Albert Memorial

Victorian gilt
Kensington Gardens
London, London SW7
United Kingdom
+44 1392 66 5858
http://www.exeter.gov.uk/index...
Queen Victoria's memorial to her cherished husband, Albert, has recently emerged from a 10-year restoration project with its mosaics and gilding fully restored to their former glory. Sir Gilbert Scott designed the folly in 1872, and Queen Victoria unveiled it in 1876. Prince Albert sits on his throne holding the catalogue of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Beneath him lie sculptures of the museums, colleges and institutions that he inspired, as well as marble statues of animals representing the different continents. Allegorical figures of Agriculture, Commerce, Manufacture and Engineering also adorn the memorial. The Albert Memorial is especially beautiful when shining in the glow of the evening sun or when lit up at night. You'll find it at the southernmost part of Hyde Park, along the stretch of road known as Kensington Gore, opposite the Royal Albert Hall.

Brompton Oratory

Majestic splendour
Brompton Road
London, London SW7 1EX
United Kingdom

http://www.bromptonoratory.com/
This Roman Catholic church is a jewel of 19th century Baroque architecture. Officially called the London Oratory of St Philip Neri, it is run by the Oratorian order, which was founded by St Philip Neri. The first Catholic church to be built in London after the Reformation devastation, Brompton Oratory was not allowed to externally resemble a traditional church and had to be set back from the road. That said, it is a splendid church for both visits and worship. The side chapels with marble statues are beautiful, as are the elaborate Lady Chapel and the wooden Pieta. Look heavenwards to the fabulous domed nave. The 11a Latin High Mass on Sundays is celebrated with a full professional choir. If you join in, remember that this is a place of worship. You'll want to dress modestly, observe a respectful silence and switch off your cell phone.

This is a useful starting point for visitors to the capital - alongside generic information booklets are an extensive range of guides to London sources and to day-trips outside London. The headquarters' practical location means visitors should make this one of their first stops. There are smaller branches scattered throughout the city as well.

Natural History Museum

One of London's most popular museums
Cromwell Road
South Kensington
London, London SW7 5BD
United Kingdom
+44 20 7942 5000
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/
Explore the natural history of the planet Earth from the prehistoric era to the present day at one of London's most visited museums. In 1881, the Natural History Museum moved to its present venue. Designed by Alfred Waterhouse, this building is now one of London's most beautiful and most recognized. These hallowed halls now house more than 300 years' worth of collections, with over 68 million specimens. Broadly divided into Life and Earth galleries, the museum provides much more than can be seen in a day, and your feet will get tired before your brain does. Let your kids run wild amongst dinosaur skeletons, erupting volcanoes and life size constructs of blue whales - it's unlikely they'll ever forget their first visit here. Admission free.

Home of the famous proms
Kensington Gore
London, London SW7 2AP
United Kingdom
+44 (0)20 7589 8212 (Box Office)
http://www.royalalberthall.com/
This magnificent Victorian elliptical hall is a memorial to Prince Albert. The Albert Hall is now the venue for a variety of events, including pop concerts, beauty contests, sporting events and most famous of all, the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts - simply known as The Proms - performed daily between July and September. The Last Night of the Proms is probably the single most famous event to take place in this elegant piece of Victoriana.

Science Museum

Hands-On Experience
Exhibition Road
South Kensington
London, London SW7 2DD
United Kingdom
+44 870 870 4868
http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/
With seven floors this science museum allows one to explore the history of technology and glimpse into the future. Starting at the Launchpad, where you learn the laws of science, you can move through a vast array of interactive galleries which demand audience participation. From medical history to nuclear physics, it's all covered. Challenging the perception amongst many children that science is boring, the multitude of things to press, touch, watch and think about make this museum a firm favourite with the kids. A popular attraction is the IMAX cinema showing 2D and 3D films for an additional cost. Please call before visiting, as event schedules are subject to change.
