Synonymous with English style |
48 Jermyn Street London, London SW1Y 6DL United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7290 8600 http://www.dunhill.com/ |
Only a few years ago, Alfred Dunhill had become one of those brands in jeopardy of losing its English appeal. The upscale store epitomised English gentleman style, but it seemed the Japanese and Americans were the only ones wearing its clothes. That's all changed, however, since the line gave itself a modern overhaul (which, by the way, maintains the essence of the old classics). You'll find the selection of ties and cufflinks to be superb, and you won't be disappointed with the personal shopping option either. Visit the Alfred Dunhill Cigar Shop at 27 Jermyn Street for a wonderful selection of cigars and a peek at the largest walk-in humidor in London. You'll find David Linley designs there as well. Music of all kinds |
20 Putney High Street Putney London, London SW15 1SL United Kingdom +44 20 8789 0518 |
Located just across the River Thames from Putney Bridge tube station, Beggar's Banquet is a specialist music shop that sells CDs and vinyls, bags, T-shirts and music magazines which you can browse through while the heavy basslines pump out in the background. Music of all kinds is on offer here, and their stock can probably be best defined as "everything but chart music", as no one genre is particularly favoured over any others so it's a good place to go if you're fed up with the churned out chart fare. Staff are friendly so be sure to ask if you can't find what you're looking for. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This modern chain store is good for all types of fiction, little novelty books and cards. Larger stores, such as this one, have coffee shops, CDs and specialist books. The really great thing about Books Etc. though is that they don't mind you reading the books before you buy - in fact, they even put chairs around the store so you can sit and read, which is by far the most comfortable way to shop. A free gift-wrap service, mail order, postal delivery and export scheme are also available at one of the friendliest chains around. Branches everywhere, from the high street to airports. Boots has a pharmaceutical section where you can buy prescription and non-prescription drugs. If you need photo developing, a new film for your camera or even a new camera, Boots also has a good photographic centre. Stocking almost a quarter of a million books, music and video titles, plus one of the largest magazine selections in the UK, this American import has become a leading light in book and music retail. Despite the vast inventory, the uncluttered approach gives it a loftily light appeal, allowing you to leisurely browse through shelves stocked with "everything from African poetry to Zoroastrian theology" or seek help from the friendly and informed staff. Afterwards you can flake out in the second-floor cafe, leaf through your latest buy with a cappuccino, or muse through the floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of Oxford Street. At weekends, the store holds special events for children. Both Borders stores in London schedule in-store appearances and talks by authors, musicians and artists. Check with the store for individual programs. The new London branch can be found at 120 Charing Cross Road, just a 15 minute walk away, with a similarly impressive stock and another sublime Borders Cafe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A small but classy selection of stalls, bang opposite the tube station on the other side of the street to Brixton Market proper, this features contemporary arts and crafts by local artisans. There is also an excellent music stall stocked up with a wide range of styles and a good selection of roots reggae. London's Busiest Street |
Oxford Street London W1 United Kingdom +44 20 7462 0689 http://www.oxfordstreet.co.uk/ info@newwestend.com |
Visiting Oxford Street is essential on any trip to London. Towards the end of the 18th Century it was bought by the Earl of Oxford and soon after this, Oxford Street started to become popular for shopping. When Debenhams and Selfridges opened in 1909 the street became the place to go for good quality shops. It now has over 600 shops and there are over 200 bars, cafes and restaurants in close walking distance as well as many other places of interest. Many of the more popular stores consider their branch in Oxford Street to be the flagship store and the one where they have their special openings and promotions. - Caroline Collard Review © 2007, Wcities |

It's always a madhouse during Christmas. Don't forget artists' materials and paper on the top floor; even if you're not an artist, you can check out the cute art students and maybe pick up a sheet of two of the beautiful natural fiber handmade paper. Gazing in through the dusty windows dressed with old record sleeves and posters, you can really sense the history of this little London institution. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time...no hyped-up promotion, bright lights and flashing video screens here. Ray's is the definition of an independent jazz record store, with unfussy isles, wooden floors and an imposing old-style counter where you'll find friendly, unrushed service. It probably hasn't changed much since opening in 1982, except for the addition of the blues and folk basement. The sense of timelessness and tradition befitting the music sold does not however detract from the huge choice of CDs and vinyl, ranging from second-hand to the latest releases. What's more, there's always a feeling that a lost, rare recording is just waiting to be found in one of the racks. In reality though this would never happen, because Ray's staff are as knowledgeable as it gets, and a section named "Rare as hen's teeth" takes you right to these musical curios. Part of Richard Bransons Virgin empire, V Shop is the re-engineered version of Our Price. Rather than having rows of plain old CDs and tapes, V Store devotes most of its space to the latest Virgin mobile phones, which you can pick up and use before you buy. The store has a snazzy interior, but its a shame that the selection of music available to buy then and there is so small you can, however, order just about any title via small computer terminals in the shop. One advantage of V Shop is that it stays open a bit later than most stores, so its good for after-work browsing. Review © 2007, Wcities |
