Collection Classics and, in keeping with the shop's theme, the Cruise range. There's even a collection of interior furnishings, sure to add a touch of style to any home. Review © 2007, Wcities |

East End bargains |
Roman Road From St. Stephen's Road to Parnell Road London, London E3 United Kingdom +44 20 7377 8963 |
One of the largest and oldest East End markets, Roman Road is not exactly straight out of TV show 'Eastenders', but it's close. The usual suspects are available: fruit and vegetables, clothes, shoes, linen. The area around the market is green, and you can enjoy a bagel from Ridley Bagel Bakery at Victoria Park to get away from the crowds. This is a great place to sample the East End. This upmarket one-stop shoe-shop stocks a wide variety of designer labels with brands on offer as diverse as Donna Karan, Superga sneakers and their in-house label. With the very cheapest shoes on offer costing a tidy £70, you'll need to have your credit cards at the ready and to check your conscience in at the door - but for the quality (and brand names) offered, it's actually great value for money. Even more so if you visit during the sales, when the simple window displays and in-store chaos make this high-fashion W1 store look like an Essex discount chain, even if the reduced prices are the only similarity. Modern leather |

You'll find lots of black leather here, mostly in contemporary shapes, like square-tip chunky loafers, or the boot of the season; pumps and evening shoes are also available. The sale rack always seems to be full of 80s throwbacks. Stephane Kelian used to be a popular label, but its collections have been a bit haphazard lately, and more suited to the brassy blonde look. Swear's shoes have graced the feet of the Star Wars: Phantom Menace cast, so it's no surprise to find they specialise in far-out styles and trekkie designs. Think urban shoes with intergalactic antennae, chunky trainers with Velcro straps and side laces, red basketball boots with flame design. But Swear is more than a mere purveyor of crazy, futuristic footwear, it's a state of mind. There's Swear music (generally on the warped side of dance); Swear films (This is Spinal Tap, Coyote Ugly and China: The Panda Adventure being approved titles); and even an online community. For those who like to walk on the wild side. Review © 2007, Wcities |
