Tennis history and memorabilia |
Church Road All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club London SW19 5AW +44 20 8946 6131 http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/index.html |
This museum, located next to the famous Wimbledon tennis grounds, traces the origins of the modern tennis game over the last century or so. You can enjoy this museum even if you aren't a tennis lover, as it captures the spirit of an essential English tradition. Exhibits include displays on the social history of tennis, how modern equipment has been developed, interactive quizzes, and a vast collection of tennis paraphernalia. Several tennis stars have donated clothing and equipment for display. These include Anna Kournikova and Venus Williams, who has autographed one of the dresses she wore to win the women's tournament a couple of years ago. The display illustrating how fashions in tennis-wear have changed over the last century is particularly interesting (and amusing). The gift shop next door to the museum sells souvenir gifts, books and, for the real enthusiast, Wimbledon leisure wear. Admission: adults £5; concs £4.25; children (age 5-16) £3.50; children under 5 free. Review © 2009, Wcities |
