Founded in 1897 by a crusading Clergyman who believed that access to art would improve the lot of the working classes, this was one of the first galleries to emerge in London's culturally rich East End. The gallery has never held a permanent collection, preferring instead to showcase an ever changing array of exhibitions, from individual artists such as Hockney, Kahlo and Freud to group shows such as Visible and Live in Your Head. It has been acclaimed as the gallery that taught Britain to love modern art, but even if you don't know your Hirsts from your Emins, it's worth visiting just for the decor. The gallery is truly breathtaking, a luminous, cathedral like space which enhances everything displayed there.
