Church That Remains |
Fore Street Barbican London, England EC2Y 8DA +44 020 7638 1997 http://www.stgilescripplegate.com/ |
St. Giles Cripplegate remains in the center of an area nearly decimated by the war: the Barbican. Legend has it that there has been a church in the same location as St. Giles for a thousand years. There is no record of the Saxon church, but in 1090 a Norman chuch was built by Alfune, and it was dedicated to St. Giles, the patron saint of beggars and cripples, in the Middle Ages. The church is raising money to build a labyrinth. St. Giles regularly hosts concerts, recording sessions, and broadcasts, including the BBC singers. Review © 2009, Wcities |
