Whitehall Westminster London SW1 |
The Cenotaph, in Whitehall, London, is probably the most famous cenotaph in the modern world. Originally erected in 1919 for the Allied Victory Parade, the monument is undecorated except for a carved wreath on two ends and the words "The Glorious Dead." Uniformed persons always salute the Cenotaph when passing it and every year, a national service is held at the Cenotaph at 11 a.m. on Remembrance Sunday, the closest Sunday to November 11th (Armistice Day).
