Dick Turpin's local |
Spaniard's Road London, London NW3 7JJ +44 20 8731 6571 |
This charming and historic public house was originally built as a residence for the Spanish Ambassador to the court of King James I, hence the name. Dick Turpin, the Highway robber, is one of its former illustrious punters, and his famous pistol is on display. The Spaniards Inn is also steeped in literary history; Dylan Thomas was allegedly born here, and poets Byron and Keats have also downed a pint at the bar. The pubs snug, panelled rooms and open fires make it a welcome retreat, and the real ale is another crowd-pleaser. A stone's throw from Kenwood, it is an ever-popular conclusion to a weekend stroll on Hampstead Heath. The Inn's garden is well cared for and the aviary should interest children.
